I think this format is a great idea. Another event to practice your routine.....why is this bad? "Phone-a-vote" shows are extremely popular now, so I say, go for it. Boycotting this event by the skaters would be "poor form" in my opinion.....42

What's really bad about this is the timing. Figure skating has never been accepted as a sport and it will not be, after a silly format like this one, just before the Olympics- the most serious sports event.

I remember that pro competition, too. I think it was Skates of GOld type compeititon. I just remember that Scott Hamilton won because of the entertainment factor of his program, while skaters like Boitano, Browning and Petrenko had beautiful routines with high technical content. I think Kristi won the ladies' portion.

This definitely won't improve the perception of skating as a sport. What other sport allows the public to select the winner?

In the Skates of Gold there were real judges, IIRC. They awarded high marks to Scott in the artistic program because of the entertainment factor.

However, there was another competition around that time where the audience punched in scores for each skater. Yuka Sato and Scott Hamilton won that one.

Just to clarify: Skates of Gold was an exhibition featuring many past Olympic champions, held in Lake Placid in 1994. The pro competition featuring a few invited Olympic champions was called "The Gold Championships".

The original competition that featured audience voting was called the "People's Choice", and was held in Green Bay, Wisconson. For that reason, it was promptly nicknamed the "Cheesehead's Choice". Around the same time, Brian Boitano gave an interview in which he complained about the "cheesy" pro competitions some of the other skaters were doing..... and before long, the name "cheesefest" started to be stuck on any pro-type or made-for-TV competition.

I was wondering, if Sasha and Michelle does not skate in any assignment, and then skates in Marshalls, will there be any reprecussions from ISU or anybody for skating in the Skating Idol.

I read somewhere that the rules governing the GP series for this years states only that skaters who opt out from the outset (as Michelle did last season) face sanctions if they do other shows or competitions during the GP period. The rules didn't say anything about sanctions against skaters who have to drop out of the GP because of injury. I would think that where a skater claims "injury", but does a show or cheesefest very close in time to the scheduled GP event (like Plushy last season, dropping out of NHK, but scheduled to do a show on the same night as NHK) faces problems because the ISU will think that the claim of Injury is false. When there is a big time interval between the originally scheduled GP event and the show/cheesefest, this shouldn't be an issue.

IMO, there shouldn't be trouble if Michelle wasn't well enough to do an event in early November, but is well enough to do an event a month later -- especially since it is the ISU rules that prohibt "event switching", which would have allowed Michelle do do one of the later GP events.
