Eating disorders are a problem everywhere. They aren't unique to Russian girls and no one tried to insinuate they were. And abusive coaching is not unique to Russia/Canada/[insert country here] either. My nobody low level coach (from the USA) called me fat or body shamed me very often once I started reaching higher levels until I found a new coach. And to be quite honest, I haven't told anyone because it's nerve racking. There's the possibility someone could think I'm lying. I also know for a fact that in figure skating culture/our societies culture I'll be told to "suck it up, buttercup" because that's "what it takes" to be a champion. So if you were wondering why athletes don't speak up about these issues, that's why. Because we get mocked for doing so. Rarely does someone who has the power to do something about the problem have sympathy for the athletes.
