Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

I/Z were a much better team than anyone expected early on, so I agree they outgrew their own FD, and they needed to make it more complicated, or else, in my opinion, it would be even more difficult for them to skate to something that was so simple. But it never stopped being simple for them.
At the end of the season I even felt the SD was simple for them, but the pattern and the fact that they liked the choreography helped.

And if someone can help with the Waltz is Ilia. He was really good at waltz, without being too mushy, or too boring as many others.

Looking at this video, I have to finally agree with MK Blades. Though they did not have the most innovative FD, they had a decent vehicle, especially for a new pair. If left to work in peace, clean and worthy performances at worlds were almost guaranteed. There are people in Russia however who want to sabotage this pair for personal reasons which is unethical. Besti and TAT among others wanted to psychologically derail them. Add to this the rumours of I/K reuniting, it was all very tasteless.

I hope their team understands what is going on here and simply choose to be true to their vision. One thing is very clear, I/Z is a very talented, dangerous team. I pray they are given superlative programs this season that they perform very well. I just have to believe that decency and justice will prevail. But in the interim I am just loving the anticipation !

That's what I feel too, that's why sometimes I got tense when there was criticism. People tend to forget that this was a new pair, not newcomers in big competitions but a new pair. And being so good made people believe they are something like the sequel of IK at the level they were. But the truth is that I/Z were simply new.Better than I/K? For me yes, from the very beginning. No wonder that in less than a year the same attackers started treating them as a seasoned team.

I think that I/Z are this kind of team that wants to feel the program to skate it, they are artists as well as well as skaters and sorry but this is something that was missing in russian ice dancing, no offense to other teams. The last crop was either wannabe stars, or teams that would have been low at the top 10 even at Euros had they not been Russian. And I love russian ice dancing, I'm not saying all these cause I'm a crazy russian hater, but I'm glad I/Z appeared. They remind me of the old great teams.

Let's not exaggerate... i don't think someone sabotages I/Z. on contrary they seemed to get real support this year from their federation (as an ex, they got a spot for WTT) Rumours and gossips will always be about everyone not only about I/Z

They are supported by the Federation to a degree. They were sent to WTT as a result of being the Russian National Champions and the highest ranked dance pair at Worlds.

i don't know if this is the rule since they sent M/K at the previous WTT in 2013 (and they weren't Russian national champions, neither the highest rank dance pair at worlds)

I agree. And it would've been outrageous to send any other team, knowing that they didn't get the full financial support last season. They earned it.

I just watched the FD again and ... I'll really kind of miss it, though I also like the unchanged version best. I think you can really see how Ruslan has improved when watching the versions from Europeans and Worlds. They really draw me in, watching this program is kind of soothing. It's certainly not a program to win big competitions, but it's beautiful.

Rumours not withstanding I did not like the tactics of TAT and Besti, but who knows probably by the Russian definition of doing things they were supported well enough. However some things mentioned in the press by their own experts would never be uttered by the Americans, French or Canadians. But who knows maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, a wee bit. Or probably I'm just itching for the new season to begin. Where is patience when you need her :)

That season B/S declined, then I/Z declined, but I don't remember who was next in line, if it was the season M/K were infront of S/Z at Nationals

If I remember correctly…

In 2012/13 Bobrova & Soloviev should skate WTT, but later they had to withdraw because of an injury… So next on list were I&K.

But in that moment Lena already went on vacations and Morozov told she had back injury. Morozov also told that after 9th place at World Championships a participation at WTT would change nothing (so really not a team spirit)… Next on list were Riazanova & Tkachenko.

I read that Katya & Ilia were already in America preparing new programs with Sphilband…Next in row were Monko & Khaliavin.

Ksenia & Kirill were not injured, not at vacations and not in America with Sphilband…so they went to Japan….and finished suprisingly third showing two strong performances.

In 2014/15 it were I&Z who brought points for Team Russia in WTT (the best results from Grand Prix + the best result from World Champs were counted). The best ranked team after World Champs in ISU World Rankings were M&K.
I&Z got the spot like Russian number 1 who brought points for WTT, but instead of M&K like substitutes (in role of Russian team with highest ISU rankings)- S&B were substitutes.

