Johnny Weir Journal Entry April, 2008

Johnny Weir's Journal said:
I know we have a lot of bad press out there, but all reporters take things out of context and flip stories around to sell, and I really am not heartless and bitter towards Evan. I am happy to have a rival who is so competitive and who keeps pushing me to better myself.

It's nice to see Johnny do a bit of a 180 on the whole thing. I honestly do feel he's right that a lot of what has been going on the last couple of years with their quotes back and forth were misconstrued.

Granted they fed into it themselves, but all in all when I've seen them at Nationals they have been anything but mean spirited.

I also noticed he had a lot of "Team USA" comments, maybe he's finally understanding how to play the game of skating politics on the national level. ;)

here's hoping next season is just as bright for him.

In regards to the "team" notion, men's singles skating is a SINGLES sport. It's not hockey or basketball. Ergo, sometimes your deepest rivalries are within your own country. This can be a bitter or a friendly rivalry, but in all fairness, figure skating is every man/woman/pair/couple for themselves. Tennis, for example, is like that (granted, the $$ and dynamics of the sport are different, but you know what I mean.) I'm not advocating one type of approach or another, but every athlete dedicates their life to the sport and they are human - thus, personalities, emotions, etc. are always a factor.

And, of course, the media presentation of the whole thing is critical. My cousin is in TV and print journalism, and she told me some pretty appalling stories of how things get re-edited and then distributed as "news."

That was a very thoughtful and well written journal entry. I'm happy Johnny views the season as a success. I have to agree with him.

That was a nice entry. Smart of him not to comment on the great quad debate - and to be so positive about the other skaters, Evan particularly. I think Johnny can be very proud of his season and hope it'll be a good base for him looking towards next season.

I also noticed that on his favorites page, he lists When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit among the books! I love that book, and was surprised to see it pop up on the list as it's not particularly well-known.

All the Federations send their 'Teams' to the Worlds. Johnny is part of the USFS Team.

He skated well, and that is what makes him happy together with his first Worlds medal.

He is also a Russophile (nothing wrong with that). I would like him to proceed with getting Russian citizenship. I know mother stands in the way but he is of age and can do what he wants now.

Who said Johnny wants a Russian citizenship? I am a fan of another country and I go visit there as much as possible but I do not want to become a citizen of that country. Maybe I misunderstood that statement. :)

Great journal entry! He sounds very happy and upbeat, as well he should. He really turned things around this year, and I can't wait for next season!

I really like what he said about Evan. I think they should shut down the whole "bitter rivalry" thing by becoming BFF's. Maybe go out for coffee and do each other's hair. :p

It made me sad to read that he wishes he was performing more U.S. shows in the off-season. Too bad SOI didn't invite him to join the tour.

Huh? Has Johnny said that he wants to apply for Russian citizenship, but his mom is standing in the way? How the heck did I miss that? :sheesh: Sounds like wishful thinking on your part.

If you read my post slowly, you will notice that I said that, and I did not say anything about Johnny wanting to go or not. I'm all for Johnny being happy and it was just a suggestion.

See reply above. Sounds like you are jumping to conclusions. There is no reason for me to have such a wish.

Okaaaaay. I have now read your post slowly. To me, this comment sounds like wishful thinking.

I would like him to proceed with getting Russian citizenship.

And this comment makes it sound like he's actually considered it, but his mom is stopping him.

I know mother stands in the way but he is of age and can do what he wants now.

There is no need for me to "jump to conclusions" since you laid it out there in black and white. Also, how do you "know" his mother stands in the way of anything? Johnny is headstrong and does what he damn well pleases. One of the main reasons he had to split with Priscilla Hill is because he was calling all the shots. I somehow doubt that the guy who skated to My Way is letting his mom run his life. He's been "of age" for almost 6 years now.

Since Johnny has never mentioned wanting Russian citizenship, your comments seem random and out of place. I'm sure I should've just rolled my eyes and moved on.

I'm surprised at you, Joe. While Johnny loves Russian culture, he has never at any time expressed any desire to become a Russian citizen, and even if that was what he wanted to do, his mother wouldn't stand in his way.

A casual statement like that can expand to a gigantic kerfuffle.

I remember Johnny saying in an interview some time ago that he would love to live in Russia one day. Never did it say he wanted to be a citizen!!

back on topic... I didn't realize Johnny was *that much* (ok a few months) older than I was, for some reason I thought he was younger lol

Maybe Johnny is finally growing up. It has taken him much longer than the average Joe, but hopefully his new mature attitude will follow him into next season.

Thanks sillylionlove for saving me. He also said quite recently in one of his interviews that his mother would not allow him to train in Russia.

I have no idea what wishful thinking is about. What am I wishing for?

I am proud for Johnny and proud OF him. It can be a very daunting challenge 'to turn things around,' and he certainly did that this season. I hope this new confidence and work ethic will continue. I'll be thinking of him as he turns 24- I share his birthday- altho there may be a few more candles on my cake.

Anyone have any thoughts on what might me great music for him for next season?

wow. Johnny shocked me again. I can't believe this is the same guy. He sounded actually gentile about Evan and even congratulated Brian and Jeff. Well I have to say, way to go Johnny. I like you more and more each day now. Galina is working wonders.

as for good music... I would love to see him skate to Phillip Glass (i said that last year) for the SP, and 1492 Conquest of Paradise for the free.

.... no... no more firebird... Johnny's a bit more creative with music selection, and I hope that he continues with that.
