Figure Skating in Australia

Great. Now the australian public will think that we imported him :(

Fortunately Belinda corrected them on her commentary for Brendan's free skate, which will either have worked or just confused the public more...

So is Kailani going for both again ?

She didn't last year. I have no idea which way the ISA will go this year regarding Jr Worlds/Worlds. My way of thinking is that while Kailani is eligible for Jr Worlds, she should go, and create more opportunities for our other Junior skaters; but whether they will give her Worlds as well or send Brooklee there I think will depend heavily on the outcome of Four Continents.

First SBS broadcast is over! It was so great reliving the great moments of Skate America, especially Brendan's PB. The only thing I didn't like was that the two-programs-then-change-divisions-thing was a bit of mood whiplash, but it can't be helped, I guess.

Personally, i wish they had 2 episodes a week- one for SP and one for FS or do 2 diciplines a show.

At this point, I'm not inclined to complain too much. I mean, figure skating on free to air telly outside of the Olympics is crazy awesome and hasn't happened in years.

Two episodes a week would be even better. Let's hope the broadcasts find a niche following. The GP Final is split, so that will be more encompassing.

I thought she wanted to do both last year as I remember her coach writing very nasty fb posts about maths professors etc as she got highest scores at nationals. I know they did not send her but was pretty sure she wanted both. My feeling is she is the best for Senior but no juniors as yet have scores at ISU comps just at nationals. Sadly Brooklee was not the best at nationals by a long shot. Kailani is def the best Senior in Oz at present

Is it usual practise for countries to send the same skater to both junior and senior worlds ? I know they did select Brendan for both but he pulled out of juniors and there was no one to replace him.

It does happen with the smaller countries who often don't have more than one or two people with the minimums. In the Brendan example, I think he has been our only man with the Senior Worlds minimum for quite a while and at the time, was the only on with the Junior minimum too (I think). We are a very fortunate country to have two extremely talented ladies with the Worlds minimums, so we have the luxury of splitting the assignments, if the ISA chooses to do so.

For example, Denis Ten did both Junior and Senior Worlds I think for around four years. Even after he went to the Olympics!

Today's coverage of 2015 Skate Canada features:

Yuzuru Hanyu
Ashley Wagner
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva
Yuka Nagai
Meagan Duhamel & Eric Radford
Evgenia Tarasova & Vladimir Morozov
Kaitlyn Weaver & Andrew Poje
Maia Shibutani & Alex Shibutani

I'm watching now!

A mix of commentators today, I always enjoy how Belinda Noonan explains everything because the average Aussie might not know anything about the sport.

I wonder if SBS is keeping track of viewer numbers? If so, they better be good so they can keep this up next season! :hap10:

I think that was why i thought Belinda Noonan was such a good commentator for Sochi with Chris Howarth.
Chris gave the excitement and Belinda gave all the detail. Belinda is especially good at explaining pairs skating.

I think SBS is investing in this because of skating's popularity in Asia at the moment.

Agreed! I loved her Dance commentary especially, considering Dance is a little bit of a thing that might mystify a lot of Aussies (no jumps, not really many spins). The only moment she missed was Hanyu's SP Zayak but I think most people missed it at the time. She was generally brilliant!

(I missed it at the time - was playing dodgems in the shops WHY DID I GO OUT TODAY and watching cricket...too much sport today!) Catching up now.

Would anyone happen to know the name of the woman who commentated formthe free programs, because Belinda didnt do it.
She did a good job identifying each element for us, yet, i would of loved a bit more insight or her opinion and thoughts.

My guess is that it was probably Tanith Belbin. She does commentary for Ice Network from time to time.

Just wondering how Belinda Noonan is so involved with skating and seems to have a lot of power with selection into oWI with certain skaters. Is she an ex coach/skater or more a media person?

Interesting you bring that up! Belinda Noonan also commentates on gymnastics here so I always thought she was a media person, but I looked her up and it turns out she was a figure skater and a coach - her maiden name was Coulthard (there's an interview with her on page 27 in this magazine).
