Emilea Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoRqbX8GkXg

Emilea finished 17th out of 29 in the SP, with a score of 50.30.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

You know, it's a pity that I can't identify jumps. Because I would like to be able to point out whether Emilea is using the same order that she used at the Ice Challenge last week, or whether she has gone back to the order she was using before that.

The skating today looked good to my untrained eye.

Unfortunately, the judges didn't agree. She goes into last place.

Oh, how I wish the livescoring was working. I'd like to know how far behind 3rd position she is. And I can't wind back the stream to check the graphic, because they have disabled the wind back facility.

But, Emilea has a brilliant Free Skate. So, hopefully she can climb up places with it. Over the past couple of seasons, she has had form in climbing up considerably with her Free Skates. ;)

CaroLiza_fan

Firstly, to answer my own questions, Emilea did keep the same jump order that she used last week in Austria. And she was 0.60 points behind the then-leader, Nathalie WEINZIERL (DEU).

As for this week, she did manage to do the Triple Flip-Double Toe combination. It looked great to me, but according to the protocols, there wasn't a clear edge on the Flip. So, there were a mixture of minuses and zeros from the judges. She didn't have a great landing on her next element, the Triple Lutz, having to resort to a hand down. So, that also produced a mixture of minuses and zeros. And I thought her final jump, the Axel, looked great. But, she actually singled it out, so she got nothing for it.

So, although I thought she only had problems with one jump, she actually had problems with them all.

There are two German skaters directly ahead of Emilea. She is still 0.60 behind Weinzierl, who is now in 16th, and 1.81 points behind Kristina ISAEV, who is in 15th. There is potential to move up some places. Ahead of Isaev, there is a 2 point gap to a group that stretches all the way up to Natasha MCKAY (GBR) in 10th position, who is 6.14 points ahead of Emilea.

Emilea is currently 1.95 points ahead of 18th position, Yelizaveta BABENKO (UKR) The problem is, nearly everybody behind Emilea is in a close group. The girl in penultimate position, Natalia LERKA (POL) is 9.10 points behind Emilea. It could go either way.

So, she will have to put in a good FS to make sure she goes the right direction.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA!!! :cheer:

Marilena Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuflHdvoKRA

Marilena finished 12th out of 29 in the SP, with a score of 54.77.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Such a pit about the fall on the Lutz. Because the rest of it was just exquisite.

I don't know what else I can say. I just love everything about this programme.

9th? NINTH?!

No!

I know she had a fall, but it was better than that!

Even though I'm not a happy bunny with the scoring, Marilena and her coach seemed happy enough.

Now, time to move on and focus on the Free Skate, which I also absolutely love!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

After writing that, @katymay very kindly replied with the following:

She lost alot of levels on spins and StepSeq (2). Easy enough to punch up next time.

Looking at the protocols, Marilena only got one minus, and that was from Judge 7 for the Flying Sit Spin. But, katymay is right in that the judges were mostly giving her zeros, ones and twos for these things.

Marilena is currently the second skater in a very close group of 5 skaters. She is 1.67 points ahead of 10th position, Natasha MCKAY (GBR), and 0.79 points behind 11th position, Gabriella IZZO (USA). She is 0.45 points ahead of 13th position, Niki WORIES (NED), and 0.66 points ahead of 14th position, Alina URUSHADZE (GEO). But, this group is part of a larger group that stretches right the way down to penultimate position. It could go either way.

So, she too will have to put in a good FS to make sure she goes the right direction.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start at 13:00:00 CET (07:00:00 EST / 12:00:00 GMT / 14:00:00 EET). So 6 hours from now.

Emilea will be the 13th skater to start. So, second skater to go in Group 3 (and second skater to go after the first resurfacing).

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 14:45:00 CET (08:45:00 EST / 13:45:00 GMT / 15:45:00 EET). So 7h 45m from now.

Emilea is due to start at 14:58:30 CET (08:58:30 EST / 13:58:30 GMT / 15:58:30 EET). So 7h 58m from now.

Marilena will be the 18th skater to start. So, first skater to go in Group 4.

The Group 4 Warm-Up is due to start at 15:33:30 CET (09:33:30 EST / 14:33:30 GMT / 16:33:30 EET). So 8h 33m from now.

Marilena is due to start at 15:40:00 CET (09:40:00 EST / 14:40:00 GMT / 16:40:00 EET). So 8h 40m from now.

Emilea Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9FD1dewsRE

Emilea finished 13th out of 29 in the FS, with a score of 101.87. This meant that she climbed to 14th place overall, with a score of 152.17.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Mmmm. What can I say?

