Mikhail Kolyada

For nearly this entire season, I thought the flip was a second lutz. That explains the discussion about the edge call.

I am no expert; after 50 yrs of watching skating, I only learned how to distinguish them, beyond easy ones like axel and lutz, last Olys—and the one I still can’t identify is the Salchow. So if I can’t, I know it’s a Salchow! (I know what the mechanics are, but watching live can’t do it.) At least we don’t have commentators interrupting to say what jump each is now that we have the box!
Thats interesting, I find a salchow very easy to see, but had struggled with a flip until I realised that I need to watch out for steps into it and it became much easier.
BTW commentators often make mistakes on calling jumps too!
We are just two weeks from SP - my heart won't take the pressure I doubt I will be able to watch live

Ah, yes, gorgeous! Do you think they are planning a Team event layout with 4sal and two 4t ?
I’d say it’s too soon for a TE layout. We’d have to see how he’s landing his jumps.
For Worlds, I think the 4sal is not a sure thing, but it’s a possibility.

Well, well...

Mikhail plans to jump 4S & 4T both in SP and FS at Worlds, said T.Mishina. "He wants to fight, he is serious, understands all responsibility, which is assigned to him. He left St. Petersburg in a good mood. He has 4T & 4S, but the fact is how stable content will be in SP and FS"

Guess we'll be on the edge of our seats. No one can say he doesn't want to win it.

Oh God please no, I have been contemplating for a while now shall I or not watch live as frankly I am not too well still to take the strain, and this news I guess settles it.
I am especially stunned by changes to SP; I thought that they might go for a more ambitious LP but SP?!!
Oh I am scared. I thought Mishin of prudent approach. To skate two programs with new layouts having zero millage on both at WORLDS where Olympic spots to be decided I feel is so risky
You don't think its a hoax why Mishina is talking about it and not Mishin?
No I just refuse to believe they would go for such high risk strategy.

Edit: In fact I don't remember ever Mishin talking in that manner before the competition, something odd about it.
Tatyana Mishina will not be going to Stockholm with Semenenko, it will be Mishin & Prokofieva

I think they’ll see how he’s jumping his stuff in training. Especially the SP, it would be good to be more prudent in their approach. But the FS he skated with his three quads was fine. I don’t know, I don’t think he’d bomb terribly to the point of not making the cut. Also, two quotas are very achievable. But we’ll see.

Well he only attempted a 3 quad LP once this season at the team event resulting in a stepout on 4S and some mistakes on last two jumping passes probably due to lack of stamina, mistakes proved to be expensive both in TES & PCS. I'd say the risk is probably worth it in the LP, because of potential edge call on a flip. All on condition that a mistake on 4S will not bring down the rest of the program.
If that was their intention why he didn't try it at Challenge Cup? That would give him some mileage on the new layout...

He had that neck issue right before Challenge Cup, didn't he? That may be why.

Thank goodness, old layout SP! I might watch live after all!
I'd almost managed to convince myself that it would be alright, that Liza T got 3A for the first time at Worlds in 2015 and it didn't do her any harm ;)
4sal in LP is risky but it is a risk worth taking as 1) to have only one type of quad in the arsenal is not sending a right message to the judges, 2) the only alternative is a flip and that even a bigger gamble and would lose him quite a few points if the edge called.
The only thing I don't understand why they always place a new jump first, if it were me I would start with a tried & tested 4T (or 3A), get nerves out of the way and then try 4sal. But I place my faith in Professor Mishin's.

For pure selfish reasons I would prefer old layout in a hope of seeing this masterpiece skated clean but ....

New jump first is usually a stamina thing, and also because the skaters mind is wholly focused on that jump. For example Kolyada might be thinking too much about the 4S when he has a 4T first, and in turn mess up to 4T, whereas thus allows him to get the 4S out, and then focus 1 element at a time for the ones he is confident in completing.

Misha did pretty well today. His score is not to my liking, but skating early, a little mistake on the combo, and he was super concentrated, so I'm okay. Here's hoping he can seal the deal in the FS.

The turn in the combo was the most musical one in the history of FS - just a part of choreo :)
but sadly very costly one :(
I didn't expect a 100 considering an early starting number but 97- 98 he would have got. Well, as he said in this interview: it could have been better but it could have been worse, it's life

I expected worse tbh looking at his face & body language before he started - he looked very very tense. Good job he coped with nerves. I'd say Mika in the past would do a 2T but he managed to squeeze a fully rotated 3T somehow.
That 3A was out of this world 3A :hap10:shame on you judges for not giving it +5 across the board

A good position for LP I think.
Judges probably felt that they underscored him and 'corrected' themselves by holding a few other scores down a little (compared to other competitions). I wasn't expecting him to finish in the last group for LP let alone the 4th - sigh of relief...
He is in the last group where he belongs so job well done.
