But it is not a simple case of a skater and a coach parting ways. A most successful coach and school founder, got kicked out of the club by the club manager and the rink owner, timed at the very end of skaters' vacation and the beginning of working on the new season. Three top skating teams, 6 skaters including OGM and OSM, were cited as the reason he was expelled but the skaters have not said anything about it except that they are staying where he is no more. So far there is no public badmouthing of skaters and coach by each other. So if it was relationships gone bad between them, it is all behind the scene. And if the management was telling the truth, then it had to be serious when all these skaters were united against said coach.
What has been confirmed is the friction between the coaching partners though the firing management denied it was the reason for dismissal. Yet, Shpilband's admitted activities and alleged non activities as well as the friction between the coaches could have been the major contributors of the skaters' discontent, which then became the cited reason by the management for their decision to oust Shpilband.
So, no, I don't think this is an usual coach changing event and also the talkers have not been the fired coach and the skaters, at least not about their relationships.
eta. There could not have been a joint press release seeing that Shpilband was completely blindsided.

I'd prefer that too, but the firing (by the club) was handled in the way that senior staff are fired in North American businesses these days (terminated immediately, often escorted from the building, possibly cannot even clean out your desk). I think it's disrespectful myself, but it's the modern approach. And someone then went immediately to the media (either Arctic Edge or Igor himself). People tend to look for support through the media these days, rather than remaining discreet. You are definitely observing some cross-cultural differences, but also North American culture has changed over the past twenty or thirty years. Canadians are more private than Americans, I think, but that is probably changing too.

Well. if you look at this scenario,and have not read Katia's book, you would have no bias against Marina. No one has been disgusting. Not that I have seen. Yuna/Orser was a very different situation but people feel bad for someone who does well and still get's fired. We care because these top teams have us enthralled with discussions on every competition.
No one else has addressed in this thread, tho I easily could have missed it, how is it that three teams felt slighted bt Igor, and said "him or us." I do not believe that. Why would they not simply talk to him, if true he was working with other skaters and they felt miffed. If Igor felt his job was on the line, and his relationships with the kids he has done so much for, a sane person would say sorry, i'll do better. You are my priorities. End of problem.
Marina Zoueva is seen in Katia's account as the ringleader in Zhuk's firing. Likely it was deserved. But G/G were kids, and it looked like they went along. If he was drunk, not showing up to practice, that is plenty. They had enough reason to fire Zhuk there. And maybe G/G made it clear they would quit or go to another Army club. It was a group thing and Marina was the ringleader. We see this again in Canton. She does not want to be seen as the bad guy. If this was about business on the side, I think they easily could have resolved it. If true the 'kids' said him or us, well, it would have to be a really serious, unsolveable problem. Do you think those young people are that heartless and ruthless to let Igor be fired for something that could have been resolved? Are we to believe he would risk losing the top teams with so much work and effort needed before Sochi? It does not compute.
I do think if it was unanimous, then a serious, egregious, reason is being covered up. What could make the teams want him out? I hope there was not a serious thing like sexual harassment or inappropriate relationship. If USFS was apprised of this and are backing rink owner and Zoueva, it must be serious and they perhaps decided to not destroy his reputation, and frame it as they have.
For 'the kids' to give up one half (assuming equal talent/influence with Russian judges)of their powerhouse team and choose Marina, something big went down, not just sidebusiness. He is claiming he was blindsided and shocked, like Orser was. Orser seemed confused or at least pretended to be clueless. Igor is so shocked, he is trying to find Scott or someone to verify what he was told by the club/rink owner. So at the very least, it appears, according to Igor, he was not given any chance to figure out what was happening.
This really smells. Just as bad as Frank/Michelle and Yuna/Orser. KKonas who is a skating insider says to watch out for Marina. I will repeat how classless and selfish it was for her to confess she was in love with Sergei. Katia is greiving and maybe thinking, did my husband have feelings for her? Was something going on? Sergei and Zueva got on very well. I read the book years ago, no longer have it, but recall (someone who has the book correct if I am wrong, that Katia felt like the third wheel at times. Zueva and Sergei had things in common, great discussions. Marina was greif stricken but how selfish to act and say what she did? If a bit of extra money, a little attention to younger skater turned everyone against Igor to the point of firing him without any due process, then Canton has become a nasty, cut throat place.

Every competition will mean more. What does the board think about this friction which can only grow? If they all stay with Marina, then she is more valuable to them and perceived as more powerful. The 'kids' top 2 want to win and if they went along with sacking Igor for stated reasons, they obviously don't care about him and his wife and kids. We all think he'll land on his feet but getting fired makes him look bad to the skating world. All the gossip and rumours going on by the players actually make me feel he might not land so well after all. All us fans are speculating. Imagine the players.
Who do you think wins next years WC? Who wins Sochi? I can't imagine a little side business would break up this team and the huge plans They have likely two podium spots in Sochi with good health and could sweep. I know, everyone feels in Russia they will get a bronze ice dance medal whatever happens on the ice.
It leaves me with a bad taste, having read so many interesting takes. The punishment here doesn't fit the alledged crime. If USFS went along as implied it has to be serious. Do they really get involved with partner spats? It's a private business. Why would they call USFS? It looks like Marina had all the bases covered here, and this was coming for a while. I base my distrust of her modus operandi on what Katia said about two situations in the book.

