Mikhail Kolyada

I too think there was pressure - maybe less in the SP; but after having skated such an excellent SP, and having suddenly been moved up from the first group to the last, in the midst of all medal contenders... at his first Worlds'... in front of "all the world" so to speak... How could there not be pressure?

And by that point Kovtun had done his rather less-than spectacular thing, so basically it was on Kolyada to show the World that Russian skaters have it when it counts. Which he does. :)

I understand Mika didn't know the Maxim's score then.
But he said that the LP in Boston was the hardest program he has ever done, in fact, the hardest thing he's ever done in all his life.

I believe every word of his, but it's just mind-boggling how little that showed. He looked focused, sure and confident to me - what a strong young man he is

And really, "he didn't just do what he could and that was enough", he skated those 2 programs better than ever before all season, IMO. In a stacked, talented, amazing men's field at that. Everyone who can't give that to him is blind, biased or both.

And thanks everyone for posting those cute pics, he sure got his good looks from his mama :luv17: and he looks like such a great guy to hang out with, can't wait for even more fun, adorkable pics with other skaters in the future!

There are some interviews with Mikhail and his coach up at http://www.fsrussia.ru/ I don't think I've seen them on this thread yet; if they are, sorry for double-posting!

Mikhail's interview is here, Chebotareva's is here. Google Translate links are here and here. I'm not a Russian-speaker so I can't vouch for quality/accuracy (hint hint, for our talented translators!), but interesting nevertheless.

I'm glad to hear that he has a quad salchow, since having two quads should keep him in the mix. Possible quad lutz, wow! He certainly has a beautiful triple. I'd love to see him to a quad, as long as he doesn't rush it - the slow and steady approach seems to be working well, and will hopefully keep him from getting injured.

I'm going to post here and say that I was amazed when I saw him skate his FP in person at Worlds. Super clean and pristine. He definitely has a bright future. No pressure whatsoever and two clean programs. Which is interesting cause though Yuzuru had a CLEAN SP and Javi had a CLEAN FP, neither of them had TWO clean programs at Worlds. Same with Boyang Jin. I must say I'm mighty impressed with Mikhail.

Many thanks Cheerknithanson, much appreciated! I would love also to hear from someone who saw his SP in the arena.
I am interested what was your impression of Mika's speed and ice coverage? Thanks in advance

I actually can't answer that. I saw 24 programs so of course I can't really talk about speed and ice coverage. Though I did watch his FP again on YouTube. It won't do justice though.

And I only saw his FP in person. I saw his SP on YouTube cause I was in the car on the way to Cheesecake Factory when the SP happened for him.

Ahh okay but thanks anyway!

Happy Birthday to our fabulous Valentina Chebotareva :hb: :hap10: :hap93:

From the interview above:
- By the way, your coach Valentina Chebotareva answered our questions with tears of joy in her eyes. She even said that your performances were the best gift for her birthday.
- Yes, she told me the same thing.

Ok hint is taken  my translation (definitely not talented but should be an improvement on Google's):

- Congratulations on the end of the competition. Misha, please comment on the results. How difficult it was to compete here?
- It was difficult, of course. But there is such an atmosphere in the final group that you want to skate better. Just want it! It inspires and gives additional energy. As we hoped for, I skated two clean programs .
- What did you fear most of all? Not to cope with nerves, not to lose concentration?
- I was not afraid. Just tried not to think about anything, to go out and skate.
- Was competing in the last warm-up and the presence of Yuzuru Hanyu psychologically intimidating?
- Not at all. Yuzuru is a great great skater.. What he does in training, it is very difficult. You have to work and work very, very hard. But I saw in this situation - in competing alongside him - more positive than negative.
- But difficult in what sense?
- Physically. It's very hard.
- How did you learn to prepare yourself psychologically so well for competition? Maxim Kovtun has admitted that he has a problem with that.
- I do not know about Maxim, but I try not to think. About anything and anyone. There is just myself, the ice and the judges. That fact that there was a full arena there was great. But do not think about it, and everything will turn out well.
- How did you feel today during the program?
- At first, I felt good, and in the end even better.
- Before going out on the ice you knew how skated Maxim Kovtun?
-- No. I do not look at the scores of others. It distracts.
- Did it help that you skated first in the last group?
- It helped. Really. I do not like waiting, sitting, walking, being nervous. Being first I warmed up,then rested just a bit and went and got all done.
- At the beginning of the season could you imagine that you will be here?
-- I could not. Then I did not think about anything.
- What were the goals for the season?
- To get to the European Championship, and then whatever happens next ,to get on the World team - great.
- What do you want now?
- It is a secret.
- Then what is the next goal?
- To add the second quad in the free program. This is the most realistic goal for the next season.

Thank you! And yes, I think adding a second quad in the free program is a very realistic goal, given how good his jumps are.

Kind of weird he says "a boy" because Mikhail is actually about 4 months OLDER than Kovtun.

I gather Mr Mishin has own agenda where Mika concerned. I convinced (but have no proof) that Mishin tried to take Mika from Chebotareva at some stage but Mika refused or rather his parents did, remaining loyal to Chebotareva. Naturally it didn't go well with the great Professor.

After the SP at Worlds Mishin said that he did not believe Mika could skate clean in the LP too, that Mika always makes mistakes and that he was more happy for Chebotareva than Mika because what she suffered from Mika makes her a saint. It was not directly negative but rather hostile in its tone and totally uncalled for.

The choice of a word 'boy' above as you can guess now was not a chance one. I let you draw your own conclusions

So he wasn't chosen for TCC as expected and I'm rather relieved. After the long and dramatic season he had, I hope he enjoys some rest and get well prepared for the coming season. Can't wait to see his new programmes, also wondering if he's going to work with a new choreographer (though I'll be happy enough if he sticks with Olga.).

Guys, I am going to share with you new information from Misha, maybe it will be interesting for you. First of all, yesterday we decided to congratulate his coach with birthday and also his choreographer with the end of this hard, but successful season. We organised a little presents for them with a help of members of our group VK and bought huge bouquets. You can see them on picture that Perdita shared with us, but in life they are much bigger!
Administrator of our group Kate went to the rink with those flowers and gave them and postcards with our wishes to Olga Urievna and Valentina Mikhailovna. It was a surprise to see Misha there. It was his first visit to the rink after worlds and everybody hugged him and congratulated. It was very sweet and cute and guys said they didn't believe Misha was 4th!
Unfortunately, that day Misha didn't skate with others but he helped his coach. Also, great news, we made a deal with him and on Monday wil have an interview with him!
One more thing I want to tell you, Stanislava Konstantinova who skate with Misha said Misha can already do 4S in programmes!

Rumours, rumours.
Even if Mishin tried to have Kolyada as a student I doubt that anyone can suppose that Mishin's bitter about not having him. I think that Mishin can appreciate a loyal student. And he tried to not raise expectations on Kolyada when he said that he didn't think that he was being able to do a clean long. And he said that Kolyada is a difficult student, maybe he's even happy about not having him in his group. Who knows. But the figure skating clubs/coaches in St. Petersburg seem to be close, so I don't think that there's bad blood between them. Mishin complimenting Chebotareva says everything I think.
And to a man like Mishin every guy below the age of 30 is a boy I think. You shouldn't hold that against him.
