" Laurine Lecavelier through thick and thin
When baby Laurine steps on the ice for the first time at 2 and a half years old, she has no idea that, from teenage years on, she is to become an international athlete. At an early age, she is already a fast learner. At 4 and a half, she skates with a group of children way older than her. She has potential, she is driven and she is fearless. In 2011, she is 15 and wins her first international junior competition, the Triglav Trophy in Slovenia. The very same year she has already got her start on the JPG tour, 12th in Italie, 10th in Estonia. 2012 sees her winning the Bavarian Open, then being 2nd at Cup of Nice. She wins Maldost Trophy of Zagreb (Croatia) in 2013. In 2013 again, but during the first part of the new season, she definitely establishes herself in the French skating landscape with climbing on the National podium (3rd) and she still hasn't leaved it to this day ! 2nd from 2014 to 2016, French National champion in 2017, 2nd again in 2018. Her international career goes on, she will never be less than 5th (Cup of Nice) in all the competitions she is part of. She is 8 times on a podium and reaps nice victories (NRW Trophy in Germany, Golden Bear in Croatia, Mentor Torun Cup in Poland, and Cup of Tyrol in Austria. In 2015, one of her of her nicest "feats of arms" is her 4th place at Winter Universiades in Grenada, Spain. The figure skating world Elite welcomes her with open arms at her first Senior Grand Prix, Bompard Trophy 2014. She is immediately one of the audience favorites thanks to her charm, her grace and her excellent technical skills. Fast and light on the ice, she is also pretty, radiant, cheerful, her personnality makes an impact. Two years later, during the last time of Bompard Trophy in Paris before it moves to Grenoble, she allows herself the luxury of ranking above some stars, already known or about to be, like Mao Asada (Japan), and Gracie Gold (USA), when she finishes 6th. She is 5th at the European championships of Ostrava (Czech Republic) in 2017, a brilliant result, beaten only by superstars like Evgenia Medvedeva (RUS), A. Pogorilaya (RUS, Carolina Kostner (ITA and M. Sotskova (RUS). From now on, Laurine is playing with the very big girls.
However, life isn't that simple for her. Injuries and other health troubles are disturbing her training. But she is much too proud to use that as an excuse for the pifalls that make her stumble, she doesn't even want to talk about it. Boston 2016 : her first World championships; She skates with a damaged psoas and a pelvic stress fracture. She doesn't qualify for the free program. In 2017 in Helsinki, the same World championships are a bit kinder to her : 18th. Season 2017/2018 will be a real roller-coster, an obstacle course [French"parcours du combattant" is used in the military sense] with air pockets, raisings and storms. Her two programs are changed mid-season because she doesn't feel confident with the ones created. The neo-classic music by Ashram (her SP) is replaced by "Summer of 42" by Michel Legrand, more romantic. She gives up her Marylin Monroe medley to go back to her former "Grease" LP. Both changes will do her good. But before this... When she had easily won Masters in 2016, she loses the 2017 edition to the benefit of Maé-Bérénice Meité, for a little bit more than 1 point. French championships in Nantes will not be more lenient to her, she gives up her National title to the same Maé. 8th at Skate Canada she can catch her breath again. But she falls back at the 11th place of Grand Prix de France in Grenoble, after she totally misses her SP. 11th at Moscow Europeans isn't that bad but Laurine is far from being content with it. In March, she regains confidence at Luxemburg Spring Cup, finishing 4th behind three top billing Japanese girls.
She lands in Milano for the World Championships 2018 in better shape, determined, less stressed than usual and it works : 15th of the SP, she beats two of her contenders and finshes 14th. After all the twists and turns she went through for the past two seasons (she switched coach twice, moved to the US, sustained new injuries), this result is rather promising. Laurine says she is happy. About to leave on tour with the French team, she has regained her impish sweet little face and her glimmering eyes. She is expected to be at Masters in Villard de Lans for her 2018/2019 first competition in September, then at two Grand Prix, Skate America and Grand Prix de France. She is currently working relentlessly on her new programs with her coach, Kori Ade, in the Colorado High Desert. Being away from home does not bother her, it is propitious to her hard working nature and it makes it easier to focus, she says. A few brief calls in France and Switzerland [*] are scheduled this summer in order to polish the details of her programs and her technique. She is working on a possible future triple Axel and could even, one day, set to work on quadruples ! At 22, Laurine still has beautiful years ahead of her. A little more luck, a little less [health] mishaps, a little more recognition from the judges, it is all what she needs to climb the ladder, as she already has what it takes to be a great figure skater : flawless glide, talent, the natural capacity to convey emotion, a tremendous hold on life, the courage of a soldier. Let's meet her again on "Villardian" soil [on Villard de Lans soil] in a little bit less than two months."
[*] she worked with Jean-François Ballester and Bruno Massot several weeks in la Chaux de Fonds this summer as well as a few days prior to Masters. JF Ballester is with her in Villard de Lans. She will work with them again in the near future. And she'll soon be on the ice so bye for now