As I said, I watch the skating and have enjoyed ice dance greatly since Vancouver but don't know about who coaches who. I'm more into singles. If D/W somehow get an edge and the judging angers Scott, I just cannot see this lasting until Sochi. Maybe this firing is a sign of tension of all kinds. It does sound like a lot of behind the back maneuvering went on. I think there are more splits to come. I don't know where Scott and Tessa would leave to, if they do. Who are the top ice dance coaches in Canada? I could see them returning home if they leave to train with thei families and biggest fans surrounding them. Who coaches Weaver/Poje? I don't think V/M would ever leave Marina tbh. They're the closest to her out of all the teams, and they mostly refer to her when talking to the press. Hypothetically, if they did leave, I think many coaches would want the Olympic and World Champions. As I've said before, Krylova (who coaches Weaver/Poje) and especially Zhulin love V/M.
I also don't think this had anything to do with the skaters, just Marina and Igor. Marina did say that there's no one yet who will replace him so maybe something actually bad happened that had them fire him. We'll never know anyway.

Skaters at this level are tough and brutally competitive. They make difficult decisions, usually always with a view to doing what will help them win. For them, that defines what is right. That is the nature of a competitor.
Winning coaches who give their all get dumped regularly. Skaters at this level have no mercy.
Fans often are wilfully blind to this more callous side of the skaters they adore. But that side is always there.
Skaters at this level have to be on side in a firing like this.
This firing was not done nicely. It was done in the most hurtful way possible to hinder Igor's ability, if only for a short while, to recover. That did not have to be done, but it speaks volumes about the character of the Canton rink management. The skaters, by their nature, wouldn't care less; they just don't have that kind of empathy in their dna. But it speaks to the nature (perhaps a necessary one) of most skaters who are successful in this sport.
We don't like to admit that, but we should.
VM and DW may have been caught inbetween cross-firing, but they are tough and choose to go with the stronger side who would most help them win. They probably had no choice but to react as best as they could. But whatever choice they made, they are as much a part of what went down as the Canton management who used every available advantage (surprise, timing) to wound Igor's ability to bounce back. They can't claim to be separated from it.
This whole ugly mess aside, I think that it would be good for the sport if VM and DW finished outside of the podium in years ahead. They had their run. And I hope that Igor has a hand in coaching the team that kicks their collective butts.

Of course it is serious- Olympic Gold Medal. D/W is practically the only hope of the US to get gold in Sochi. So USFS is ready to do whatever Marina's star fever says.
Or there is nothing to know, except the abnormal ego of some not young woman. Igor is not an ideal as a person. However he doesn't have a long train of dirty nasty deals againts fellow coworkers as Marina has.

:thumbsup: That is what I don't get: if the theory that USFS and Zoueva made a deal- she geta her-only OGM and the US get an OGM- is true, then the whole mess is just one big silly thing. Did the OGM of Evan NOT give them a lesson? Having champions that won not on the stage only, but also and mainly in backstage via dirty tricks of judges or coaches, will not bring the popularity of this sport back. They seriously undervalue the competence and even moraity of FS fans, most of which never bother to read or write on online boards. They just see on all scandals around and choose to pay for another sport event.
Now, wait a minute. In the days when the Soviet Union was ruthless about winning skating gold, did we want to see skaters like Gordeeva-Grinkov get their "collective butts" kicked for the good of the sport? In the days of the Cold War and the Iron Curtain, did we want Romanian gymnasts to end up off the podium in favor of some more enlightened country, or did we want to see Nadia Comaneci rack up another perfect 10? The coldness or warmth of the leadership doesn't have much to do with the quality of an extraordinary athlete. If skaters are the best in the world, they ought to win.
At this point D/W and V/M are the world's best. They are the best due to a combination of factors, including coaching and their own talent and determination. If Zoueva and Shpilband had a feud (and we don't know the story), they are not being "ruthless" by choosing a coach. They have to choose a coach. What should be an act of conscience in this matter--should they retire from skating? No. They have to choose either Shpilband or Zoueva. How does that make them deserve to finish off the podium?

Olympia, people just want to point a finger and make someone the bad guy (Marina, V/M, D/W, S/S) and someone the victim (Igor) instead of figuring what happened and where it went bad and when it could have been avoided. Something happened, it caused a rift between Igor and the rest and Igor got fired over it. Happens in business all the time...

