Cohen's Comeback

Hey, if Moskvina & Mishin can go back to ice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpG7cuREQuk, at about 1 minute mark), and Linichuk & Karponosov (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jcqg3sgO7vc - about 40 seconds in, btw, they are actually good), and the legendary hockey player Anissin can ice dance with his daughter Marina (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jStLRbDhGvM - very fun), and Rodnina can do Kalinka with Dmitriev (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAi1JpOVX24, around 1:30)... Heck, Protopopovs are still a joy to watch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wto0IJmaLOU)... Oh, and here Alexander Gorshkov tangos with 4 ladies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ED5CZTxGGO0)... OK, so none of them came back to competition - but so what!

Thank you for posting. Very entertaining, loved Gorshkov's tango.

I don't think she has to qualify through Regionals and Sectionals because she is a current cycle Olympic medallist returning which has always provided a bye to Nationals. Was this bye reason eliminated?
No, this rule still exists. You're correct that Cohen, as a current Olympic medalist, is not required to compete at Regionals or Sectionals in order to qualify for 2010 U.S. Nationals.

Sasha's return

I really hope she can become competitive Sasha and Tara are my all time favorite skaters, She will make it so much more interesting for me. For some reason I just cannot warm up to the current group of skaters with the exception of Johnny Weir it's "oh well, just another skating competition".

There is only one thing more annoying and boring than another "Plushenko comes back"-thread: a "Cohen comes back"-thread.

LOL, or speculations about Kwan coming back...

I have big doubts about Cohen becoming competitive enough to be able to win a place in US Nationals. Unless of course if some top skaters will be suffering from growth spurts (sp?). I really love to watch Cohen´s skating, but after a brilliant short programme she has sooo often had problems with the freeskate. My impression has always been that she kind of wants to win too much, and because of that is unable to handle the matter correctly.

I'm now going to await the
"Jeff Buttle re-thinks retirement and begins Olympic Training" thread, and
"Emanuel Sandhu deserts his dancing dreams to compete in Vancouver, where he will also sing at the opening ceremonies" thread.

Didn't you hear...................Sandu is coming back. He partnered with Putnam and they are going to compete in dance...........

I will be at the Galen center show tonight and will let everybody know how she does. I hope she is serious about a comeback, and i hope she can do it!

Okay, I just read your review, and first of all, thank you for taking the time to do so. However, a 3-salcow and 3-toe loop is all Sasha has been landing for the last two years. In fact, those are the only two triple jumps that she's attempted and has so-so success with them. It's going to take more than those two jumps and mesmerizing the audience to get to the top of the podium. With her skating with SOI for another year, I have serious doubts that she will be competition ready by the time 2010 Nationals come around.

Of course, anything could happen and pigs could start flying.

Seriously, though, I think it's all fluff, but if it makes her fans feel good to think that she's coming back, all the power to them.

You have to remember that FANS go to ice skating shows. Fans don't make the decisions at US Nationals and the Olympics, judges do. Sorry, but a 3T, a 3S and a huge smile might make waves at an ISU international Novice event, but not at high level Championship events.

When is the last time Sasha has done a 3Z, 3F, 3L or even a 2A? These are the jumps she needs to land, some in combination, in a 4-minute FS program along with 3 spins, a spiral sequence and a footwork sequence.

I just read the announcement that Sasha will be headlining SOI in 2009, which will leave her virtually no time to train until after the SOI tour ends, in the spring. So she is going to have less than 9 months to work on getting back jumps she hasn't done in more than 3 years and get them consistent.

Knowing Sasha's less-than-enthusiastic approach to training, I just don't see her doing that successfully in that time frame.

You CANNOT, I repeat, you cannot take much away from what happened at a fluff show. Like I said in the other thread, they perform without the stress of being judged, and they're more at ease.

If some of Cohen's fans wish to hang on to that little branch that is cracking, however, I won't stop them.

according to Kurt Browning there's a different kind of pressure in show skating, but it's still there...

Mskater, thanks for pointing that out. I hadn't been aware of that bye provision. I was going to say I could not in a million years imagine her actually putting herself through Regionals, so the bye rule makes this whole comeback picture a little less absurd. Of course she'd still need to make sure she's got consistent triple lutz and flip combinations by the end of 2009 and not get injured in the meantime. I guess she's got 14 months to see if she can do it. It's not out of the question, but I certainly won't be holding my breath. . .

Does anyone know whether Sasha has been seen reworking how to do a lutz and a flip? Because in the old days, she had a wobbling edge going into both of them, ripe for edge calls these days on both flip and lutz..

And she's been known to have an inside edge on a landing, too.

If she's working on getting better edges both going into and after landing her jumps, then I'd believe she's serious about another run at the Olympics.

But in any case, I'm thrilled to here she's working on resuscitating some of her technical content. That will give her some more choreographic options for her show exhibitions. Go Sasha!

She won't have 14 months. She'll be headlining SOI from November through mid-April, with rehearsals starting this month. She'll probably take a short break after SOI, then start training in May. That gives her only 8 months to get in shape before Nationals.

IMO, the probability that Sasha could injure herself is much greater than the probability that she can get all her jumps back and execute them consistently in two new progams. Obviously, 'getting the jumps back' would not include re-engineering her lutz/flip technique to avoid edge deductions.

I have the perfect solution for all these comebacks. Instead of trying for the Olympics, they could go on one of those "Skating with the Stars" programs, where, as celebrities, they are paired with active skaters.

Sasha (actress), paired with Johnny Weir.

Kristi (professional dancer), paired with Evan Lysacek.

Michelle (international diplomat), paired with her old partner Matt Savoie

Matt would first have to reinstate, but then he could be reunited with his teammate from some of the old cheesefests where they competed in two-person "teams."

They would blow away celebrity-skater pairs teams like Justin Timberlake/Mirai Nagasu or Peyton Manning/Rachael Flatt.
