Ladies Free: Article (spoilers)

Not to repeat some "blah blah" but we all know that nothing is over until it's over.

Can't wait to see the protocols - I assume tomorrow once the Free Dance is complete. Someone said Irina did a 3/3/2 as one of her combos. Have no idea if that is a) true or b) called that way.

I get the impression that Irina takes on every competition as though it may be her last. And given the balancing act with her medical condition, that makes sense. But I was thinking about this in a broader sense. None of us knows what could happen on any given day to change life as we know it, or alter our goals. Assuming that is what she's doing (a truly one day at a time thing - not a strategy for peaking here or later, etc.) that we could all take note of that. None of us - skaters or non-skaters - ever really knows what lies ahead.

Whether this is her thinking or not, I'm glad she is going for the gusto each time out, and I should be doing more of that in my life.

Irina wins with a total score of 198.06
Now if she can just get those program component scores in transitions, choreography and interpretation up into the low eights, we'll see some real scores, LOL.

It's a nice thought Doggygirl, but I'm afraid I just don't feel your optimism.
IMO, the only way she loses is if she doesn't compete, and I certainly don't want that to happen.

Congrats to Irina.

I'm sorry you feel that way. But what the heck - this is just a discussion board after all. I hope you know that the "optimism" I'm talking about has more to do with us "regular folk" than any skaters.

Irina's 3/3/2 at CoR

Red Dog, Irina's 3/3/2 was a 3sal/3loop/2toe. Her other combinations were 3 toe/2toe and 3flip/2toe. No 3lutz/2toe.

I was referring just to skating Doggygirl. I try to have more optimism in real life!

I really hope I'm wrong ... only time will tell.

C'mon gang - It was written on the wall last season about this season. Irina is Cop conscious. Her scores are up there with the men with quads. 198.06 and probably 200.00 in torino. Those scores will last a long time.

Will Mao top her scores in 2010?

I can't imagine any scenario of Irina losing in Torino.
Give her the medal now.
Wasn't it just 4 years ago that we said the very same thing? Hand the medal to Irina, and if not Irina, then definitely to Michelle?

Well...

Well, it ISN'T over till it's over. Alot can happen between now and then. Irina had NO competition in this competition (no pun intended). Let's wait and see how she does in 3 months. Yes, she has the best shot at winning the oGM but like I said, alot can happen and I think the judging at the Olympics will be a whole other matter. They won't just hand the high points to her like they do now.

This is a valid point and a whole 'nother matter that I brought up in another thread.

But it doesn't matter, the system. I can't see ANY way Irina can be outskated right now. Sorry, but I just can't.

You read my thoughts. There have been too many surprises at Olympics to call anything ahead of time.

Here's a news flash: There was no movement among the top three from SP to LP standings and only one place difference in 4th place. It seems like a lot of the GP events have had at least one big change between the SP and LP, or maybe I'm just thinking of the men.

How did Ando skate?

This Is How I See The Olympics-Women

O.k. this is it for me in a nutshell for Irina to lose the OGM (and I am not wishing this on her mind you) the following would have to happen:
a) Irina would have to skate a flawed program
1) This is possible with the pressure of the Olympics being what it is.
b) Sasha would have to skate a flawless program with a triple, triple, double combination.
1) This is not impossbile but it is not likely given her history.
c) Michelle would have to come prepared to deliver a competitive program and well trained.
1) This is not likely given that she has been injured and is still recovering, that she has no CoP feedback and that her first competition will be Nationals.
2) That Michelle has dropped the loop from her repetoire and she has not done a 7 triple jump program
in quite a while.
d) Shizuka would have to deliver a flawless program with presentation that out shines Irina.
1) This is possible but consistency is still a problem for her. The upside of this is I think she will be going for it. Out of all of Irina's competitiors, Shizuka has the best chance of beating Irina if Irina skates a slightly flawed program.
So it isn't over till it's over, but Irina is definitely the one to beat and her biggest competitor is herself.

I disagree. EVERYONE knows what lies ahead. She already has the GPF gold. And the Olympic gold as well.

Well, I don´t know about Slutskaya for sure. It is still a bit over two months to the Olympics, will she be able to maintain her condition and get it even better technically? Like lots of people are saying so often: The ice is slippery and anything can happen under huge pressure... The only thing that seems sure this moment, is that the judges have made their decision, BUT she has to deliver at the Olympics. If she doesn´t, the winner will be somebody else.

But here's where I differ with you ... I believe Irina would have to skate a seriously flawed program to lose. Just a few slight mistakes won't be enough to offset her high PCS scores. And I just don't see her making several major mistakes ... she's too good a skater for that.

ITA nymkfan - Given Irina with a flawed program, at this stage of the competitions, it would have to be very flawed like doubling several triple jumps. Doubling intended triple jumps brings the scores down quite a bit and that is the only way Irina can lose the competition because it is her Technical that is so powerful.

I thought for a while that Sasha had the best shot of beating Irina but I think now Shizuka has. Shizuka's technical is up there with Irina's and her program by TT is not so CoP conscious as it is beautiful.

Will Shiz get the PCS scores over Irina?

So far the PCS have been pretty consistent. Irina recieved marks of 63.68 and 63.60 in PS in her two events. Shizuka got 58.72 and 60.24.
