It started out as a splatfest, with both the Hubbels and M&T crashing after several other skaters before them already had. Then Samuelson and Bates skated lights out, got a standing ovation, and broke 180 with their overall scores. Groshkova and Butikov and Crone and Poirier also skated very well, and held on to their respective positions, C&P finishing less than four points behind S&B.
The top eight:

1 Emily SAMUELSON / Evan BATES
USA
181.66 1 1 1
2 Vanessa CRONE / Paul POIRIER
CAN
178.09 3 2 2
3 Kristina GORSHKOVA / Vitali BUTIKOV
RUS
172.85 4 3 3
4 Maria MONKO / Ilia TKACHENKO
RUS
166.01 2 4 4
5 Madison HUBBELL / Keiffer HUBBELL
USA
157.47 5 5 5
6 Ekaterina RIAZANOVA / Jonathan GUERREIRO
RUS
153.29 7 6 6
7 Alisa AGAFONOVA / Dmitri DUN
UKR
150.57 8 7 7
8 Kharis RALPH / Asher HILL
CAN
144.29 10 9 9

Samuelson/Bates were in a class of their own.. I think G/B were better in the FD but I dont know if it would have been enough for them to take silver. Monko/Tkachenkoo screwed it big time and the Hubbels were boring. Riazanova/Guerreiro and Ralph/Hill were underscored IMO. Overall I miss the voids from the senior competitions but it was ok.

I did NOT think the Hubbells were boring, I thought they were breathtaking until she had that slight fall. Because of injury, they missed competing in the JGP and they were way behind with practice time. For them to finish top 5 was more than I expected. Kudos to them.

Excerpted from icenetwork:

Brother and sister duo Madison and Keiffer Hubbell placed fifth in each component, including the free dance. The pair scored an L 4 on six of their seven elements. But they finished a straight-line lift early, causing the judges to rate it an L 2. Unfortunately, just as in the original dance, Madison also fell on a linking step, causing the pair to lose points.

hmmm. Wait till next year. btw: do they actually time the holds on a lift or is it by eyesight and feeling?

The Hubbells couldn't have sneaked into the medals anyway, even if Madison hadn't fallen and the lift wasn't ended early. Their PCS scores just wouldn't have held up against the two Russian teams.

But their FD was terrific, a huge improvement from Nationals.

Wait til next year. They'll be back.

If this is a specific question about the Hubbells, I'm not sure. If it's a question in general, I know B&A time holds, and I'm pretty sure V&M do as well.

It's more about the timing judgement: how is it timed and by whom?

Joe

I believe one of the skaters will count it out. For example, Tanith does the counting in at least one of B&A's lifts in this year's free. I think it's the Skate America K&C where you can hear Ben say that he can hear Tanith counting "one one-thousand, two one-thousand" during the lift.

even level two was a gift, they where very late getting into position after the fall

back to the lift timing. I have no doubt, if there is a rule of timing, that the skaters would be conscious of that. But how do the judges know if timing of lifts were less or more required? There must be some sort of an alert by the Tech Panel. Am I correct?

Joe

I believe the referee times the lifts as well as the program.
but the level is given by the teck/panel .they never held the position.hers or his....................................................
