Ice Rink Federation Cancels Disciplinary Action for Lee Hae-in and You Young...a knot in the settlement of the main lawsuit

The Korea Skating Union announced on the 13th that it has canceled the heavy punishment imposed on Lee Hae-in (Korea University) and You Young (Kyung Hee University) in figure skating women's singles.

An official from the federation said, "We concluded the lawsuit with the two players with mediation," adding, "We took into account the court's judgment on the decision to dispose of them."

Lee Hae-in and You Young were referred to the federation's Sports Fair Committee in May last year after they were found to have drunk alcohol in their accommodation during the off-season training for the national figure skating team in Varese, Italy.

The federation imposed a three-year suspension on Lee Hae-in and a one-year suspension on You Young, saying that while investigating the two players, they confirmed unpleasant things besides drinking.

Lee Hae-in applied for a retrial with the Korea Sports Council's Sports Fair Committee, the federation's top organization, but the FTC rejected the request, saying the federation's disciplinary action was appropriate.

The interested person, who was confirmed to be disciplined, applied for a provisional injunction to suspend the effect of the disciplinary action to the court, and the Seoul Eastern District Court issued a citation ruling in November last year.

Lee Hae-in, who temporarily restored his qualification as a player according to the court ruling, returned to the player and restored his national team status.

Young You also applied for an injunction to suspend the effect of disciplinary action in March and received a citation ruling.

The federation continued the main lawsuit separately from the ruling on the provisional injunction citation, but recently decided to conclude the related contents after the inauguration of new chairman Lee Soo-kyung.

The federation invalidated last year's disciplinary action through mediation with Lee Hae-in and You Young, and decided to suspend their qualifications for less than four months even if they are disciplined again for related cases in the future.

As a result, Lee Hae-in and You Young, who have not been active for more than four months, will be able to continue their careers normally.

The road to participation in the 2026 Milan/Cortina D'Ampezzo Winter Olympics has also opened.

The federation will decide two female figure skating singles players to compete in the Milan-Cortina D'Ampezzo Winter Olympics at the national team selection match later this year.

"Thank you to those who worried and cheered for us for a long time," Lee Hae-in said through his agency. "We have become stronger through this event. I will repay you with the skating that I can do best."

Korea has so many good female skaters.. When they didn't earn three spots this year there was a lot of crying undoubtedly. There is a good chance neither of these skaers or at least a fair chance neither of these skaterss will represent Korea at the olympics.

I wouldn't blame KSF. Lee and You actually had alcohol during the training camp and brought the boy who was a minor to the women's dorm. They had to act according to the rules.

I think that the legal principle before the court was whether the punishment fit the crime. The court mediators held that in this case the punishment was of unreasonable severity given the relative triviality of the rules-breaking offense.

True but irrelevent. What if every college kid who did one of those things got kicked out for a year? Punishment did not fit the crime. I know college kids from the 1960s , and one in particular, who did things worse and went on to get PHDs and did great for medical science. Let he who be without sin cast the first stone.

Exactly. Some people in college majored in Math and other STEM disiplines and went on and did great things for society, after having a drink in their room with a girl. Should we have suspended them for one year?

Let's hope they receive some compensation for this horror inflicted upon them. KSU should be disciplined.
It would be nice but it wont happen. At least there is a new sherriff at the KSU. The world is full of injustice. The true evil is when good people do nothing.

About "compensation" reading between the lines of this announcement I get the impression that this was a negotiated settlement. The skaters sued the federation, or threatened to, and when the court appointed mediators indicated that the skaters had the best of the legal argument, something was worked out to settle the case out of court. We will probably never know any further details.

Seems like You Young got the rougher deal in the end. Deemed a less major offence by KSF, so a shorter initial suspension, but Lee's was so out-of-proportion that she had to fight, and came back earlier, while You missed the whole season.

I agree. But at the end of the day, Hae-in had a big stick. A real court of law said she was slandered by the KSU by basically being called a child molester. Which of course legally she was not. I dont know the Korean legal system but I dont think the KSU would want to go into a litigation trial with that ruling against them. In the US, working against a lawyer working on contingency, they would have had to pay a bunch in legal fees alone. Wonder how Min-sol Kwon is doing these days? The main thing is that there seems to have been a change in leadership at the KSU....good. There was also one at the USFS, and if my spies are correct, it wasnt pretty.......

Yeah, it is always amusing how the losing side is allowed legal language in their (non-) apology that enables them to backpedal without actually admitting that they did anything wrong.

"An official from the federation said, 'We concluded the lawsuit with the two players with mediation," adding, "We took into account the court's judgment on the decision to dispose of them.'"

I bet they did "take the court's judgment into account.". :)

For me (I have been sick, injured, and busy and cruising) this is the first I have heard that Young was in on a law suit. I hope she continues for her own self. I have always enjoyed watching her live and ducking around the handrails in the arena to sit with other Koreans. The best outcome (that I can state here, anyway) would be to see her happy 10 years from now and to see this mess as just a bump in the road of life that lead to her happiness.
