Does Dick Button read this site?

I like Uncle Dick also and have missed not seeing him this year.
Say what you may but IMO, he knows more about figure skating then most.
By the way how did he ever get the nick Uncle?

All I can say Joe, is if he is unable to control his nasty comments - like saying people are ugly or he doesn't know why so and so even bothers to skate, they should give it up - then someone should stop him. I am just one of many people I know who refuses to watch programs that he is commentating for - there is absolutely no need to insult young athletes who are trying their best, even if on that particular day they do not meet DICK's standards. I have been involved in this sport in one way or another for over 35 years so I do know what goes into it, how hard people work and try and they don't need some old has been insulting their efforts:disapp::disapp::disapp:

Well said.

i never heard dick have really nasty comments...especially personally nasty...so how did i miss all this stuff? do you have examples? i can name numerous times he's gushed over skaters not from the us...

I am Dick Button. Now you know. Carry on. ;)

Well that explains why you tried to hunt down Morosov at Skate America!!

While I miss Dick this season, I really enjoy Paul Wylie's commentary. And as always I like Peter Carruthers. Sometimes it's nice to hear someone else instead of the same person.

Dick Button frequenting a place like this would not "Put Him In Good Stead" with the other people in his industry.

If he does read this I have a request for him. Please be quiet when skaters are on the ice. Your commentary distracts me from their performance. Please talk only during the replay.

I've watched Russian (?) commentary that has been posted on YOUTUBE quite a lot these days. I would like to thank the individuals who posted them because they are very quiet during the performance and comment after the performance. I love that.

I also like Korean commentary. The ladies who are commenting during the performance have very quiet, soft voice.

I don't understand either language, but I like them both.

If you mean while Tarasova was not giving comment, yes it is quiet .

No, I was referring to videos with a man's commentary. But I am not sure if the language is Russian. Sorry if it's not. Anyways, my point was that there are some TV commentators who are silent or nearly silent during the performance, which I enjoy the most.

Getting back to the thread topic, Dick Button talks a lot. It's okay when he is positive. But if he turns to really negative, I don't feel like watching it again and again.

No, no, you're right. It's russian commentary with the guy. I really like it that he stays mum during the performance. He usually commentates alone, but occasionally TAT shows up and let's just say she's very chatty. ;)

I miss Uncle Dick this year if for no other reason to hear what he wants to focus on in the ladies skaters. I don't think it's my imagination that after tearing them apart for 3 or 4 years about truly deplorable laybacks, the quality started to improve for many of them. Similarly, I think we see somewhat better and less "crotchy" spirals (even if they all look alike) since he's been complaining about those.

I´ll join in this request, as I just cannot enjoy a skating programme fully because of his constant speaking. Of course he can identify various elements by really short comments like e.g. triple axel, great, etc. Yes, during the replay is the right time to make wider comments.

I guess this is not just about Uncle Dick, but some commentators that I don't know by name. I find it alright if they make a lot of comments, even though it is sort of annoying, if they relate to the actual skating. I remember that the commentator was talking about how Denise Biellman won a World Championship in that building during Sarah Meier's performance last year at Skate America. And why would we want to know what high school Kimmie is studying in when she is skating. Especially when the commentator talks about this and leaves out comments about the actual elements. That is just annoying.

And talking about annoying things in broadcasts, I remember they had these microphones in the ice or something and there are really loud scratches on the ice. Now that was annoying.

(Sorry for all the off-topicness.)

The problem is there is no round table discussion about a competition sometime after it is over. A panel of commentators such as Button, Kerrigan, Bezic, Wiley, and Tracy could sit around and hash out the various contests, including the showing of slomos of the skating.

I think that proposal would work well for the ardent fan but I don't think there is enough of them to warrant a special show.

Joe
