Melissa and Denis in COI

most excellent! :) good to hear! ;)

if only the Portland stop wasn't right before my vacation I'd be snatching up plane fare right now!

I'm glad that they got added to the entire tour because they are WONDERFUL. Fallen Angels lived up to the hype for sure. I'd post more but I'm beyond dead tired right now and I really need to get some sleep. Discoduck and I will post reviews of the show tomorrow sometime. Yay for Melissa & Denis!!

Impressions from Columbus:

-They should rename it "Albinoni On Ice Starring Christina Aguilera"
-Heather and I were disturbed over Surya's costume in the opening. It looked like someone killed Big Bird and pasted his feathers on her bum.
-Ryan Bradley's number was fun. I was singing along and since we were lucky enough to score some front row seats that no one was sitting in, he noticed it and mentioned it to me backstage.
-I'm happy to report that Surya was not wearing dead Muppets in her solo number.
-Johnny's number is gorgeous! I hope he can find the joy he's showing on tour for the upcoming season.
-Tanith needs more clothes but at least she's back to shorts and not her underwear. I wasn't a fan of the hooker boot covers though.
-I don't know how Dan Hollander skates in all those costumes one on top of another.
-Rudy still rocks. Loved his number and he actually looked great in the sequin catsuit.
-I lurves me some Victor but Shae and the chair make a great team. She is amazing live. She doesn't have jumps but when you can move like that, who needs 'em?
-At the end of Evan's number I wanted to stand up and say "I'm sorry Evan but you're just not right for our band INXS"
-Fallen Angels is amazing! I am so glad that I got to see it. Denis has a real future in choreography if this is any indication of what he can do.
-Pang and Tong are much more impressive live than on TV. Heather and I were happy to see that the headband made an appearance for their number but we wuz robbed of it backstage. :
-Marina Anissina nearly fell out of her dress right in front of us when Gwendal lifted her. Brings new meaning to the term "Big Red" if you know what I mean.
-Sarah Kawahara needs to watch a few more Bond movies because the last time I checked, Pink Panther was not in any of them.
-There is too much going on in the closing to even comment on. It was better than last year's hot mess of a finale though IMHO.
-We were lucky enough to be backstage after the show and everyone we talked to was very nice. Johnny was an absolute doll as was Ryan Bradley. I also have to say that while I am still not an Evan fan, he does get points for being nice to the duckling when she dropped her sharpie over the barrier. My biggest thrill that I finally got to meet Shae after being a fan since 1993.

I think that's everything. Heather...feel free to add anything that I missed. All in all, it was a great show. I was pleasantly surprised.

Evan gets no love from you *sobs* ;) lol

love this abridged version of your report ;) and I'm still jealous (in a good way)

Chicago reviews
Large crowd.
The show was OK. The choreography and especially the closing, need work.:disagree:

-Sasha, and the trio of Denis, Melissa and Johnny were out of this world. I want to see more of them...
-Alissa did a great job. No Double Axel, but she did nice triples and good spins and spiral.
-Marina Anissina needs to train harder. I was reaaaally disappointed.:disagree:
- Pang and Tong, good forgettable skating, and the only fall of the night.:disagree:
- Rudy and Victor, amazing. They are the real thing, no matter how many years have past since their prime.
-Shae, amazing skating from an amazing skater.
-Tanith, disappointed me.:disagree:
-Ryan Bradley, needs to learn the basics, like skating..:disagree:
-Evan, just OK. Nothing special:disagree:
-Johnny, absolute perfection.
-Did I say Sasha was breath taking? What a great skater she is.
It's funny to watch her superior skating compare to that of Kimmie's. They had a number doing exactly the same moves. If i was Kimmie's coach or manager, I will ask to change that number. It's makes Kimmie's luck of basic skating skills obvious, or should I say emphasizes Sasha's superiority?

-Dennis and Melissa  . I can't say enough about those two. The only thing i can say, is how lucky I am to be there and to watch that program. Johnny compliments their skating so well. That's what skating is all about. I only hope they will continue with their amature carrier, and the judges will start giving them what it's theirs.

I dont remember in the previous shows, If the new kids on the block were so far behind in skating skills. What is going on this year?
Kimmie, bless her heart is Ok , but how can I compare her to Sasha, Michelle, Nicole, Tara, Kristie, Jill etc..

The same goes for our male Champion.

I am very discouraged as a fan.

Why they did not include one American pair team?

Toni, I gave him points for being nice to the duckling! ;) That's the highest compliment I can pay him after all. Still don't like his skating but he was nice to her so I can give him that much.

On his myspace blog Johnny said something about being asked to help choreograph a new number for the closing segment. I probably won't happen but, it atleast shows that COI knows the closing number isn't that good.

Oops nevermind I totally misread it.

Hmmmm... wasn't he saying that he was asked to do a new "more upbeat" solo number for himself?

My 2 1/2 year old grand daughter's favorites were Rudy Galindo; she laughed all the way through his number! And Viktor Petrenko with the cowboy hat; she loved him too! Otherwise she was bored.

well that *IS* something.... :)

As an aside, given the talk of Johnny Weir's legendary ability to direct attention to himself, I was quite impressed by his generous presence in the finale. He was the consummate cast member - staying in character, while directing his stage energy to the feature skater.

Indeed, at one point, it almost seemed as though he was encouraging Kimmie to be more [Bond Girlish in her presentation. Perhaps he is teaching her the ways of being a seductress on skates. If you haven't seen the show yet, keep an eye on him while he sways by the geometric shape and Kimmie is doing her "number." See what you think.

Sorry, gotta disagree with you here! The only "basic skating skills" where Sasha would beat Kimmie is spirals and spin positions. The rest of Sasha's basic ckating leaves a lot to be desired. Her stroking is a nightmare and is so much weaker than most other elite athletes, her edges are weak, she just blinds people with her flexibility IHO. Kimmie OTOH may not have outstanding spins and spirals but they are more than adequate, and the rest of her skating is very good. She definitely has better control of her blades than Sasha does. Kimmie could hold her self up taller when she is doing her crossovers, but at all other times her posture is excellent. So I'm guessing that in the part where Sasha and Kimmie are doing the same moves, they must be doing spins or spirals?

Let's agree to disagree. Sasha and Kimmie skating side by side, are like David and Goliath.
Sasha is not just a superior spinner, but her positions are incredible, and especially this year her stroking is great. Also her arms don't look like she is ready to fly. Sorry. I can't even compare the two.JMHO

I'll agree to disagree because I will always believe that Sasha's basic skating skills are sorely lacking. And, Kimmie is the one with the World Gold so in my eyes, she's the better skater. And she's not a head case under pressure...

Not a fair comparison, Sasha versus Kimmie, at this stage in their careers. A pro versus an amateur.

Seems kind of fair to me, I might be wrong but... Sash is a better spinner and Kimmie is a better Jumper...???eta ;)

I see what you are saying. But she also a world champion and a National champion. So it is more than fair to make that comparison. I think.

To me, it's apples and oranges. At COI the skaters' job is to entertain the audience. Sasha is very good at it.

Maybe not quite so good as the even more experienced pros, like Rudy Galindo and Viktor Petrenko (see Pennyfromheaven's post, #71 above, LOL). Not so good as the acrobats and the hula hoop girl. :)

But in contrast, youngsters like Kimmie are still finding their way. Their exhibition programs are really just watered down versions of what they might skate in competition.

JMO, of course.
