Men's Short Program.. Tuesday 16th, 7:15PM EST

Jeremy just can't hang with the big dogs. Thank god for Evan Lysacek. This is why a good competitor is always better than someone who has "artistry" but can't put it together when it counts.

But Jeremy could in Nationals! Well, maybe those (Nats) dogs weren't big.

I respectfully disagree with the 'always better' part. I can see how it's better for a country's medal count, but I don't see what's in it for the fans of a certain skater/ certain skating style.

Oh, and it may be an "artistry" in Evan's case, but it's artistry in Jeremy's.

His only threat at Nationals was Evan. Evan said earlier that he's just doing Nationals for the sake of doing Nationals. Just like Miki at the Japanese nationals. In this competition, there are Nobunari, Daisuke, Stephane, Plushenko. You need a nerve of steel to compete with the big dogs.
Say what you will about Evan, he will throw it down. I believe Rachael Flatt will do the same. Go team USA.

Well, it's not like Evan could skip Nationals for no reason whatsoever either...

And is it too hard to not bring up Rachael (or any female skaters) in a thread that's supposed to be for the men's short program? Kthanks.

I used to love Plushenko's programs back at the 02 Olympics. Now I simply can't stand them. Is it too much to ask to have dance and choreography that actually go with the music?

Everything about Plushenko's skating is worse than it used to be. Especially in terms of his artistry. He doesn't have excitement in his performance anymore, he skates slow, and his edging isn't even that good.

This is one of the only guys to have received a Level 4 in footwork. His footwork now is tentative and boring.

And his spin positions? I'm sorry, but so bad. They shouldn't count as a level feature to gain points. That awful attempt at a cannonball position he does multiple times in his program...oh GOD.

The only thing going for him now is that he can jump. In the past, people who could only jump were marked down.

I'm inclined to think you're right. Both are great competitors, even though I find them lacking in the artistry department.

HOLY MOLY is this a repeat of Torino Ladies? Not even a point separating the top 3! Gratz to the top 3 for really bringing it - Well done Plushy, Dai and Evan!

I'd say nothing is set in stone. Pang/Tong were a couple of points behind the top three when they came out roaring in the FS and delivered when everyone else faltered. It's FS and under COP, anything could happen (God help us that we don't see another splatfest a la Pairs LP). I think everyone from 1 - 7 is a potential medal contender.

Oh Jeremy, Joubert and Verner .... What happened?

Here's wishing everyone good luck for the FS and a great night of skating!

Does anyone know if there's a torrent or Chinese site (off to hunt on tudou now) which hosts the SPs? I could only follow the results since I was in school. ):

I also disagree with the "always better" part. I think this Olympic experience will only make Jeremy stronger in the future, just like it did for Evan when he had that diastorous short program in Torino. He may not be better TODAY, but that doesn't mean he's doom to fail for the rest of his career. I don't think Yuka Sato would allow it either :)

Poor Jeremy

To add insult to injury I got the pleasure of doing doping after my extraordinarily beautiful performance tonight! YAY! lol :( Thank U all 4 UR love & support! I love sharing my sk8ing & joy w/ you all! Im only sorry 2night I had 2 share my disappointment and regret! I promise with all my heart that there will be a reason to smile on thursday! My goals are out of reach, but my Olympics is not over yet!

Johnny was undescored!!!

His skating is similar in terms of artistic interpretation, movement and line to Oksana back in the black swan days (same coach).

Plushenko is unafraid to say what he thinks, and I like that. Although, he may be forced to be more politically correct (i.e. boring and 'safe') in the future, based on what took place after he said judges have a way of placing people they want high. Isn't that really the case? isn't that the truth?
Judges CAN manipulate the PCS, just as they did before.
He should have been placed higher. Some judges may have been influenced by all the bad press he has gotten in N. America.
I've been around for several Olympics as a fan, and I don't remember such a distinctly "Cold War" feel in any earlier ones, even w/Soviet judges... Too bad...