There were a few very obvious mistakes. And two of them on the one element! In the combination with three parts early on in the programme, she had a stumble before the Half Loop AND after it. Then later on, she had a hand down on one of her individual jumps and shortly afterwards on one of her combination jumps.

But the rest of it was just beautiful.

She goes into 2nd in the FS, but hangs onto the overall lead.

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the protocols, she was actually only called on one of the stumbles I was talking about in the Triple Flip-Half Loop-Double Salchow combination. The one before the Half Loop. And I got the two times she had a hand down the wrong way around. The first was on the Triple Lutz-Double Toe combination, and the second was on the Triple Flip.

It was funny when they came back from the highlights. We had a bit of musical chairs! There were 4 chairs, and Emilea and her coach were sitting on the two chairs on their left / our right. When they saw they were on air, Emilea did a double wave, and her coach waved with his left hand. But, because of where they were sitting, the coach 's arm was outside the camera shot. So, they both got up and moved to the middle 2 chairs, so as to be centre screen.

I was expecting them to wave again, but they didn't. What they did do was laugh and joke with each other. Which was refreshing to see.

Emilea really is the expert when it comes to coming back in the Free Skate after being down the order in the Short Programme.

Emilea finished the Free Skate sandwiched between two Skating Club Of Boston skaters. She was 0.48 points behind 12th position, Marilena KITROMILIS (CYP), and 1.65 ahead of 14th position, Gabriella IZZO (USA). Izzo was actually at the back of a close group of 5 skaters covered by 3.56 points, which stretched up to Natasha MCKAY (GBR) in 10th position, who was 1.91 points ahead of Emilea.

Emilea and Gabriella also occupied the same positions in the overall results, but the other way around. Emilea finished 3.61 points behind 13th position, Gabriella, and 2.37 points ahead of 15th position, Kristina SHKULETA-GROMOVA (EST).

:cheer: WELL DONE EMILEA!!! :cheer:

Marilena Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mv-wXdqp9AI

Marilena finished 12th out of 29 in the FS, with a score of 102.35. This meant that she remained in 12th place overall, with a score of 157.12.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

GAAAH!!!! The stream started buffering in the middle of Marilena!!!!

Not the best of skates from Marilena today, unfortunately.

When things are so close around her, the two falls and the other mistakes are going to be costly.

And she doesn't even have anybody to comfort her, because Gabriella Izzo is also from the Skating Club Of Boston and the coach is with her. 😞

Nevertheless, Marilena goes into 3rd in the FS, and 2nd overall.

A lot better than I thought it would be. I'm delighted!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Marilena finished 5th out of 23 in the SP, with a score of 58.71.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread:

Beautiful. Just beautiful. As always.
Although the camera is quite far away, it looked faultless to me.
I'm not sure I want to admit this, but because I enjoy this programme so much, and because I like Marilena so much, I am actually starting to like that remix used in the second half.
She goes into 2nd place with 58.71 points. Not quite what she scored in Canada, but not too far off. And more than she has scored anywhere else this season.
:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:
And now, off to Budapest to support my third kid (and second son) of the day.

After a month's break over the Christmas and New Year period, we are now entering a very busy couple of weeks for the Cypriot team.

As you all probably know by now, Marilena Kitromilis has the honour of becoming the first skater to represent Cyprus at the European Championships this week. But, hot on the heels of this, the Junior skaters from Cyprus will be in action in Oberstdorf next week at the Bavarian Open.

  • Stefania Yakovleva will be competing in Junior Ladies.
  • Angelina Kudryavtseva / Ilia Karankevich will be competing in Junior Ice Dance.
  • Sofía Val / Nikita Vitryanyuk will be competing in Junior Ice Dance (albeit representing Spain).

Getting back to Europeans, and the Senior Ladies SP is due to start at 11:52:00 EET (04:52:00 EST / 09:52:00 GMT). So 4 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 12th skater to start. So, sixth and last skater in Group 2 (and last skater to go before the first ice resurfacing).

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 12:37:30 EET (05:37:30 EST / 10:37:30 GMT). So 4h 45m from now.

Marilena is due to start at 13:16:40 EET (06:16:40 EST / 11:16:40 GMT). So 5h 24m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Marilena finished 32nd out of 36 in the SP, with a score of 44.03.

Unfortunately, that means that she she did not qualify for the Free Skate.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread as she was bveing introduced:

Now for the last of my kids in this competition.

I know this is a big occasion with it being the first European Championships for both you and your country. But please don't let it get to you. Please be as beautiful as you have been so far this season.

