Melissa and Denis in COI

that's also why SOI was born...
:agree:

unfortunately they are becoming just as gimmicky as the Ice Capades... amazing what 8 years will do...

I can't really agree with the "unfortunately" comment, but do feel the lack of Ice Capades yet still having an audience that love it is why we see a little of this element of entertainment in COI. ??? I love a "taste" once and awhile. Throw In the Fantastic skating that is more "true to the sport," and you have one "darn" nice show! IMO

I've never been a Champs on Ice fan. Somewhat because of Tom Collins' reputation (see Kurt's autobiography lol) and somewhat due to the fact that it is SOI's competition... but just because it doesn't feel as fun.

Granted I've yet to see either show live... but I like the playfulness and the fun and the great skating of SOI over that of Champions On Ice... I dunno... 'back in the day' it was Boitano's show vs Hamilton's show... now it's like
'the pro show' vs the 'olympic eligible show' and since the pros get little to no airtime anymore I guess that makes SOI just that much more special

that and it's Scott's show lol

Irina Grigorian rules!

!

Ok. I was totally prepared to hate the 'hulla hoop girl' and I admit, the first act, that was in a wheel that reminded me of something in a girble cage, wasn't my favorite - but oh my, what she does with hulla hoops is totally amazing. I loved it.

So, Melissa, Denis and Weir were outstanding - that 'fallen angels' program is so spectacular; just powerful and smoothe and interesting. I loved it. I couldn't gage the audience reaction - seemed like no one knew who Denis and Melissa were - but I clapped as loud as i could.

I also was prepared to not love Shae Lynne skating with a chair ...UNTIL I saw it and oh my god, is that a spectacular program or what??!!!!

I think Shizuka is amazing - so smoothe with such soft yet strong skating. It was great to finally see Plushy live, but I have to admit, not as great as I imagined it would be. Weir's solo was, for me, the very best of the men. And I must say, Kimmie's arms looked great with the flowy sleeves she had on. I have decided that she needs to stop rushing some of her moves - and the spiral really needs work. Other than that, I really loved watching her. Sasha - beautiful, but last night, Arakawa was, for me, the superior skater.

Anyway, my thoughts are all scattered as this was my first live show - it was really, really fun.

Thanks for the mini report emma!!!!! There's nothing like that 'first live show' experience! :)

The "trio" will be performing "Fallen Angels" this weekend in New Jersey, Long Island, and Providence.

I saw the Detroit show. Melissa, Denis and Weir were so beautiful! That number and Shae Lynne's were the best of the night. I liked Johnny's first number to "All in Love is Fair." He really is just a gorgeous skater. Pang and Tong were good too. Otherwise, I was not very impressed with the show.

Irina G's second number might have some entertainment value, but her first number was so lame it was embarassing. She climbed into this big hoop and basically rolled back and forth slowly to music. The audience response was no more than polite. Actually, it may have been a bit less than polite.

Plushenko was flapping his heart out. My daughter and I were trying to figure out what music he was actually skating to because it couldn't have been the music we were hearing. It just didn't mesh.

I was there too and totally agree with all you wrote - I was so looking forward to my 'first' with Plushenko live, but it really was udnerwhelming and a bit wierd (in the way you say - also, he was missing jumps which just made it worse). The rolling in the big hoop thing was just plain boring and wierd - at first I thought, hmm, this could get interesting - but it didn't.

Anyway, the tango, the fallen angels, and Weir were just great. I did also like Shizuka a lot, although I admit, I forget what song she skated too so I guess the music didn't make much of an impression on me.

What did you think of Kimmie? I thought her arms looked great in the long sleeves - i say this after all the commentary on her arms need work - but I do think her spiral just really, really needs work; it is too jerky and her shoulders seem tight and not squared and relaxed.

Also - what did you think of the final group act? I found it hard to follow and the big white things on the ice blocked my view at some points.

I was more impressed with Kimmie live than on tv. I agree that she needs more polish on many moves, but she seems to have made a great deal of progress. She's still young, so in a few years she might really come into her own.

Shizuka was beautiful, but I can't remember the music either. It seemed that she and Kimmie skated to generic pretty numbers that really didn't have a lot of personality.