If I may, let me play the angel's advocate to show it's possible to absolve or justify everybody involved from their respective perspectives.
The skaters had their rights to try to have their concerns addressed by some authority, either voluntarily or when inquired. If their discontent was the main reason for Shpiland's dismissal, then the issue must be indeed serious. If they were used as pawns and excuses, they had no choice but to make the best decision for their competitive careers once the coaching partnership is broken. Their benefits should in fact also be the coaches' priority or they should not continue coaching these students.
Zoueva was indeed unhappy with Shpiland's carrying out his intention of taking on his exclusive students and she saw it as a conflict of interests and a betrayal of their very successful business partnership. She might have even protested it as an advocate for their current and longtime students. Whether or not she sought his ousting, we don't know. Obviously she had approached him about the issue but he frustratingly didn't take it seriously. She might have been surprised at how far the management went though they officially claimed to not mind Shpilband taking on these students. (eta. It was likely because they had no legal authority in this matter so they took the action they could, expelling him from their property.)
Official reasons aside, the management's action speaks loudly that this was a business decision, planned and executed to maximize the deterring effect on a very strong potential competition. Brutal but very much in line with today's business practice. It's just business, not personal.
Shpiland seemed to be the perpetrator and initiator of the event. Yet he was blindsided and shocked at the consequence of his actions, incredulous that his students had any issue with him though aware of his former partner's objection to his recent activities. I find it hard to believe nobody had talked to him, possibly openly and even confrontationally by his partner, tentatively by the skaters, and floated by the management to verify his intention and test his reaction. His cluelessness was indicative of his insensitivity and naivety to others' understandable negative perceptions and reactions to his plan and actions. Apparently he had no bad intentions or plot against them all in trying to achieve something for himself apart from these others, and he therefore failed to address their concerns, even when presented to him. No, he is not evil, just self absorbed to be wise to other people's perspectives and interests and the brutality of today's business. However, he does have reasons to be a little arrogant, and his dismissal from the most successful Ice Dance medal factory is happily welcomed as a derailment of the most formidable competitors and as an opportunity to scoop him up as a most valued and desired coach. The treatment he received from the Canton management was testament to their respect for his power in the business. The treatment he will receive from the Russian federation will help him quickly re-establish himself as a foremost skating coach of today. We just don't know if either of the former partners will be as successful individually but their new rivalry instead of cooperation will make it very interesting for Ice Dancing.

The point you ended with is the thing that worries me the most. When the Beatles broke up, neither Lennon nor McCartney ever again wrote such astonishing and immortal music, with a few exceptions. The same was true of Burt Bacharach and Hal David and many other collaborations one could name, where the whole was greater than the sum of the parts. In the case of the Canton group, I hope that everyone concerned can continue to excel in skating at the present level. If not, then some person or combination of persons at Canton has managed to kill the goose that laid the golden egg, and it will be an object lesson to future generations of skaters. At least they and we have the glorious legacy of the 2010 Olympics. But it would be nice to look forward to more.

I don't get the "conflicts of interest" point. Zoueva herself creates /created programs for other teams not coached by her or Igor. And the same things happened/happening for many other coaches. And why would the rink management team and USFSA get involved? Is it that coaches from other countries can teach n. american skaters but not the other way around?

The partnership was on coaching, not choreography, and evidently Zoueva's choreographing activity did not impede her coaching the students.
The rink management acted to protect their business interests. They could not let it continue to the point of the prized top skaters leaving either because of disgust or, conversely, to follow Shpilband when he is good and ready. When two top American teams and Worlds medals were involved, USFSA had to be informed and consulted. This again had partly to do with business. It would not be wise to piss off the skating governing body. USFSA evidently had pondered the situation over and saw no better solution but to salvage it the best they could.
I don't see any relationship to Shpilband's original nationality at all. After all, Zoueva was Russian too. At present, Shpilband is American and Zoueva is Canadian. As well, both American and Canadian top teams are adversely affected while Russia has the most to benefit from this situation and God sent opportunity.

A conflict of interest happens when a person is offering a competing service. Shpiland wanted to start a side business offering the same services to the same client base as the business he had with Zoueva. His business would be competing for clients (and results). When Zoueva offers choreography to non-ice dance skaters, that isn't competing with their ice dance coaching business. It's a different service offered to a different client base.
This comes up in industries like graphic design, where a designer may work for a large agency but also have a side business freelancing for other clients. It's a conflict of interest if they are targeting the same client base (potentially becoming competition for their employer). It wouldn't be a conflict of interest, if, for example, the designer was offering photography services not graphic design. Or if the designer was working for a large corporation with a different type of work than what they are offering on the side.
I can see why Zoueva and the potentially the skaters as well could be bothered by this. But it also makes my wonder why he would want to do that - there must have been something else going on for him to want to start coaching on his own.

According to the article, she did not approach them directly. She asked a Lithuanian judge to talk to them. I assume it was yesterday or the day before.

Povilas mom is the president of the lithuanian federation and confirmed to the press that Zoueva approached Drobiazko & Vanagas. They declined the invitation cause they're still happy with their pro career in Russia. Povilas mom is concerned with Tobias & Stagniunas. They're still in vacation and haven't officially said anything yet. From what I understood, Povilas mom thinks that Tobias & Stagniunas may have to search for a new coach.