Leave the nerves to me! ;)

:cheer: ALL THE BEST MARILENA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

And here is what I wrote after she skated:

I always worry about Marilena, because the nerves do tend to get to her when she is in pressure situations. But, I don't think this is what happened this time. I think she was just unfortunate today.

As you all know, I am rather old fashioned. Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" is one of my all-time favourite pieces of music, and I normally hate techno versions of classical pieces.

But, this time, I was glad when the techno section kicked in. Because it really got Marilena going after the disasterous start.

Of course, I'm biased on this occasion, but it really angers me that Single jumps score absolutely nothing in Senior skating. Marilena's Single Axel was beautiful! Surely, it deserved something!

And then the fall on the Triple Lutz really messed things up for her. In a way, it was good that the picture broke up, so we didn't see the fall.

The rest of it was beautiful. But, the start was too costly.

She goes into 8th place. And with 24 still to go and only 24 going through to the FS, it looks like a premature end to her European Championships. Which is a pity, because her FS programme is beautiful too.

So sad for her.

But, now all you can do is look forward. And I am sure things will go better next time.

CaroLiza_fan

There was a resurfacing on after Marilena, so I had time to write a more detailed comment than I normally do.

I have been watching the World Feed coverage of the European Championships on the ISU YouTube Channel. But, since I had time during that resurfacing, I decided to go back and watch Marilena again with the British Eurosport commentators, 1981 British Men's Champion Chris Howarth and 2011 British Ice Dance Champion Louise Walden. And they actually had an interesting discussion about what it is like to be the last to skate in a group of 6, and all the waiting around with your boots on. And they were being very supportive of Marilena.

Looking at the protocols, they support my initial assessment. The first two elements were what cost her. Everything else was good, although the Flying Sit Spin got -0.15 GOE and the Judges marks ranged from 0 to -3. And I can't understand why because, even watching it again there now after reading the protocols, it looked alright to me.

Marilena finished up 1.48 points behind 31st position, Linnea KILSAND (NOR), and 0.47 points ahead 33rd position, Alexandra Michaela FILCOVA (SVK).

The debut European Championship appearance for Marilena and for Cyprus may not have ended the way we wanted it to. But, we have to remember: this is only Marilena's second season competing internationally; and only her second season competing at Senior level; and only her second season out of Novice level.

Because of her amazing win at the Autumn Classic, it is easy to forget that she is still relatively inexperienced. Unlike practically all the other skaters in this field, Marilena did not have the benefit of doing the Junior GP Series, and learning about competing internationally there. She did it the hard way, going from Novice competitions in America straight to international Senior competitions.

Although this week was disappointing, it is an experience that she can learn from, and build on. And, ultimately, that will make her a better competitor in the long run.

So, here's looking forward to the next time we see her in action!

Typical! I don't check the website of the Cyprus Mail newspaper for a couple of days, and I miss an interview with Marilena! :bang:

It was in Saturday's edition.

https://cyprus-mail.com/2022/02/05/...is-figure-skater-on-the-cyprus-national-team/

What a lovely interview!

As somebody who has lost touch with what is popular in the modern world, I have to admit that I have never heard tell of the book, the poet or the singers that she mentioned. But, I just listened to the two songs, and I really liked them both! (Of course I do - they're incredibly beautiful Korean girls with nice singing voices! )

I had to laugh, though, at the "What would you say to your 18-year-old self?" question. She's 17!

As you probably worked out, these are a standard set of questions that a different person answers each week. And this question is designed for somebody who is a lot older than Marilena. Somebody who is able to look back on what they have done in their life with the benefit of hindsight, and advise their younger self on how to approach things differently. Or not, as the case may be.

It is so good to see that Marilena's success is making the mainstream media take an interest in figure skating. In all the years I've been reading the Cyprus Mail, I don't think I've ever seen a figure skating story in it before.

Just saw a post in the Retirements, Splits & Partner Changes thread (of all places!), and the Instagram post it links to says that Marilena will be one of the skaters performing in a special Exhibition show on Saturday that the Skating Club Of Boston is putting on to mark the 150th anniversary of the town of Norwood, where the club is based.

Marilena finished 30th out of 33 in the SP, with a score of 53.32.

Here is what I wrote in the competition thread at the time:

Oh boys, but that was great at the start!!!

But then she singled out her Flip. :bang: :bang: :bang:

Thankfully, that was the only blip. It was great again after that.

I love "Moonlight Sonata" (much prefer the original, though). And I love this programme. And, oh boys, but I love Marilena and her skating!

I'm going to pretend that the flip didn't exist, and say that this was a faultless programme!

