Its a huge step in the right direction aka the podium

If he's consistent the Fed wont be pushing Kovtun that much imo
But he needs time

congratulations to our quirky puppy prince (his nickname getting longer and longer )!!! i wanted to keep quiet but i cant! i cant help but he was robbed with 76 PCS, as much as Florent (i know it was his swan song and he skated amazingly but program is very empty inbetweens, lots of posing and i think judges got carried away a little, i feel like horrible person saying that :hopelessness, popping 3Sal didnt help either, anyway, enough rant! i am sure he enjoyed every moment and i did too! hopefully we will see him at Gala

Not sure about this year, but last year Michal and Viktoria Helgesson who finished in 5th skated at the Gala (Viktoria skated together with her sister Josh who finishe 4th). But as far as I checked, Maxim and Mae who finished in 5th didn't skate the year before...

eta: but I just found James /Cipres in the 5th did skate at the Gala so I'm really not sure But I think it's quite normal to have skaters in top 5, isn't it?

I think Mika was a little unlucky here - first of all, if it was not for the missed last season, he would have skated in the last group in the SP and got higher PCS, then when he stayed in the penultimate group for the lp (both through his own mistakes and the fact that so many skaters skated lights out) it was again predictable that his PCS would be lower than it could have been. And skating after Amodio's skate of his life didn't help either with judges I guess.
I am a bit sad that even one less mistake might meant a podium finish but it also could have been much worse. So well done Mika. A fifth place, a small bronze and a satisfaction from coming back strong in the lp I think is quite enough to be very happy! BTW looking through the protocols Mika got level4 for all his spins & stsqs - not bad!!!
I still cant get over how he fell on the quad it seemed such a good jump - it was like he gave up on the landing and that 3A - his money jump but at least he did 2 beautiful ones in the lp!

I guess it's the same problem he had at the Rostelecom, his quad is really high that he tends to lose the timing to open his free leg. In both SP and FS, it looked to me that he was a bit too tentative to get his free leg behind. Does anyone else think that he has a bit different technique to jump 3A in SP from the ones he does in FS? Probably because he does a bracket step before the jump, he gets more momentum going horizontally, so his landing was a bit tight at the Nationals, and here he was slightly off axis.

I think so too, his skating order didn't help him much probably. The judges didn't go with PCS at all in this whole event, except for few top men, so his score wasn't that bad compared to what others got though. I did thought he was a bit slow in FS but still he deserved something higher than 78 imo... Well if he wasn't a newbie, 80+ for sure. It'll come in time!
