ISU Decisions of the Council from Nov 2025

^ The point is, yes, figure skating is expensive. Synchro is expensive. It is expensive to train a singles skater up to elite level. Even taking group lessons as a beginner is expensive compared to nailing a basketball hope up on a telephone pole and playing in the street. We know this (and lament it).

Some sports are pricier than others. However, when the ISU decides to make things even more expensive for young athletes by creating a very dubious version of synchro, we got to call a spade a spade. It's not going to make it more accessible. It will be more expensive than before, no matter how you turn it around.

I think we could turn it around like this. There will still be 24s, 20s, 16s, etc., which have their own competitions, world championships. etc.

There will also be a new sport, 9s, for the extra rich who want to go to the Olympics. But right now no synchro skaters at all, rich or poor, can go to the Olympics. What are we giving up?

By the way, the Crystalettes held a "golfing outing" in September to raise money for their sychro skating program. :)

well.. again :) we are back to square one. If there is an Olympic sport with 9 skaters, that means that the other divisions will most likely be even less of interest and thus, even less funded. Look at Skate Canada, including synchro at Nationals. They are trying to give it some profile. They are all about inclusivity with same sex partnerships and avoiding Alberta. All of it is to promote participation of all kids. Not just the super rich kids. I have mentioned what happened to rugby already in this thread. If you think it's cool to have an olympic sport for the super rich, you can still enrol in bobsleigh.

The ISU created the Elite 12 with the Olympics in mind, but haven't actually supported that category. It has gotten nowhere, and I don't believe that they have the category at the ISU Synchro Worlds anymore. They did the one year, and then after that I haven't seen it on the schedule. I know Finland, US and Canada had/have a couple of the Elite 12 teams, but not sure about some of the other countries if anyone knows.....

My concern isn't just about funding, it's about support and commitment of the ISU. If the ISU's and IOC's track record hasn't been that good thus far, it doesn't give the warm fuzzies that reducing the size to 9 will. And if the 9 doesn't work are they going to reduce it again? Will they end up reducing it to 2 and then just call it a new ice dance category?

I think that there is actually a more basic question. Should synchronized skating be part of the Olympic Games at all?

For one thing, synchronized skating is a choreographers milieu. The typical viewer watching on TV (or spending thousands to experience the adventure of attending the Olympics in person) scarcely knows what athletic skills the participants are demonstrating. Higher, faster, stronger... more elaborately choreographed?

I think that the ISU is quite correct to be concerned that 99% of the viewers will have no idea about what the judges are actually scoring or about why one team won and another didn't.

Second, the whole idea of team sports in the Olympics is misdirected,in my opinion. Why should basketball be featured in the Olympic Games? If you like basketball, go watch the NBA playoffs. Why should Association Football be in the Olympics. Isn't there the World Cup every four years?

Do you like golf or tennis tournaments? What's wrong with the Masters or Wimbledon?

Third, I can't really blame the IOC (or the ISU. etc.) for making an effort (however feeble) at attracting a younger audience. Old people eventually die. Then what?

I can remember when ski jumping was the premier event of the Winter Olympics. Win the (Mens) Gold Medal and make a million dollars off the publicity and endorsement opportunities. You launch yourself into the air, then land a few seconds later (and a hundred meters downslope.)

Well, nowadays you are expected to do somersaults and twists while you are in the air, if you want to bring the sport up to date. (I don't know that there is any analogue for figure skating to "extreme" youth sports, though.)

At some point, I was divided but then, some sports like breakdancing and skateboarding have been included. So why not ?

Well, that's the same for rhythmic gymnastics or even artistic swimming. If you haven't tried some artistic swimming moves, you have NO IDEA it's probably the hardest sport in the world. It ranks really high on my radar. It's SO hard. Yet, some people think Esther Williams (who by the way was a very strong freestyle swimmer) and mermaids with gelled hair and nose clips when they see these admirable athletes.

