Button, Gannon, etc working for NBC?

I was just wondering...I know the figure skating broadcasts will be on NBC from now on, but will it be run by the same guys, like Peggy Fleming, Dick Button, Terry Gannon, etc?

I don't think so. I read on another board that the NBC commentators for SA and Nats will be the same set as Olys -- Hamilton, Bezic, Hammond, etc.

ESPN will be broadcasting worlds and the GP stuff so they will do those

Am I the only one who breathed a huge sigh of relief after learning Dick and Scott won't be together in the broadcast booth? Sure, Sandra Bezic and Tom Hammond can be just as annoying in their own way, but Dick and Scott just seemed to bring out the worst in each other during their 2006 Olympics commentary. Plus, neither one of them seemed able to keep their mouths shut for more than a second.

Hm

I think he is amazing, and I was scared we wouldn't be getting him at all this season.

If they were smart skaters, they would listen to every word he says and make changes accordingly.

Absolutely!!! The man knows the sport and they'd be well -advised to listen and learn. :agree:

As for me, he provides some much-needed humor along with a great deal of information about the personalities and the fine art of figure skating. Thanks, Uncle Dickie!

I happen to like Dick. Did not like Scott or Sandra as M C's. I have learned a lot from Dick.

Thank goodness we won't have to listen to Scott & Sandra the entire GP series. I would rather listen to Dick & Peggy any day (although my real preference is for minimum commentary).

why don't people like Sandra? That kind of seems to be the consensus...Is she kind of stuck up or something?

I cannot STAND Tom Hammond. With Terry Gannon, at least the guy bothered to learn about the sport (and they kept him in figure skating, rather than doing his sport, basketball). Tom Hammond makes comments that show he doesn't even have a sports background!

Ironically, though, the sport he would be best suited for (horse racing, he isn't a journalist; he got his degree in animal science) he no longer does, since his open heart surgery during the Breeder's Cup in 2002.

The one thing I admire him for is sticking to his "guns" and not "changing" his accent. Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, et al have modified their speech so that they sound almost accentless (we are taught this in public speaking), but Tom has stuck by his Kentucky drawl.

RE: Sandra Bezic -- some people (including some members of FSU and GS) believe had it not been for her outcry in 2002, there would've been no need for a double-gold, and for the scrapping of the 6.0 system.

But, none of these two are as bad as Mark Lund.

I love Terry Gannon! He's a phenomenal broadcaster and I was so surprised when I learned that he was a basketball player. and he has such a soothing voice and never says anything mean..As for Sandra, it makes sense I guess that she's Canadian then....and I can't believe how anti-Russian Scott Hamilton was even though he should have known better than that by then....I'm still so bitter about the double gold thing at salt lake. That was so ridiculous. If a clean performance carrys so much weight, perhaps Sergei Grinkov should return from the dead and surrender his Lilihammer gold medal to Artur Dmitriev!

Sandra and Scott are the result of athletes not having journalism training. While it might seem drier to some people if Scott and Sandra refrained from talking about whom they thought should have won, true journalism is less partial. They need to talk about the programs while they are being skated, instead of saying-- "how did that happen?! they won that program...blah blah blah"

Tom Hammond didn't get why Anissina and Peizerat utilized Dr. King's I Have A Dream speech in their free dance, and thought it was quite inappropriate (and spoke about it during the broadcast). It was a tribute Sept. 11. Of course, because NBC believed it was "inappropriate," they took out the section where Dr. King was speaking in the videos that NBC sold of the dance competition. Now, in my opinion, limiting the skaters' free speech and creativity--that's inappropriate.

no dick button for one grand prix.. it's a miracle. :P
Dick and Peggy have not been doing the GP regularly for a few seasons now. Fortunately, we'll probably get Paul Wylie and Suzie Wynn for the ESPN broadcasts. We'll just have to grit our teeth through Scott's shrieking and Sandra's monotone during Skate America.

I agree. I've learned a lot from listening to Dick Button. He does harp on certain things (i.e. turning out the foot during the classic layback), but he is usually correct in his criticism. I think he might not be as sharp during move by move commentary, but he's certainly on the mark when he has time to review.

I do like Scott's enthusiasm...it works for a big, suspenseful event such as the Olympics. It may not work as well at a smaller event like SA, though...we'll see.

I'm not the biggest fan of Dick...I was watching the Ladies short on Ice network and while Nancy talks a lot, I find her voice actually easier to listen to than some of these other "personalities" like Dick or Peggy.
