During the broadcast, Sandra Bezic showed that she know little about CoP. She spoke about skaters being penalized for underrotating jumps---in the Grade of Execution. Yes, the GOE is lowered, but the major hit is in the technical score, where the skater gets a downgrade to a lower level jump.
The result can be disastrous. Mira Leung's 2A was downgraded in the SP. The 2A is a required element, so instead of getting 3.5 points for a 2A, she got a 0.80 base value for the 1A plus a mandatory -.48 deduction, and only 0.32 points for that jump.
In the SP, Mai Asada got downgraded on the 3Z2T for a toe axel on the 2T. That made the combination 3Z1T, which took away a required element (a combination must be at minimum two double jumps). The 7.3 point base value of a 3A2T was downgraded to 6.4 points, and with the mandatory GOE deduction, she got just 3.8 points for the combination.
In the SP, Emily Hughes was downgraded on both the solo 3F and the 3Z in her combination. Instead of 5.5 points for the 3F, she got just 0.70 points, since a solo triple jump is a requirement in the SP. She got just 2.76 points for her downgraded 3Z2T. Those downgrades cost her 9.34 points and took her completely out of medal contention.
