Johnny Weir Journal Entry April, 2008

No one is talking about the ifs in the way they are talking about strong arsenals.
Joe

Well, the strongest weapon in any arsenal is consistency, imo. In that, oddly enough, Johnny was second only to Takahashi, taking this season as a whole. That seemed to be the game plan of his team--skate clean and rely on positive GOE to make the difference in points, since the base value of his programs was less than some of the other skaters. I admit, I prefer this, as quality rather than the "big tricks" is more important (and aesthetically pleasing) to me.

Can he count on that next season? Probably not. He's going to have to work on transitions, for one thing. That's usually his weakest point as far as PCS goes. The quad--I don't know. I'm inclined to agree with Mathman that, for Johnny, it may be a better idea to ditch it in favor of high value combinations and positive GEO. Obviously, he can do beautiful quad combos in practice, but in two years, he hasn't been able to translate that into consistent quads in competition. Not saying that it won't happen, but I would rather him work on getting his steps and spins up to level 4, with +GOE than obsess about getting 1/2 more revolutions (as compared to a 3A) on a jump.

If you are really glad for Weir, why do you always add the words but or however or if...........then, bringing up something you think is negative about him.

My impression from your posts is you are not really glad about anything when it comes to Johnny Weir.

I´m very glad, but I cannot help also being a realistic person and not a blinded fan of any skater.

Joe, I know that you are trying to be fair. :) You seemed to be annoyed that more than one person responded on the same subject. It just happened that several people are having similar opinions. Shouldn't they express them?

I think their opinions were thoughtful and fair. It's unfair to crown "legion of Johnny fans" to deemphasize their opinions whenever someone say something for Johnny. JMO.
As long as we are fair to all skaters, I agree with you, and that means the skaters with low fan base. You have to admit that the popularity of Johnny is overwhelming copared to other skaters of his calibre. Nothing wrong with that! He deserves his popularity but there is hardly any corrective criticism and mostly opinions of skating skills which we all know and agree to.

Joe

PS. Also check out Seafoam's 2nd paragraph which explains what Johnny needs to work on. That's the difference between a fan who cares and a fan who gushes. JMO

Of course I can see you are very glad, very glad to put down Jonnny wherever and whenever you possibly can. You are saying you are being realistic. But your " What if " game, way of thinking is not realistic. I see your thinking as coming from your wish for Johnny not to succeed.

You seem to be very concerned about the image of the word blinded. I can easily be realistic and see what parts skaters need to work on, but I don’t need to point it out to them at every opportunity, especially at a time of celebration for a World Medal. I have never seen any compliment from you for Johnny, without putting him down more than you complimented.

Come to think of it, I don’t remember you complimenting him at all. Whereas I’ve never seen you do the same when it comes to Evan Lysacek. I guess you are blinded Evan fan.

All skaters need support. Nothing wrong with fans who gush and show some love.

The world could use some more of it.

Johnny has a lot of devoted fans. A few may be blind to his faults. In the same way, Evan has some fans that think he can do no wrong either. I am certainly one of Johnny's biggest and most outspoken fans. I still feel quite free to comment when I think he is off base in issues such as music selection, eating habits etc. Oh, and might I add...GO JOHNNY!

I think all the "what iffing" is useless. You can have a point base that is head and shoulders above the rest of the guys but if you don't stand up you can't win. That goes for everyone. There are cases where a person lucks into a medal. I think one of the biggest is Kimmie Meissner winning a Worlds that had no Arakawa Cohen or Slutskaya, but you have to admit there were other girls there who could have won. Kimmie stood up. And that's not taking into consideration figure skating "judge's opinion". We all know how accurate that can be sometimes. However, in any sport whether individual or team there are days when the EXPECTED "best" doesn't win. I'd polish Johnny's bronze medal for him any day. He earned it and he deserved it.
