I have extremely sensitive skin, always have... and normally I can get away with blush, eye shadow, and mascara... as long as I don't wear it for more than a couple of hours...

But last night when I wore my pirate make up (ala Johnny Depp with the eyeliner and dark eye shadow) and now I'm all puffy in the eyes... I only wore the make up for a couple of hours, but it was more than I normally do... it was also a pain to get off...

is there anything I can do to combat this, or will I just have to suck it up come Halloween night?

Toni,

I can't give you any advice that will help you right now, but in the long run, you should check out Dr. Leslie Baumann's book The Skin Type Solution. In it, there is a questionnaire about your skin to complete after which you'll know which of the sixteen different skin types you are. There's a chapter for each skin type and what makeup/skin care ingredients to search for and which to avoid. She even lists specific brands that will work best. I have really sensitive skin too, and reading her book has helped me a lot. Here's a link to her website:

thanks! I'll check it out....

I haven't worn make up in two days now and my eyes are still burning... lol... but did I learn? nope... gonna do the same eye make up on Halloween lol

brand new stuff... got it just for the occassion... so maybe 2 weeks old...

How do you take your make up off ? Maybe from rubbing your eyes too much, the skin can get hurt or something may get inside your eye. I know that from my own experience.
If that problem with you eyes has been bothering you for long, why don't you try seeing a dermathologist or maybe one of those make up consultants you find at stores ?
hope it helps...

I'd be tempted to go to www.webmd.com and see if they have any info. Cetaphil is good for removing makeup from sensitive skin. Actually, I think you really need to see a dermatologist. I also have sensitive skin but your's sounds worse. I mostly use Clinique. I have no idea what your pirate make up is so there's no way to know anything about it. I mostly just wear makeup on Sundays and maybe a few other times. If I wear it a lot my skin will break out. I can use any lipstick all the time. Almay seems to be pretty good too and is probably cheaper. I'm not sure if it's still on the market but Physician's Formula worked ok too.

GrGranny - pirate make up is just basically black eyeliner, black mascara and a dark grey eyeshadow lol ... I'm *trying* to get the Johnny Depp Pirate look... I did pretty well considering I don't use make up much at all...

my doctor back in high school said that it would be a problem my whole life, and that there wasn't much I could do save for using make up sparingly if at all... I've experienced what I'm going through before - all through high school with drama club - which was the only time I wore make up in school lol

there are quite a few of the same chemicals in make up as there are in vocanic ash (though different consistencies) and that could be what it's all stemming from as I'm extremely allergic to that stuff...

I was just hoping for some secret remedy that no one is supposed to know about or something lol

my eyes are fine today :) I guess I'll go ahead and suffer through tomorrow ;)

Seems as if there should be something you could use that wouldn't be such a problem. Don't know if maybe there's some kind of chocolate that would work? ha Maybe there's some kind of makeup that African Americans use? Surely there would be some hypoallergenic.

You might want to try one of those all natural make-up stores. They usually don't use chemicals, and some things are even considered to be vegan products.

thing is if I don't cake it on I don't have as much a problem... the pirate eye make up is pretty thick once I'm done...

it looks so cool though lol

I'll have to look into it further... for future reference... :) thanks for the help :)

I have reactions to many brands of makeup, like avon and maybelline. I use only Physicans formula make up now. It took some trial and error to figure that out. I hope you can find some products you can wear.

Toni, I'm not a big make-up wearer either but I also don't have any problems when I do wear it, so I don't have a lot of advice....but there is something about using tea bags to combat swelling around the eyes...I guess you soak them first? Maybe you can find something about that on-line and maybe it'll help after you take the make-up off. Then there is the old cucumber slice thing, too. I've never tried either one.

cucumbers really mess with my skin (weird I know, not sure why it does) lol

I'm thinking it was teh cheap face cloths (the ones pre soaped lol) that I was using. I now have olay facial wipes (just add water! ;)) and I am having no reaction at all... :) so hopefully that was the reason.

Olay is one I absolutely cannot use. I only use hypoallergenic makeup. There also is Almay. I have used Physician's Formula and it is ok too. Estee Lauder makes the Clinique. I think there are other brands too. I used to use Allercreme but I don't know if it's still available.

With my contacts I am really hesitant to wear eye make up unless I'm told it's specifically safe for contacts and sensitive skin. I'm currently using Mica Bella. It's actual mica that's been tinted. I've also used Physicians Formula Mineral Wear and sometimes use Clinique. The first two seem really really gentle and I use Almay eye makeup remover pads to take it off. I never use the same thing on my eyes that I use on the rest of my face.

Hope this helps!

:)You can test your new cosmetics by testing on the arm for 4-6 hours.
Maybe it is not work for mascara. I always use Helena Rubinstein and one japanese brand called Dejavu, very popular in Japan.

Good luck on your make up!

Hey, you are not alone, I cannot wear any makeup at all, and me without makeup is plenty scary for Halloween.

I like the chocolate idea, but then you would probably have bugs all over your eyelids.
