Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

Unless she has an ongoing sponsorship deal with Cartier, magazine photoshoots actually pay very little money. Models do it for their portfolio.[/url]

But Elena is not a model and doesn't need a portfolio. So why would she do a commercial ad if she got paid very little for it? Perhaps, when advetizers choose a well-known person, such as an athlete, instead of a professional model, they pay them for the name on top of whatever they pay for modeling work?

For the publicity or she likes it? Or she gets to keep the shirt she is wearing. When Agnieska Radwanska did the ESPN body issue, she didn"t get paid anything. In general, "Talent" don't really get paid to do these magazine appearances unless they are revealing something exclusive and in high demand (i.e. baby pics).

Given, that a lot of sponsors use measurements such as DBI or Q-score, where awareness is one of if not the biggest component of the score, it makes sense to try to stay in the public eye if you want sponsors. And if the rumors are true and all the skaters took a funding hit this year, it would make sense to try to get as many sponsors as possible by doing these things

And if this is for a particular magazine (Harper's Bazaar), it isn't an ad. Ads would rarely be done for a single magazine. It wouldn't make financial sense. Instead, this is a photoshoot where she is wearing Cartier. In fashion magazines, the shoots always feature brands which are loaned or given, with each and every product being listed somewhere on the copy. If a designer wants some exposure, it's cheaper to lend a magazine a necklace for a day or to give away handbags than it is to ask the ad agency to develop a concept, hire photographers and crew, and then pay the agency for the final ads.

and even though Elena isn't a professional model, she will be listed as one when they do the expenses for the shoot. I don't think Harper's Bazaar would have a cost code for figure skaters...

I also don't think they will pay much for her, as my friend is a professional photographer for top fashion magazine I have heard about the prices. But I don't think they pay nothing of course. If Lena did it, it means she is comfortable with it.

Well, let's see, creative expression, great pictures, clean, good PR. Getting your point of view across. Lena likes all these things, so it's a good fit for her. She could easily be a good PR consultant/coach if and when she decides to.

It's probably not a ton of money, but it's probably worth it. I hope that while she's making the PR rounds we get a new interview with Elena and Ruslan. The off-season is so long! I'd love to hear more about their programs.

Do you think there is a possibility for them to be in a show this summer, even in Moscow or somewhere else in Russia? I noticed that there are skaters who are using shows to present their new programs, or at least a layout, and get some feedback, probably.

I think the cast for most of the big shows still to come this summer in Japan have been announced (The Ice, Friends on Ice) & there's nothing in Europe until shows like Opera on Ice & Intimissi on Ice but those are in October & really too close to the start of the season.

They said last year that the Fed officials were monitoring them all the time, plus there are test skates in August/September, so they don't need to worry about finding opportunities for feedback.

deleted post. waste of time. :rolleye:
It didn't seem that anyone was trying to be offensive or suggesting that Lena shouldn't have done the photoshoot, anyway. People were just guessing how much she was paid for it (a discussion that you started with your post, by the way - not that I am blaming you for such an innocent comment). Spiral was the only one who asked why else would Lena do it if not for money, but Abraxis12345 answered her/him in a way that was quite positive about her possible reasons.

Sorry for responding to an already deleted post, but your eyeroll suggests that you still are of the opinion which you expressed in that post.

I guess Elena also simply likes wearing expensive jewellery and she also likes having nice pictures of herself wearing them. And she gets attention. Win - Win - Win, even if she doesn't get any money for the shoot. I also want to see those pictures!

Man, we really need this off season to be over. Am I wrong or is the wait even worse than last year? I mean, now we have seen how amazing Ruslena are and We.Want. More.

I know very well the attitude I was talking about. Why, when and who and it has nothing to do with what you just wrote. Let's leave it here Laura. It really is a waste of time. ;)

If the test skates in Sochi will be indeed open, maybe we will get videos. I guess it will be much better than the usual closed ones in Novogorsk.
Hope dies last!