My younger daughter became ill and so I left just as they were pulling those white columns out. I have to say that leaving early wasn't a hardship for me. I am glad that I got the chance to see some of these skaters, but overall it wasn't as good as I had expected.

This was my first time going to COI. I think I'll try it again next year. If it's not improved, I'll stick to SOI.

Well I am back from the Detroit show with a few impressions! Hopefully I won't forget anything.

My favourites of the night were Shizuka and oddly enough, Victor. Shiz treated us to her awesome Ina Bauer no less than three times over the course of the evening. I had never seen Victor skate before. Ever. I have just read about him. He did a kind of cowboy number complete with hat and vest, and he reminded me very much of Kurt Browning. That is a big compliment!

Ryan Bradley. - meh.

Tanith and Ben were good. I am not normally a big fan but it was great to see them just having fun out there. Tanith is cute, but boy is she thin.

To echo a previous poster, Plushenko was just plain bizarre. Just like at the Olympics, he skated to a slower song but decided to flap his way around the rink like a maniac. I just don't understand him. I almost feel stupid watching him because he is obviously getting something from the music that I just don't "get". It didn't help that he also popped both of what were probably meant to be triple axels.

Surya was her usual energetic self. I could watch her do her back flip (landed on one foot of course!) all day long. She wore her usual flamboyant dresses as well. No surprises here.

Kimmie was ok. A bit boring IMO but I still admire her. From what I remember her arms looked better in the first outfit she wore because the frilly things trailing off of it helped "disguise" the problem.

Pang and Tong were nice to see, but they weren't at their best. Their twist was nice and airy, but she couldn't hold the landing on one of their throws and plunked down pretty hard.

For her first act Irina Grigorian did a bizarre catwoman thing on what looked to be a giant hamster wheel. Weird. Her second act was better. I am impressed by anyone that can skate and work about 20 hula hoops. Then again I have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time so maybe I am easy to impress :p

Sasha is one of my favourites and although she missed one of her jumps she was great to watch. I actually managed to get a good picture of her doing her Charlotte. If I wasn't a technical ignoramus I could post it here.

Although not a fan, I enjoyed Evan. He skated to INXS which was good, and he seemed to be one of the very few skaters who was actually "on".

Johnny was good to watch. Oh so smooth. I must admit that I really wasn't into the number he did with Melissa and Denis. Too strange for me I guess? Not sure.

Rudy was fun to watch. He gave his usual performance and the young girl sitting behind me just about pierced my eardrums with her scream!

Could have done without the silly Dan Hollander superhero routine. Maybe it's just me.

Polishchuk and Besedin were great to watch but I am used to seeing a longer routine out of them. I guess when you have to fit in a lot of skaters you have to keep it short.

Shae Lynn was good but I have seen this routine a few times before so I wasn't as impressed as the first time around. Still interesting though.

Final observations:

From what I could tell, Joe Louis Arena was probably about one third full meaning there was around 7000 in attendance. Besides the girl behind me the crowd was pretty quiet. I don't know what the show is lacking but it needs to amp up the excitement level a little bit. This was only the second show I have seen without Kurt Browning and I really missed his presence! I have seen a Marshall's cheesefest (also in Detroit), CSOI as well as Canadian Celebration On Ice about 5 times each, as well as a few of Kurt's Gotta Skate's as well. Unfortunately I would have to rank this COI near the bottom of the pile. I found the quality of skating to be on the low side (yes I understand it's an exhibition), and the show to be poorly paced (pretty backloaded) My girlfriend liked it slightly more than I did but generally agreed with my assessment. I'm not sure we would make the 4 hour trip again the way it stands.

Thanks for the review, I laughed my butt off on a couple of comments:agree:

And I - and am sure others - would be more than happy walking you though the steps in getting pictures up. Most would love to see them. Just ask and you got it. :agree:

A/p

Hey I wanted olny to ask how Anissina-Peizerat skated??? Were they there? Thanks;)

Has anyone heard if Melissa and Denis are going to do any more shows after these three? Specifically the on in Columbus next Saturday? :)
