Dance - Free

OT: I live in Joanne McLeod territory. What I wouldn't give to see her male skaters who dominate the regional competitions turn up in something more simple. One of her promising young skaters has an absolutely ridiculous costume complete with antennae and the judges were concerned about sending him on international assignments!

Antennae?!! That is just embarrassing. And I thought what she had Kevin Reynolds in was bad. He looked like some kind of bizarre skating throwback at Canadians next to the other men.

Actually I think she is a natural brunette, like Navka was. And it's always better IMO to stay close to your natural hair colour as it goes better with the colour of skin. Both Domnina and Navka look much better brunette.

She looked pretty too as a blonde but somehow now she looks less diva, perhaps unfairly as i still remember Pasha. Dark hair makes her look more classic like a russian ballet dancer.

Frightening, the memories of Pasha's bleached hair. That was SO unflattering to her.

Well, I agree with everyone who's said B/A's program didn't really do all that much for them. I thought they had really improved speed and flow over the ice — actually in almost all of the technical areas I thought there was noticeable improvement. I thought the look of the program, though, was bland and we've seen it a million times before in ice dance. Choreographically, I preferred both D/W and V/M.

Shallower note: Hate Ben Agosto's mangey look. Get a hair cut and a shave! You look hideous.

I also must be in the minority and say I didn't really enjoy P/B. There were some clever moments in the program, for sure, but I found overall 4 1/2 minutes of circus really grated.

i dont know if someone has already notified people with this but:

first off V/M with the same music as D/S....(not saying who got it first)

and the FD costumes:

Is that photo of D/S from their free dance though? Even if it is, who cares? Both teams are extremely talented and have individual styles. They just so happened to have chosen the same music. Does it really matter who chose the music first? I have a hard time believing that either team deliberately chose the music, the outfit, choreography, etc. in order to resemble the other team.

I like V/M costume... though I find them a bit arrogant but their program is nice. I juts saw most of the FDs righ now, D/W should won the bronze medal, great performance  I can help myself, I glad for Tanith And Ben...Tosca is not a really good program compered to some other teams but their skated beatifully. I guess that now they are technically better than before, Tanith really feel the music (something she never did before)

I think now they are stronger and more prepared to build stronger, more difficult and well choreographed programs.

Congrats to all the teams that

I really hope V/M and D/W stick around for another Olympic cycle. I think they could have a really wonderful rivalry and both teams consistenly put in solid performances. They are so different but have amazing qualities. Without them last night, I think the dance event would have been rather lackluster.

ITA. I'd be sad if either of them retired so soon. I can easily see the two of them and Cappellini/Lannotte, dominating over the next few years. Beside DelSchoes and the Kerrs, those three are my favorite teams.

I'm curious, does anyone think Khokhlova/Novitski will retire after Vancouver? They're the same ages as DomShabs right? If they do I'll be interested to see who is the new Russia #1 (I would root for Gorshkova/Butikhov).

If both D/W and V/M do stick around, it will be interesting to see for how long they keep the same coach

I am one of those people who is puzzled by how D/S got away with the winner status and trying to understand the judges. One thing that I could tell with my non-expert eyes was the Dominina seemed a lot taller than any other girls in the field and the lifts really showed off her gorgeous leg lines. Then, I read a review on nbc.com that many of the lifts were performed on Shabalin's single blade which I couldn't tell from my inferior youtube viewing.

The power was undeniable, evident in every lift, spin and step they did in their "Spartacus" dance. But this wasn't simple brute strength, it was combined with a grace and balance that made their lifts like a piece of performance art. Many were done with him on one skate; that alone is incredibly difficult, but she was also unassisted, meaning she was working just as hard as he was.

So, while I was developing some respect for the seeming 'empty' programs of D/S, I read the following quote including Tracy Wilson's comment.
Tracy Wilson commented on the fact that Shabalin was doing a lot of 2 foot skating & I began to notice this then myself. ... I don't keep up with rule changes so am I correct in supposing that while it is not ok for single skaters it is ok for ice dancers? And if so, why aren't any of the other top teams availing themselves of the same easier method of propelling themselves across the ice as Domina & Shabalin?

I thought the two opposite observations showed how subjective it might be even to the experts and judges as well.

I am a big fan of Cappellini/Lannotte as well. What a field that would be with those three teams plus Samuelson/Bates and Crone Poirier! I love the young guns!

I just watched a short clip of the medal ceremony. Am I right and V/M didn't congratulate the other teams?
Sorry, they are good, but they are no saints and they were not the best at this competition. This behaviour just seems arrogant and inappropriate for such a young team.:disagree:

I wouldn't jump to conclusions so quickly. That clip, if it's the same one that I watched, was only 1:25. They could have congratulated them just after the clip ended. They could have already congratulated them before stepping out onto the ice and forgot to do so again just so people like you don't jump down their throats. Has any of their previous behaviour prompted you to immediately think the worst of them?

Of course I don't think the worst of them and that's why im shocked of such behaviour (if it really happened and it seems so - thanks for your report 1795). Thought they are a nice couple and friendly persons, but all these statements and interviews during the WC made them look a little bit too self-confident. Sorry, but that's just my personal impression, don't want to hurt anybody.

They said congratulations to D/S on the podium.

Heaven forbid anyone be a little self-confident! It just annoys me when people jump to conclusions about others with such little information.

Meryl and Charlie should have been on that podium with Tanith & Ben, and Tessa & Scott. That's all I've got to say.
