First Skates Advice for Adult Beginner

I'm a beginner adult skater looking to get my first skates. Unfortunately there are no professional fitters around my area (Indonesia). Most of the dealers in my area only sells Edea/Jackson on a pre-order basis (afaik). Therefore, it is almost impossible for me to physically try them on.

I would appreciate it if you can recommend a boot and blade that will last for a while + possibly a nearby professional fitter that I can reach out.

Here are my stats:
Age: 26
Weight: 55 cm
Height: 157 cm
Foot arch: normal to high arch
Foot length: 22.4 cm
Foot width: 8 cm
Foot (ball) circumference: 20.5 cm
Foot shape: greek/african
Skating Skill: ISI Alpha

Thank you

:wave2:Welcome! Do you mean those are the only brands available for you, or that the shop carries Edeas and Jacksons but will get other brands in for you? The fitter will measure your foot all around, up to the ankle, but it seems from the base measurements you gave that you have fairly narrow feet. Jacksons would be out for you. I can't say about Edeas, having never worn them myself. I wore Jackson boots for many years, but then they changed the shape and made them too wide in the forefoot for me, so I switched to the narrower Risport in their RF line. I can also wear Graf and Riedell boots in some models, but I think those brands would be more difficult for your shop to order than Risports.

As an adult, you need a stronger boot than a child beginner, but you're fairly small so you don't need the strongest model. Something in a 45 or 50 stiffness would do. I have Egyptian feet with high arches, and as a more advanced skater the RF1 is the model for me. I'm not a coach, so I hesitate to recommend a model for your shaped foot (although the boot could be moulded to fit your forefoot; it's the heel that has to fit snugly from the start and can't be moulded). @Ic3Rabbit , would the Risport Electra be suitable for this beginner in Indonesia with supply problems? Or would one of the Edea models work for her? Thanks!

At 121 lbs no. They would need RF3 Pro. And Edea will not work for foot type.

Pre order with foot measurements at your dealer if it the only option but it would be an idea to have them heat molded if possible for a secure fitting a option is Edea boots such as Tempo, Wave,Motivo and Overture the blades consideration with Edea Balance or Rotation blades,Charme or MK Galaxy.

:thank: That's what I thought, but the Electra is not a model I'm familiar with. I was going to recommend the RF3 Pro, but thought I should check with the resident boot/blade expert (you) first :).

I should make up a chart for my own reference showing what brands work for what foot type. Particularly for Edea, since it's a brand that seems to be ubiquitous but I've never worn them myself.

I have to disagree with this. The boots listed other than possibly Overture are not stiff enough for the OP. Also, Edea will not work for their foot type. The blades listed are also not great.

Hi everyone, thank you so much for the reply.

To answer your question, the short answer, Edeas and Jacksons are the only brands available.

Note: Well, technically one of the dealers does sell Risport, but only the entry level skates (Risport Antares).

At 121 lbs no. They would need RF3 Pro. And Edea will not work for foot type.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of foot type do you think suits the Edea boot?

It's not what I think, it's what I know as a pro who has skated for a very long time competitively and has tested all boots/blades out there and ones that don't even exist anymore.

Edea is a very skinny foot.

I noticed that the RF 3 Pro comes separate from the blade.

Which blade do you recommend to come along with the boot?

Either the regular MK Pro or Coronation Ace blades will serve you well from the beginning and for years to come as your skills advance. There's no advantage to their Lite or Revolution versions at the beginner stage.

Edit: I'm assuming you mean what blade would we recommend you buy separately, to have your skate shop then attach to the boot if you decide to buy the RF3? If, on the other hand, you meant ordering a sort of custom set with blades already attached to the RF3s at the factory, then I don't think that can be done. Risport does make a couple of very basic blades that could be used by recreational skaters who are seldom on the ice, but they're not recommended for real figure skating.

The way you stated it, it sounded like you wanted one that was already attached to the boot, so I said none.