But, unfortunately, it did. She goes into 8th out of 10.

Chris said that she could have been leading except for that flip.

But, hey. She's still young, and still only in her second season in Seniors (and second season out of Novices!)

So, with all that in mind...

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

CaroLiza_fan

Looking at the Protocols, and seeing the Judges marks, it is even more heartbreaking that the Flip was invalidated. The only element that got any minuses was the Flying Sit Spin that she did after the Flip. It had -0.13 in GOE, and the Judges marks were one -2; three -1's; and five 0's. All the GOE's were positive and all the marks the Judges gave for the other elements were either neutral or positive.

Marilena is currently 0.98 points behind 29th position, Lea SERNA (FRA), and 5.39 points ahead of 31st position, Júlia LÁNG (HUN). Marilena is at the back of a much larger group that stretches all the way up to Lindsay van ZUNDERT (NED) in 18th position, 5.17 points ahead of Marilena. The final skater to qualify for the Free Skate, Natasha McKAY (GBR), in 24th position was 2.39 points ahead of Marilena.

It should be noted that the base value for a Triple Flip is 5.83 points. So, if that jump had went to plan, Marilena could have been in or around the top of the group. If it had been downgraded to a Double Flip, the base value of 1.98 points would not have been enough to put her through to the Free skate on it's own. It would have depended on the GOE and Judges marks.

Nevertheless, if you pretend that the flip was never supposed to be there, it was a VERY good skate for Marilena. So...

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The provisional entry lists for the Senior GP Series have been released, and Cyprus will be represented for the first time.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

Marilena will be making her GP debut in Skate America, at her home rink in Norwood, Massachusettes.

Hopefully skating in very familiar surroundings will give her a boost.

If I am correct, Marilena is the only Skating Club Of Boston club member competing in the Ladies category. That said, there is one slot that is still to be announced, so hopefully that will go to one of her club-mates.

Can't wait!!!

For those that did not realise, the Team Cyprus thread was given an overhaul last month on the anniversary of Cyprus gaining it's independence. And as part of that overhaul, all the posts about Marilena were moved out into this new thread specifically about her.

Earlier in the summer, it was announced that Skate America would be held in Norwood, Massachusettes. And as soon as it was announced, I started hoping that Marilena would get one of the slots. After all, where better to make your Senior GP debut than at your home rink? Well, I am very pleased to say that when the Senior GP entries were announced, my wishes were confirmed. Marilena will indeed be making her Senior GP debut at Skate America.

What's more, if they keep to the provisional schedule in the Announcement PDF, she will be making her debut on my birthday!!! (And exactly a week after her own birthday).

Can't wait!!!

But, that's all more than a month away. In the meantime, she will be making her season debut tonight at the opening Challenger event of the season, the US Classic, which is being held in Lake Placid.

The Senior Ladies SP is due to start at 15:50:00 EDT (19:50:00 GMT / 20:50:00 BST / 22:50:00 EEST). So 12 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 12th skater to start. So, third and middle skater to go in the Group 3 (third to go after the resurfacing / antepenultimate skater to go in the competition).

The Group 3 Warm-Up is due to start at 17:16:30 EDT (21:16:30 GMT / 22:16:30 BST / 00:16:30 EEST). So 14h 26m from now.

Marilena is due to start at 17:36:00 EDT (21:36:00 GMT / 22:36:00 BST / 00:36:00 EEST). So 14h 46m from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

US Classic Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

No video uploaded yet 😞

Marilena finished 7th out of 13 in the SP, with a score of 52.55.

Unfortunately, the livestreaming of the US Classic was on Peacock, and we in the British Isles only get a cut-down version that only has films and drama series on it. So this analysis is based purely on the protocols.

Marilena started her programme with a Double Axel and it generally produced a positive response (there were 0's from two of the Judges, but everything else was positive).

Her second element was a Triple Lutz-Triple Toe combination, but the second part was under-rotated. Consequently, she got a unanimous -2 from the Judges, and -1.18 in GOE. This was to prove the most costly of her elements.

The third element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, produced a similar response to the opening Axel. However, the Triple Flip that followed didn't have a clear edge. The result was that it got -1.06 in GOE, and a wide range of negative marks from the Judges. Judge 3 gave it -4; Judge 6 gave it -3; three Judges gave it -2 and two Judges gave it -1! On the plus side, she did get extra credit for doing it in the second half of the programme.

The Step Sequence also produced negative GOE, but it was only -0.10. As for the Judges, their marks ranged from -1 to +1. So, it wasn't too major.