Too bad about anonymous judging too... I just had to vent. Tonight was a gorgeous and well-skated event, but the politics surrounding it, and all the biased commentating (and words of athletes themselves against one another) just make me sad.

This is why I like the guy. Even when he has the worst perfromance ever, he still willing to reach out to fans. And I think this comment shows true Olympic spirit. Now he has to go and kick some butt in the LP!

Jeremy Abbott

Abbott couldn't complete a triple axel or a triple lutz. Still, he promised not to pack it in despite having little shot at a high placement.

"I'm going to have to do a lot of digging in the next two days, because I'm not going to give up," he said. "I'm not going to leave it here. I'm not going to leave my games on that experience."

And ...

(Johnny) Weir isn't concerned about challenging Plushenko. He didn't consider himself a medals possibility when he arrived in Vancouver, even though he's won three U.S. titles and, as recently as 2008, took world bronze.

"I actually had fun tonight, and that's something I haven't been able to say for a long time," said Weir, who quit for a few weeks last spring after bombing so badly at the U.S. championships he failed to make the world team. "I felt like I really showed my heart."

Remind me of ...

The Olympic Creed:
"The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

I really so hope they go out and have fun (and do well, of course).

Stéphane Lambiel is rightly the winner of the Program Components. 9.15 for interpretation is great. I wish he had Plushenko's jumps or Plushenko had his ...other everything. Now it's even more interesting to remember Yagudin had both the jumps and the "other everything".Well, not spins. Whatever.
I think the judging was fair.
I see it's mentioned a couple of times that Lambiel is held-up. Seriously?
It's written what he got for his jumps, 4.70 for double axel, 9.18 for quad-toe double-toe and 5.70 for the triple flip. I don't want to do the maths about the others right now, but these marks for the jumps adds up to 19.80, probably one of the worst in top10, or well maybe even worse (since even Denis Ten who is ironically "ten"th got 24 points from the jumps), which is fair. But except that, he deserved what he got and I won't even discuss this because it's for sure. As I checked out Daisuke got better than him in the footwork, which is also fair to me. So do the ones who say he is held up, try to mean he doesn't deserve to get one or two more points from each spin? Or do they mean Lambiel's choreography, transitions, interpretation, execution and skating skills are exaggerated? Well if you think so you should be ready for a bigger exaggeration on Thursday, since his free program La Traviata will be even better in those manners.

Watched it live! Spotted Brian Boitano and had a photo taken with Jeffrey Battle- he was such a good sport (and cute)!

Plush: The jumps werejust so fantastic, but the rest was noticeably sub par.
Ten & Kozuka: Should've been much much higher (personally above Lambiel)
Lambiel: I'm disappointed that his charisma had more to do with his upper body. Have his spins got slower? He was beautiful, but the score was too high.

Takahashi:rock::rock::clap: I screamed so much and the audience responded enthusiastically!
Chan: Beautiful beautiful skating. I was relieved with the unexpectedly fair judging tho.

Lysacek: He was great live. Hit every beat of the music and loved the spiral to the jump. Looked faster live. The biggest applause tonight.

Mmm Plushy vs. Evan=Rocky vs. Drago from Rocky 4

However, he looked like a lost little boy once Plushenko got his claws out. The Los Angeles-based 25-year-old needs a confidence pick-me-up before Thursday.

I'm no fan of Lysacek, but ouch. Was it only Lysacek and Plushenko at the conference? I wanna know if he said anything to Daisuke ... >______>

Dunno! Good thing that Daisuke is laying low. Taking the Shizuka approach! :)

Now that analogy is stuck in my head... I can see Evan (as Rocky) and Plushy (as Drago) in boxer shorts (not undies) and gloves and the Olympics were in Sochi not Vancouver and the Russian national anthem plays with Evgeni saying to Evan before the 1st Round, "I MUST BREAK YOU!"
