Figure Skating in Australia

HAN scored higher the Craine at last years 4CC too - I wonder why they selected Craine so early for the Olympics given that she went to Worlds as well and only one could go to Nebelhorn. Seems a bit unfair that they never got to skate off for the spot and they are both very close !

My guess is that Craine had stronger international results with medals at The Asian Open, Slovenia Open, and a significant win at the Olympic qualifier, The Nebelhorn Trophy.

Hopefully, Kailani can skate a clean short program like she did at the national championships, and make the top 24 in PyeongChang.

I hope Brendan regroups as well, and peaks in time for the games. It would be a shame if he didn't qualify for the free skate, and had a repeat of his experience in Sochi.

Did anyone else hear the Canadian male commentator’s introduction of Brooklee at 4CC’s?
“She was BORN in the United States, she TRAINS in the United States, but she skates, of course, for Australia...”
The catty-factor was off the charts there!
99% sure this was the same dude who spent all GP series sneering at Zagitova (if not, it’s someone who is taking *veiled jab* commentary classes from him). Is it not time for this bloke to be fired already?
Unless his contract is up come end of season and he’s going for broke.
Anyway, was pretty poor form. Felt bad for Brooklee!

I Wonder why Kailani changed her LP dress? I know she designs her own so I can’t imagine she’d have disliked the original.

I wondered why Ryan Bradley said that about Han, too? If you can skate well, and you have the commitment, I am all for it.

It isn't as though the skating world is made up of athletes who represent other countries.

Her dad is Australian, and so what if she trains in the US. Most of Australia's elite skaters do, too, where they can get the ice time they need.

I preferred Craine's original dress. It was so much more cutting edge. Oh well.

So did I, but this one is essentially the old one just with black mesh added, right? I wonder if she adapted for comfort reasons?

How much feedback do our skaters get re costuming? I noticed on one YouTube video a comment about how her coach used to tell her to really use her hands and that she does use them well now, maybe this design change was made to really show them off? She does use them quite prominently and they did certainly stand out more.
That’s my only guess.

Ohhh, so that’s his name! Thank you!
Yeah the tone was completely uncalled for.
Especially when you contrast to Kailani’s super respectful (and rightfully so) into as the reigning national champ and 18 Olympian and of course the rest of the field who were all introduced nicely, and minus the dose of condescension.
It sounded to me not as much that he took issue with athletes representing countries they don’t reside or domecile in, but more as if he were making fun of Brooklee for having had a lifetime in the US, coaching in the US, and yet only the ability to skate for lil old Australia. I would love to think I’m reading way too much into it but, after the Zagi comments, I find it hard to give him the benefit of the doubt.

If it was Ryan Bradley, he's American, not Canadian btw.

And Ryan Bradley did not give commentary for Four Continents, so I think we have a case of mistaken identity.
Ryan was on site as Angela Wang's coach.

For U.S. coverage, Four Continents was called by Chris Vosters (brand new to the sport, AFAIK) and Charlie White. Neither of whom was involved in calling the ladies for GPs, AFAIK.
And I find it hard to believe that the affable Charlie White would sneer at anyone.

Meanwhile, as a hypothetical scenario:
For coverage for a U.S. audience, it would not be inappropriate to mention as a positive point of interest that an athlete (who represents a different country) lives and trains in the U.S. With the positive subtext of: "American viewers, you can feel something in common with Athlete X, even though s/he represents a different country." I enjoy skaters from lotsa different countries anyway, but that type of mention might increase my attention by a notch.

It wasn’t the wording, it was the tone of voice. I totally get what you’re saying, I too personally like it when announcers give us interesting tidbits of skater’s lives.
This one really just sounded very snarky is all. And I’m not Brooklee’s most ardent fan or anything, nor indeed a supporter of some of the - (in my humble and completely irrelevant opinion) - more tenuous citizenship links used across all sports (again, only my opinion, nothing more). So yeah, if I found it off colour, then I imagine it would’ve made a lot of people get their backs up.

I have no idea of who the callers were. I’m sorry for not being able to provide more info. I probably can’t put stock in the YouTube emblems either as different accounts alter some things when uploading to get around copyright. All I know is the voice sounded, to my ears, to be the widely derided “Canadian Guy” who was brutal all GP series.

I am with you on Charlie White, I can’t imagine him being rude! Especially since YouTube commenters always reference the rude caller as the “non-Charlie White guy” lol.

Do we know who is commentating for 7’s coverage? Liz & Simon?

If the guy you're thinking of works with Charlie, then it's not a Canadian guy. They haven't had any Canadian men on IceNetwork, NBC or the Olympic Channel this year as far as I know.

I found the comment in this video from the Olympic Channel, which would make the guy Chris Vosters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SsrZ0S-KGs

ETA: and personally, I don't find the comment particularly bothersome or his tone particularly snarky.

The "infamous Canadian guy" is David Pelletier, and he has a very pronounced French accent. That was definitely not him in the video. David does not do commentary for every competition, but does a few each year. He's very opinionated, and I think I'd get tired of him if he commented all the time, but he is also very knowledgable and offers insights that other commentators don't. for instance, do you know which partner calls out the rotations on the pairs spin, and why? If you listened to David, you'd know.

(Answer: it's the weaker spinner of the two who does the calls. The partner who is a stronger spinner is then adjusts to keep in sync. Sometimes it's the male partner, sometimes the female who does the calling, depending on the pair.)

Any thoughts on how Team Australia will do in PyeongChang?

Hopefully the draw will favour our athletes, and that they qualify for their respective finals.

I expect Brendan to be top 18
Kailani- top 20
Katia/Harley- 15th would be good.

Also, Chantelle and Andrew got the SD minimum TES for worlds. Now the Free Dance to go.

Chantelle and Andrew were really close to the FD minimum at 4CC. I reckon they can get it here! And then I'm pretty sure this would be the very first time since the TES minimums came in that we'll have a full Worlds team!

Pleased to see Amelia scoring over the 100 mark in Poland too! Looks like a bit of a mixed bag skate but glad she kept fighting through it!

Chantelle and Andrew just got the FD minimums (smashed through it by 8 points!)!

When was the last time Australia sent a man, lady, pair, and dance couple to a world championship together.

The correct answer is 2006 worlds in Calgary, Canada with
Sean Carlow (32nd/40)
Miriam Manzano (31st/43)
Emma Brien/Stuart Beckingham (20th/20)
Natalie Buck/Trent Nelson-Bond (28th/29)

That was twelve years ago.

Amelia seems to have gone straight from Iceland where she won gold in junior to Poland which seemed a very tight turnaround. She was also down for Bavaria but withdrew .

Nice to see Katie Pasfield also picked up a silver in senior at RIG.