Sure. Same in figure skating LOL yet they are not making it any simpler for the public to understand with the choreo elements in ice dance for instance.

? I don't agree with that. Some of the biggest moments for some of these sports have come to the Olympics. For instance, the gold medal victory for Canadian men in hockey on home ice. etc.
Do you like golf or tennis tournaments? What's wrong with the Masters or Wimbledon?
Nothing wrong with that. Gold and tennis are perhaps two sports that aren't needed at the Olympics. Yet, I do enjoy tennis, especially mixed doubles at the Olympics.

Wow :)

Ski jumping and acrobatic ski are two different sports. Not sure why the comparison between both. It's like comparing speed skating and figure skating saying that wow, skaters only needed to skate fast, now they need to jump while wearing beaded costumes. Crazy.

Other topics : Canada just revealed their hockey team for the games. A roster of 25 athletes, including 3 goal tenders.

I am pretty sure the IOC could cut this amount to 18 athletes and still have a wonderful tournament. And guess what, add the 7 cut athletes to synchro 9 = 16 :).

It's always possible to make things happen. But of course, I am no fool. Can you imagine the uproar if hockey was cut down to allow synchro :). HAHA :) In the sake of keeping the Olympic truce, I will say that I was just joking ;)

Well synchronised swimming is well embedded.

The list of activities that have at one time or another been deemed acceptable is jawdropping to say the least.

And at least synchronised skating does involve the team being a team, unlike the current so-called team event.

I think that's to give viewers a break after watching a few hundred heats, preliminaries, semis and finals in all possible strokes at all possible distances, and don't forget relays, in swimming races. When you are sufficiently glassy-eyed, you appreciate something that is pleasing to look at.

That's true, and the same goes for "team" gymnastics. Where's the team? Everyone just competes as an individual, then you add the numbers together.

Well, natch. How are you going to make any money going down a mountain side on skis?

My advice -- take up the violin. ;)
yeah right... as if playing the violin was gonna make people rich.

good for you, finding the exceptional violinist and exceptional olympian in one person, Vanessa Mae but, though I know you are looking to lighten up the mood in this thread, it is not helping.

the reality is that the ISU is bending over backwards for the very light chance of getting synchro to the olympics.. and they may succeed for 2030 but when people see how boring synchro 9 is, it will not be reprogrammed for 2034.

In the meantime, it will have most likely destroyed some infrastructure which has taken years and years to build within current synchro clubs

Boring is a matter of taste and culture. Witness the number of Olympic and other sports, and pretty much anything else people pay to watch, that are for other people totally MEGO.

do you watch synchro ? have you seen it at a rink ? everyone is entitled to their opinion but as someone who does like synchro, in its current format, I have a hard time believing that synchro 9 will be interesting. The whole point of synchro is to have these big figures on the ice. It's beautiful. 9 skaters is not going to work out for me... and I am pretty sure that I won't be the one calling it a watered down version of what synchro should and could be.

No, and I don't care for it or for the original version... or synchronised swimming, or hundreds if not thousands of other sport/media/activities/art/whatever and then more that other people find anywhere from mildly amusing to absolutely gripping. There is not a single event in the Summer Olympics that I would not pass up for snail racing but for some reason most fans do not agree with me. (And if we look at history there are way more less promising events that were a part of the Games, like town planning.)

I'm not saying that adopting it is a good or bad idea, TPTB have taken up whole swathes of proposals that I thought dreadful. This may well be one of them. I am just pointing out that being boring (to me, or you, or any specific person or people) is not really an argument one way or t'other.

That's too bad.

No need to do so, especially when you're not involved by the topic. It's a forum. Everyone has their opinion and it's pretty obvious at this point that some people are upset with this change. Many more indeed than people finding synchro 9 a good idea. So, here again. I think synchro 9 will be boring and the ISU is messing up again. Pretty aware that this is my opinion but for emphasis :ymmv
