Las Vegas Selected to Host 2021 Skate America

Now that vax companies are offering to jab any competitor going to the Olys, I dont see why they wouldnt jab anyone doing other international comps. Win win win. Spectators also, IMHO. I will now stop so the mods dont gig me for getting political again. :) (KC , Omaha, and Milwaukee were pleasant surprises for me. Good venues.

... The Orleans Hotel and Casino, which is adjacent to the arena, will offer a special fan rate during the competition. More information regarding lodging will be available at 2021SkateAmerica.com on May 26. ...

Hotel update, in case anyone cares at this point:

The Orleans Hotel spectator block is sold out, but ...

FWIW, the USFS page has added a link for access to a spectator block at a different hotel: Gold Coast Hotel.
(Caveat: Gold Coast Hotel is *not* adjacent to Orleans Arena.)

Disclaimer: This post is merely a completely neutral FYI.
I am not trying to put Gold Coast Hotel into a positive -- or negative -- light.
I know next to nothing about Gold Coast Hotel one way or the other.

i guess i'm not sure why they picked Vegas for the 3rd year in a row if an audience will be in attendance...i thought the whole idea of having Vegas host SA and Nationals was the bubble concept with no outsiders.

Could the reason be that figure skating in the US is not exactly a huge draw and Vegas is a huge draw and they might be able to get some of the general visitors to Vegas to buy tickets and check out a figure skating competition?

About Las Vegas being selected for the third year in a row. It's a great location - not just for FS fans and the arena has a good thing going with it being so close to the hotel. Also, hasn't Moscow hosted Rostelecom for like 15 years or something?

I think this is part of it. Perhaps they are also hoping that people will bring family members because there are other things to do...I like the travel logistics -- non-stop flights, and the hotels are close to the airport. You can walk from your room to the arena in maybe 10 minutes or so.

The Gold Coast Hotel was mentioned above and is a sister property to the Orleans. They are located about a mile and a half apart. There is a free shuttle that runs between the two hotels. Both hotels are west of the strip (Las Vegas Blvd.).

ADDING -- BTW, saw it was 101 degrees yesterday in Vegas. It should be a little cooler by October -- maybe low to mid 90's.

The pandemic might also have been part of it as they already knew - when the decision was made - that they could pull off a bubble at the Orleans if needed. I hope we'll have a "normal" event with full live audience and international skaters. Fingers crossed! Vaccine rollout internationally is slow compared to the U.S.

For Skate America, average daytime high temp will be 80 degrees, morning low of 55 degrees. Mid-late October is quite pleasant in Vegas.

And remember folks, you'll be fighting (maybe literally😄) with crazed Eagles fans if you venture into Vegas itself. I already know three people who have booked flights to attend the game with the Raiders that weekend, and I suspect the stadium will be majority Philly fans.

My fandoms meet, but not for me ;)

We here in the US sure do care about football alright! :ROFLMAO: 🏈

I can't speak for the all of the US ;)

But I was born and raised in Philly (think Mare of Easttown, those are my people😄) and we bleed green. We could care less about college football, but we bleed green for our Iggles. ETA: and I have never seen a fan base follow their team around like the Eagles fans. Kind of like Yuzu fans.

I do need to say, not much figure skating fan crossover, at least for me🤷‍♀️

My future hubby will be there. If Gracie were there too that would be amazing.

When I was in Marching Band in College, we used to go to the Vegas Invitational every fall. The weather was always beautiful. The Summer heat was long gone and the UNLV Stadium was awesome. The good thing about Vegas is that there are other activities besides gambling that are fun for the whole family.

So this other hotel is walking distance? I went to their link, and it didn’t have a map with both. I am still holding off until there is some clarity on quarantines here and participation in the States.

The Gold Coast is not walking distance to The Orleans, but they are “sister” hotels & there is frequent free shuttle service between them.

What is walking distance is the skating arena to the Orleans; directly connected.

Okay, I booked across the street from Orleans in case everything works out. Now, it’s just quarantine and what happens to the athletes participation. 🤷‍♀️

Which hotel is across the street? I might check that out, since Orleans is so expensive.

Ehh, I think that's going to be a thing for the travel and hospitality industry for awhile to recoup their losses from 2020 and early 2021

Also, hotels and transportation are going to be expensive/crowded/difficult to find that weekend, because not only is there Skate America, but there is also EDC and an NFL Eagles - Raiders game.
