Which of the relatively inconsistent and/or second tier male skaters here will break through and win a Grand Prix Event? That's the question. With Daisuke Takahashi's withdrawal, the field is wide open.

Tomas Verner, reigning European champion, would be the skater poised to win. However, Tomas has said in previous interviews that he does not like skating as the favorite to win. And Tomas is as likely to crash and burn as to excel in any given event.

Despite the absence of Daisuke & the inconsistency of Verner, there are several skaters here that are well worth watching. I love the quirky skating of Kristoffer Bernttson, who skated so well at Worlds in Gothenburg. The inconsistent Jeremy Abbott (kind of a male version of Alissa Czisny) is a favorite with many fans. Artem Borodulin can definitely surprise here. I liked his fluid programs at JR Worlds last year. Stephen Carriere is a very consistent skater, which is how he made first alternate for the GPF last year. He has been trying to upgrade the performance/artistry parts of his skating this year. And I hope he has succeeded. His jumps with interesting arm positions are a highlight of his routines.

So don't despair-it should be an entertaining, if not top drawer, men's field.

Doris, thank you for your previews! However, one small correction - Carriere didn't make the GPF last year. The field was Takahashi, Weir, Lysacek, Lambiel, Chan and Van der Perren.

There are so many 'almost favorites' without Dai that any one of them can actually win. And we haven't seen them at all except for a run throuh at one of those summer contests. Chippeur definitely the most musical; Borodulin the best line; Abbott with a prayer the high scoring content.

Should be a breakthrough for all of them.

You're right. Stephen was 1st alternate. (I've updated the preview to reflect that)

Have I seen Nakinawa before? He's going for the quad.

All the Americans are going for the quad.

Verner will attempt the quad in the LP.

Boroludin is not quadding. If this is a quad splatfest, Boroludin will win.

Should be an interesting contest. btw, I think Jeremy will be successful with his quad in one of the two parts.
