Figure Skating in Australia

Kailani was good, everyone else was so-so. Senior dance champs were alright, pairs was depressing without Harley and Katia.

Did you watch them at the jgpf though - they were fantastic. They've really grown this season.

Brendan's short was abysmal and it was really painful to watch, but he did so, so much better in his free skate. Which I really enjoyed watching that program.

So what did everyone think of the skating at Nationals?

Based on the live stream coverage I was able to see, I really enjoyed:

The senior dance winners, Chantelle Kerry & Andrew Dodds.
Kailani Craine's short and free programs in the senior ladies' event.
Andrew Dodds, Mark Webster, Charlton Doherty and Jordan Dodds in the senior men's event.
Amelia Jackson and Jordan Lazarus in the junior ladies' event
Rose Robinson's short program in the junior ladies' event
Brendan Kerry's comeback in the senior men's free skate.
Harrison Bain's jaw - dropping spins in the junior men's event

All of the skaters really gave it their best this week, and there are a lot of skaters with future potential, too.

I thought there was lots of great skating all round, but the winner had to be the men's event. Brendan left the door ajar in the short program and Andrew, Mark, James and Jordan just barged their way through it. I was impressed with the way Brendan rallied after his less-than-stellar start to the FS. No question for me that Andrew Dodds had the best FS though. Mark was really on as well.

Also, I remain impressed with Chantelle and Andrew as a dance team and I swear they get better every time I see them. Looking forward to their progression over the next couple of years.

EDIT: Almost forgot! Charlton Doherty was brilliant! I hadn't seen him skate in ages and he has been working seriously hard, my jaw was on the floor! He was spectacular!

Amelia Jackson currently in Istanbul. After short program she is in 3rd out of 6 skaters, but did not attain 4CC minimum score😩 All her jumps either downgrade or under-rotation. All level 4 spins. Scored 40.94 with 18.40 TES. Good luck in the free skate

Amelia won the free skate. Good for her. Still ended up 3rd cause of the short program. She did play it a little safe not going for triples, but I guess it payed off. Only 2 mistakes in the program which is good. She did attain the 4CC score for the long but not the short. Wonder if there is another competition for her to do ?

Unfortunately, 4CC is slightly earlier than usual this year because of the Olympics, and the cutoff date for acquiring TES is 1 January.

I'm a bit confused now. Who is on the Olympic team?

And did I understand that Brendan was beaten at Nationals? If so, I definitely didn't see that coming.

Surely he'll still go? Right?

Did...you even look at the results?

The Olympic team was named over a month ago. It's Brendan, Kailani, Katia and Harley.

Brendan did not get beaten at Nationals overall. He had a poor short that had him fifth after that segment but rallied well in the FS to finish around seven points ahead of Andrew.

Amelia getting TES is being discussed because we were hoping she would get to go to Four Continents as our third lady. Sadly, this won't happen this year (I hope it will next year though!).

No, I didn't see a link to results - I was trying to decipher from the posts, and that led to my confusion.

I missed the Olympic Team announcement, and I'm glad to see that Brendan is on the team. I'm also interested in your young pair.

Thanks for clearing up.

Four Continents List is out

We have 3 men, 2 ladies, 1 pair, and 2 dance teams.

Brendan, Andrew, and Mark
Brooklee and Kailani
Katia/Harley
Andrew/Chantelle, Matilda/William

-Finger crossed Amelia will work hard to be there next season.
-Where is Kim and Tim? Hope they are alright.

At Canadian Nationals, I stayed at TRIUMF house, which is named after the TRIUMF particle accelerator and is a home-away-from-home for visiting nuclear physicists doing experiments at the accelerator. It's also right across the street from the arena and is open to the general public, with reservations.

I met a man from Melbourne on the elevator. Later, in the shared kitchen/dining room, he made the mistake of saying, "We don't have much figure skating in Australia". All the Canadian figure skating fans were quick to set him straight about how you have a man, and a woman, and a pair going to the Olympics. He'll probably be telling his fellow scientists about his strange encounter with Canadian figure skating fans!

You're doing the good work, NanaPat!

I am still wondering whether Russia gets to compete in the team event. If they don't, since Spain can't go, Australia is first alternate last I heard.

I haven't heard anything to say that they can't or won't; at any rate I hope we find out soon, because our dance team would need to be ready.

They should still be in training, for 4CC. Though the Olympic timing is different, it's better than no training at all.

Well of course, but at this stage, unless Chantelle and Andrew meet the Worlds TES minimums at 4CC, it's likely to be the end of the season for them after 4CC. So hopefully it's all finalised either before 4CC or just after.

Do they have TES for Olympics? Or doesn't it matter for the "team extras" (or whatever they're really called).

A bit of a disaster for Craine at this event.

I hope she is able to regroup in time for PyeongChang, and work on fixing those under-rotations.