The final two elements, the Flying Sit Spin and the Layback Spin, both produced similar responses. In each case, one Judge gave -1 (not the same Judge), and the rest gave marks ranging from 0 to +2. They also both got positive GOE.

Marilena is currently 5.38 points behind 6th position, Sonja HILMER (USA), and 3.49 points ahead of 8th position, Alessia TORNAGHI (ITA). The Top 6 are actually a close group, with the leader, YOU Young (KOR), being 5.26 points ahead of Hilmer.

Being realistic, it is a big ask for Marilena to infiltrate this leading group. However, if Marilena has a good Free Skate and any of the Top 6 have a poor Free Skate, she is well poised to pick them off. So, there is a chance that she could end up in the Top 5 overall.

Fingers crossed that she does have a good FS!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start at 19:00:00 EDT (23:00:00 GMT Thursday / 00:00:00 BST Friday / 02:00:00 EEST Friday). So 18 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 7th skater to start. So, third skater to go in Group 2 (and penultimate skater to go before the resurfacing.

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 19:37:50 EDT (23:37:50 GMT Thursday / 00:37:50 BST Friday / 02:37:50 EEST Friday). So 18h 37m from now.

Marilena is due to start at 20:00:00 EDT (00:00:00 GMT Friday / 01:00:00 BST Friday / 03:00:00 EEST Friday). So 19 hours from now.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Marilena finished 11th out of 13 in the FS, with a score of 77.09. This meant that she dropped to 9th place overall, with a score of 129.64.

Again, I was not able to watch the competition (even if it had been available, the segment started at midnight my time, with Marilena skating at 1am), so this analysis is based on the Protocols.

The opening Double Axel went fine, with everything being on the positive side of the scale. However, the same can't be said for the Triple Lutz that followed. I don't know what went wrong. All I know is that she didn't fall. But, whatever happened, it must not have been pretty, because she got -2.83 in GOE, and five of the Judges gave her -5, and the other two gave her -4.

The next 2 elements, the Double Loop and the Choreographic Sequence, seemed to go alright, as there were no minuses. The Triple Flip got -0.32 in GOE and -1 from four of the Judges. But, it also got +2 from Judge 2, so it mustn't have been all that bad. The Flying Change Foot Combination Spin was a mixture too, getting +0.12 in GOE and +1 from four of the Judges, but also getting -2 from Judge 4.

Unfortunately, Marilena fell on her second Double Axel, getting -1.32 in GOE and unanimous -5's. It was also under-rotated. Although she didn't fall on the Double Flip that followed, it mustn't have gone too well as it was also minuses all round. GOE of -0.61, along with -3 from four Judges, -4 from two Judges, and -5 from Judge 2. However, both these jumps got extra credit for being in the second half of the programme, as did the next jump, the Double Lutz, which got a completely neutral response in terms of both GOE and Judges' marks.

The next two elements, the Flying Sit Spin and the Step Sequence, went fine. But something must have went wrong with the final element, the Change Foot Combination Spin because, apart from a 0 from Judge 3, everything was negative: three -1's, two -2's, one -3, and -0.27 in GOE.

Marilena finished the FS 1.18 points behind 10th position, Sofia Lexi Jacqueline FRANK (PHL), and 9.50 points ahead of 12th position, Victoria ALCANTARA (AUS).

Overall, Marilena was 3.84 points behind 8th position, Alessia TORNAGHI (ITA), and 0.49 points ahead of 10th position, ELIŠKA BŘEZINOVÁ (CZE).

Although this is not the result Marilena would have been looking, you have to keep in mind that it is her first competition of the season. At this stage of the year, positions aren't important. The main thing is getting used to your programmes and trying to set a base line from which you can improve as the season goes on.

And I am sure she will do just that!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

All being well, seven days from now I will be celebrating the end of my birthday by watching Marilena make her Senior GP debut on home ice.

But, with a week to go until the SP, it is Marilena's turn to celebrate. Because today is her 18th birthday!!!

I hope she has an enjoyable day, and that the coming year is a good one, both on and off the ice.

And I hope that her first 10 days as an adult conclude with a great weekend of competing in Skate America.

Can't wait to see her in action for the first time this season!!!

Marilena was interviewed by Fox25, a Boston station.

Although I have read interviews with her before, the only videos I have seen of Marilena are of her skating. So, I'd love to see what she is like off-ice, and actually hear her speaking.

Do you know if it is available anywhere? I found the station's website, but it is one of those websites where it is hard to get to anything that is more than a few hours old.

And I thought the BBC News website was hard to use since it was given a revamp a few years ago... :rolleye:
