Let's Chat About Less-Known Skaters!

headstand ending...what the bleep? That sounds scary; reminds me of the "headbanger" pairs move in The Cutting Edge or maybe Blades of Glory.

Sam is wonderful, even if his FS music edits did drive me crazy this year. ;) Hope to see much more of him!)

You would need to watch either of Kirk's programs from Nats (since he used it twice  ) maybe not a headstand? an arm stand? In any event, very much Kirk ;)

thanks, I'll try to find those. Whatever kind of stand it was, gotta see it!

Try this post, the pose should be the ending one on these vids

ah, so...got it!

It seems Coupe de Printemps has paywall, but there are some interesting skaters who maybe worth of to mention here. I will look later if I have time watch and it is not too expensive, I may pay. I would pick Kristina Škuleta-Gromova, EST. The most one of us who follow small competitions probably think she is not well known, as she has also medalled in those comps, but there are so many who don't. If you have time, come and watch with us also those, there are pearls. Is Ava Marie Ziegler, USA, how known now? Many of us saw her first time last autumn and she surprised us. There are also some names I don't remember before, I am always interested to watch those skaters, no matter how difficult their programs are, it is anyway something new to watch new names to skate.

Someone tell me more about Matthew Markell? I just saw an On Ice Perspectives clip of him skating at TCC. Gorgeous! Does everyone know about him, and I’ve just missed it?

I don't know much, but here's his LP at 2020 Canadian Nationals. Tracy Wilson (miss her commentary) tells us that he was 2018 Canadian Junior Champion, and that he choreographed this program (To Build a Home) himself. A quick Google search says he was 15th at Junior Nationals the year before he won (quite a jump). Apparently this year at Senior Nationals he had a great SP and was 6th (can't find a video and I didn't watch), but a disappointing LP left him in 11th. 2020 was his highest finish of 9th. His K&C was delightful here! He turned 23 years old this month. I am impressed with what I've seen of him.

Canadians, can you please tell us more?

Elladj Balde is a Canadian skater. I always looked forward to his performances. Elladj was Canadian Jr. champion in 2008 but never managed to reach the podium at Senior Nationals. He seldom was seen outside of Canada, but did win Nebelhorn in 2015. His programs there.

Fs

His career was hampered by an ACL tear and five concussions. He was a wonderful exhibition skater, and has performed in many shows around the world, including in Russia.

Canadian SOI 2022

Baldé is a co-founder of the Figure Skating Diversity and Inclusion Alliance.

A nice, relatively current piece on Elladj.

He is popularizing skating on social media with wonderful videos of skating on lakes and glaciers.

His Instagram account where also posts his Tik Tok videos.

There is a small fan fest for him

And a Wikipedia entry as well

There is not much more to say I think. He has beautiful lines. His jumps can be very nice (he doesn't have a full arsenal to be competitive). The few times I have seen him skate live, I really enjoyed his presence and skating skills. He is also super nice (was sitting next to his mom at some event). I wish he would be more consistent.

he really does have a beautiful Ina Bauer (I'm a total sucker for them) and his camel spin ain't shabby either!

How long has he been training at TCC? I enjoyed the program for 2020 that was posted above. I see a lot of growth from that, to the OIP clip I posted earlier.

Not sure he trains at TCC really. He used to represent Prescott figure skating club... I think it is the same club as Alaine Chartrand. I have no idea who is his current coach.

Now I'd like to celebrate Joshua Farris (USA), a contemporary of Jason Brown. (And I'm summoning @karne and @TontoK). He won US titles on the Juvenile, Intermediate, and Novice levels, silver at Junior Nationals in 2010, and bronze at Senior Nationals in 2015 (a podium of artists: Jason, Adam Rippon, and Josh :love2:). Internationally in Juniors, he won 5 JGPs, medaled twice at the JGPF, and led an American sweep of the podium at 2013 Junior Worlds (Jason Brown won silver behind him). He followed up his bronze at Senior Nationals with a silver at 4CC and an 11th-place finish at Worlds.

