The result is predictable. Mao is a lovely jumper. She is in great spirit this year... Irina is strong, healthy, and happy. She really want to get the gold, and her mind and body give her the possibility...Nakana has the wrapped leg problem, but she shows how hard she worked and tried to be on top...Alissa still needs to improve the jumping technique and strength...

The triple Axel rules. Change Mao's triple Axel to a double and Irina wins the jumping contest, 41.3 to 40.9. As it is, Irina won every phase of the contest except the jumps.

Mao also showed both savvy and stamina by putting all of her three combination jumps at the end of ther program, gaining the extra ten per cent on her 3Lo+2Lo+2Lo, 3F+2Lo, and 3Lz+2Lo. (Those 2-loops start to add up after a while -- that's 6.6 extra point for tacking on those four 2-loops.)

Maybe we will start to see skaters back-loading their program to cash in on this feature of the CoP.

Whatever happens in Torino, I think we have seen the future today.

With Nakano getting an automatic Olympic spot for medaling in the GP final, this puts Fumie in a tough predicament. She will probably have to win Japanese nationals to be placed ahead of Ando or Arakawa.

My-oh, Mao My! Just saw the downloads over at the Skate Video site. I cannot decide if I prefer her technique or artistry....she is absolute perfection on both counts. WOW....

THE BEST will not be in Torino. Ladies & gentlemen, we just saw in Tokyo what should have been the 2006 Olympic Gold-Medal winning performance. In Torino, women will vie for second best lady skater of the season. That's the bottom line.

And according to MMs statistics, it appears the judges are still trying to hold up Irina in the GOEs and PCS. Those Bielmans, apparently got Irina a higher non jump score. It's too bad that Mao kid can't go to Torino. I would love to stop reading that Lipinsky was the youngest skater to win an Oly.

In articles for the LP she said she felt much better today than yesterday and does not mention feeling unwell at all. Irina skated a good program in the LP from all reports. In the yahoo! article on the LP, Irina says she can't understand why the judges gave her such low component scores and that she feels she didn't lose this competition.

Slutskaya, the 2002 Olympic silver medalist, tasted her first defeat this season and complained that the judges gave her an unreasonably low score of 60 for her artistic performance. She usually earns 64-65.

"I did not lose," she said sarcastically. "I don't understand why my programme component score was so low."

But she said her second-place finish here was "not really important and was just another step going to Torino (Turin)."

ITA. Mao is an awesome young skater but she lacks the maturity of a more experienced skater like Irina or Sasha or Shizuka. I do feel she may be overmarked on the PCS simply because she is able to land all her jumps. It is a pity that Mao cannot go to the 2006 Olympics after beating the reigning world champ.

I am really concerned about Irina. She could be having health problems at the worst possible time. I hope she can be healthy for the Olympics.IMO she should skip either the Russian nationals or the Europeans.

If she skated to her potential her PCS scores should be 5-6 points better than Asada, but then again Asada was overscored in PCS scores at Eric Bompard too so it is hardly a surprise. I dont blame Irina for thinking the PCS scores were unfair.
