Condoleezza Rice to make announcement about Michelle Kwan on 11/9

Ah wonderful semantics.

I am from Boulder, but I was born in Denver is the way I would read it. My ex was born in Korea, but she is from California is the was she saw it. JAT

See, I'm with you Toni... If I remember correctly, Michelle has never really said what she wanted to do... only that she loved politics and was planning on studying poli sci & psychology at DU...

I thought it was studying poli sci and international relations at DU. I did a search on "metacrawler" on "public diplomacy ambassador" and there are people who have held that position who have gone on to full careers -- Undersecretary Karen Hughes, I think, was one.

Thanks for the links, NYMKfan. Don't you just want to stand up and salute?

I note that her official title is public diplomacy envoy, a somewhat more modest title than ambassador. Also, that this seems to be a title that they made up just for Michelle, since the USFS article says she is the first one.

"In her new role, Kwan will work with Hughes and Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs Dina Habib Powell, in their efforts to help promote cross-cultural dialogue with international youth and to increase understanding of America by sharing her story and life experiences.
This is quite interesting. Dina Habib Powell (age 31) was born in Egypt, moved to Texas as a young child and came up through Republican Party ranks, serving on the team of majority leader Dick Amrey for a time.

One of her jobs seems to be "increasing understanding of America" in Egypt and other middle eastern countries (she speaks Arabic OK but not fluently). If you look at transcripts of her speeches, this means extoling the virtues of George Bush and the Republican party.

This is potentially the most interesting Michelle story since she won Worlds in 2003.

Judging from the transcripts of the comments made about the announcement, I got the feeling that there will be other athletes appointed to the same or similar job:

I doubt that there will be too much extolling of Bush and the Republicans -- the idea is to foster good relations with youth in foreign countries. I think that MK will show, by example, that all Americans are not like Bush!

I wonder where/when Condi skated....

She went to DU too. I wonder if it was here? I mean in Denver.
According to these articles

Condoleeza Rice took some lessons at age three, but began skating in earnest at age 12 when her father, not allowed to enroll for graduate courses at the University of Alabama, began taking summer courses at the University of Denver. Condoleeza then entered U of D herself as a student at age fifteen, graduating at age 19.

She says that she skated seriously from ages 12 to 18, getting up at 4:00 AM for practice, and after that continued as a recreational skater as her busy schedule permitted.

“I believe I may have learnt more from my failed figure-skating career than I did from anything else,” she once said. “Athletics gives you a kind of toughness and discipline that nothing else really does. ”

I doubt that there will be too much extolling of Bush and the Republicans -- the idea is to foster good relations with youth in foreign countries.
I can’t wait to see what happens. When Michelle was hired by Disney, her job was to tell everyone how wonderful Mickey Mouse is (no Nancy Kerrigan, she!)

Not that I am drawing any comparisons with Mr. Bush, just saying…

I hope Michelle runs for elective office. I can just see her campaign ads, adapting to the spirit of the times:

“My opponent is a lying, clueless slimeball, and so’s his mama.

"I’m Michelle Kwan, and I approve this message.”

"Rice noted that Kwan is following in her footsteps: Rice attended the University of Denver, studied the same subjects and even skated competitively. 'She's on her way, I'm sure, to being Secretary of State one day,' Rice said.

"But when asked what she'd like to be doing in 20 years, Kwan demurred. 'It's hard to say. I take one thing at a time.'"

That's our girl! :)

I'm loving this.

OK, Michelle takes things one day at a time, but it is not too soon for us to start our bipartisan campaign. Let's plan our letter-writing deluge now.

"Dear (fill in Barack Obama or Hilary Clinton): If you get elected President next time, KEEP MICHELLE!"

I would guess that Michelle is non-salaried so that she can remain an "eligible skater."

Maureen

I don't think that's it. Plenty of skaters work to earn money for their skaters (remember the truck driver and the waitress - Marvel and Urbanski?).

There are several non-salaried positions that are part of government programs. I'm sure all her travel expenses are picked up as part of this appointment.