I am reading Russian media for long time and I never saw something similar to this year‘s situation…

There were some harsh comments towards Bobrova & Soloviev in past. In 2010/11 Tarasova was sending Dima to a psychologist because his Twizzles were not good. In 2013/14 Tarasova criticised B&S that Russian number 1 can’t fall during programs. Those comments were not nice, but it was a 20% of what got I&Z this season.

I&K were never criticised so much by media, by Fed or by other experts. Yes, there were some harsh words by Bestemianova, but all others always excused the couple’s mistakes even in case that Lena fell / Nikita fell / Nikita lost Twizzles / the couple lost whole lift / they were executing low Levels in programs. They were always getting another and another chance saying that they have a unique talent.

Bad skate at NHK Trophy by S&K and low Levels at all 3 competitions were always excused and Tchernyshev and Sinitsin are even trying to make from S&K better team than the rest of the Russian couples.

This opening season I&Z already executed more clean programs than I&K executed almost for their whole senior career and I&Z became immediately Russian number 1 when I&K couldn’t get this position for their whole 4 years in seniors constantly loosing to Bobrova & Soloviev.
But comments towards I&Z were:
1) unfair – Bestemianova, Tarasova, off ice gossips by Margaglio and Scali at European Champs
2) too harsh and even unfair – Staviski (Ruslan is poor skater, the couple has the same heights and weights)
3) strange – Shechovtsova (judges like I&Z, but they need to work, while other Russian couples already have everything…I&K should re-unit), Gorshkov (we know that I&Z got medal, but other couples with Sinitsina & Katsalapov even after NHK Trophy are equal)
4) funny – Tchernyshev (he admits that he knows nothing about new judging system and Levels, but he says that S&K were the best at Russian Nats), Sinitsin (S&K are no worse than I&Z and even better at practise, while at competition Nikita is thinking about proving too much…)

Before top events there was always a rumour that I&Z split…which was putting another amount of pressure to the couple.

Nobody from Russian Fed or Minister of Sport tried to stop even one of this unfair comments which were NEVER done PUBLICLY to ANY other European / World Team Ice Dance member.

I don’t think that all members of Russian Fed are againts I&Z, it is not true. But too many people wants to get rid of the couple and make open war through media and in “behind the stage“ places and the only people who really have a power to stop this hunt (Russian Fed) are staying silent and waiting…so the couple must fight with it and protect themselves.

It should be Russian Fed who should push all teams to fight on the ice with their skating/dancing and not be shooting at their rivals in a hope that those ones will lost nerves and leave the sport forever – those are not a sport principles. As long as Russian Fed and at least some of coaching teams will not realise this, Russia will have a big disadvantage in fighting for big medals in future.

I fully agree. And to non-russians (like me) it seems so strange, that some of the russian "experts" are so plotting when they should be happy to have at least another promising couple after losing two of their top-couples.

I agree as well. Politicking, while done everywhere is extremely high in Russian dominated events like dance and pairs. I do t really see this in ladies or men. Even if you take away Tat, Besti, Sinitsin, Gorskov, you still have the skaters taking digs at I/Z, such as M/K (Russian Nats) S/B (Euros), and S/K in any interview they gave. I/Z have always taken the high road. They do their talking on the ice as it should be done.

That's a big part of the reason I really like them. Remember Lena is the fat lazy one and Ruslan is the little weak one. They exceeded the expectations of so many people. But going forward I want to see them so resolute, so untouched by these remarks. I am really hoping that this little team can really show an establishment, through an all seeing God, that willfully hurting another reaps no good rewards. I am just excited to see what will happen for them in the future. Maybe we're too close and can't see what a miracle it is that such a new team can skate the way they do. I don't think Najarro used the term "amazing talent" loosely when referring to I/Z. Forward !! Excited !!!

It is what it is. The best way I know to shut up rumors is get some good programs, skate great, no mistakes. That's it, and this is all up to I&Z and nobody else.

 I have faith they will have great programs.