*sad stuff* You might look at those accomplishments and wonder why he qualifies for this thread. Well, it's because his Senior international career was so short that if you blinked you missed it, and that wasn't by choice.   He retired the first time in 2016 (age 21), attempted a comeback in 2017, but then chose to retire permanently in January 2018 (age 23). In the summer of 2015, he had 3 concussions in 3 weeks. (He got the first one training a 4T when his feet didn't touch the ice and he landed straight on his elbow and his neck whipped backwards. Scans showed nothing wrong and he didn't grasp the seriousness of concussions, so he came back way too soon and got 2 more concussions). He couldn't skate in the 2015/2016 season, obviously, but beyond that he was just not healthy. (Read more here, here, and here; educational but also sad so be warned). He was healthier by 2017 but the side effects of his TBI persisted so his competitive comeback never got off the ground, though he did get back on the ice and skate. The concussions damaged his 6th cranial nerve and his right eye, and through compensating for the right eye, he herniated his disk between the 6th and 7th cervical spine. He needed to undergo special eye and brain therapy to retrain his brain to use his right side and right eye. He doesn't post updates, so I don't know how well he can see now out of that eye. Anyone know? Oh and he also had other kinds of injuries throughout his career, and he has asthma and a severe dairy allergy. His career was like a yo-yo; the highs were very high and the lows were very low.*sad stuff over*

His career was cut short, but he is an incredible skater, a true artist on the ice with sublime musical interpretation. He now is one of the coaches/choreographers at the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs. For a list of programs he has choreographed, visit https://figure-skating.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Programs_Choreographed_by_Joshua_Farris and click on the music title; then, find his name in the listing to see which skaters/programs he has choreographed (including Camden Pulkinen and Jimmy Ma). Josh also helped choreograph Andrew Torgashev's program for 2020 PFT. Andrew was still training at the Broadmoor then, and he admires Josh a lot so he asked for his help. Andrew was struggling to decide on music and Josh gave him the song suggestion "Put It On Me" by Matt Maeson. It took them about a week to a week and a half to choreograph it. Andrew says they really trusted each other and would bounce ideas back and forth, and their choreographic visions were aligned, and they had fun together. Here is the result:

Here are Josh's iconic programs from 2015 4CC:
SP to "Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran
LP to Schindler's List (my favorite Schindler's List of all time)

Josh had many amazing galas through the years, but in this fancam from 2014 SOI, the camera doesn't move much so you get a real sense of Josh's speed, ice coverage, flow, and the overall beauty of his skating. And I also chose it because Josh does a spread eagle into 3A IN SPOTLIGHTS!
Gala to "To Build a Home" (2014 SOI)

Josh had one of the most beautiful 3As I have ever seen. Here's a closer look at his 3A from 2015 4CC. SIMPLY GORGEOUS!

Let's end with Josh, Jason, and Shataro being ADORABLE after the sweep! How cute is this?!

If you want more Josh loveliness, I cannot recommend highly enough visiting Josh's Fan Fest, at least the first 2 posts, for videos, articles, and info galore (I was pleasantly surprised about how much is still available today).

Thank you, Josh, for sharing your magic with us! You are unforgettable and I'm happy your creativity continues on. :thank:

And even though I made this post, I would LOVE some more current info on him, if anyone has any, though I don't expect much. ;)

Yes, I love Joshua Farris.

I'm a big fan of Edrian Paul Celestino of the Philippines. Really love his flow, artistic interpretation, his skating skills, has a nice knee bend, and really soft landings on his jumps. He doesn't have the big jumps (yet) to break through to the top tier, but if he ever did, he would be very competitive. IMO Celestino is one in a long line of of Filpino mens skaters (after Christopher Caluza and Michael Christian Martinez) who may not have all the technical goods but possess some REALLY lovely artistic skating qualities
How about this one:

I went down a YouTube rabbit hole today and re-discovered Naomi Nari Nam. Golly, she was fun to watch: lots of speed over the ice, wonderful energy (much like Isabeau Levito), and her spins were to die for. She was just 13 when she competed at US Nats in 1999. Check the gorgeous layback around 1:50...and listen to Uncle Dick going nutz for it. ;)

After leaving singles, Naomi also competed in pairs with Themi Leftheris (gotta look him up next). They won bronze at SkateAmerica in 2006 and also at the 2007 US Nats.

I remember watching her all those years ago and thinking that she was going to be the next Michelle. Sadly, it wasn't to be; her career was cut short because of many injuries (tendonitis, bone spurs, torn cartilage -- unreal!) and a big growth spurt.
