Mikhail Kolyada

I can feel the huge pressure on Mika now from both the Federation and the fans. Hopefully he can handle it well and move towards his aims step by step. Nowadays the men's skating is getting really hard, and the layout of 2 quads in the SP and 3 to 4 quads in the LP for those top men just sounds crazy... :jaw:

Just another interview with him in Russian

http://spbvedomosti.ru/news/sport/plyushchenko_videl_ne_nbsp_te_nbsp_prokaty_/

There are not many new information, he says that he graduated university as a figure skating coach, sometimes he has the opportunity to work with kids, he thinks the results are not bad, he likes to be a coach, but he concentrated on his own career now.

About programms he thinks they are rather sophisticated right now. He was asked had he argued with his coaches about ideas of programms, he answered that they know him so good, that it almost never happens.

Misha is right in saying that his LP is a relatively difficult program with lots of choreography that requires a certain level of artistic performance. But the problem is that it constantly gets accused of being primitive and juvenile because people dislike the topic. So essentially all the effort put into it is going to waste. On the other hand, I am yet to encounter anyone who's had a bad reaction to his EX, so it is obviously a far safer direction to go in. Just give the people what they want instead of trying to convince everyone they should want what you give them. Fortunately, it seems that they are planning to do it anyway for at least one of the programs next season.

To be fair, TAT didn't actually say that. What she said was that it had been easier for Misha because after a season out he was hungry for competitions and nobody expected much of him. Kovtun not having a good season had made it easier for him to shine. The other relevant thing she said was that Misha was talented with excellent basics but still had a lot to learn. The rest of the interview was essentially another ode to quads.

I still think TAT was out of order in bringing Kovtun into this and I don't think other skaters would agree that a comeback after a serious injury is easy because they had a chance to rest - look how tough it was for Kaetlyn Osmond after sitting out the whole season with a broken ankle - her comeback was a total disaster and only this season she is beginning to shine. That Mika managed to overcome his injury and come back so strong is only down to his character & determination and there was no need to try and undermine his achievements.

I understand what you are saying but not sure i totally agree. I like it when a skater has ideas of his own and is brave enough to stick to those ideas. We have too many similar programs (Hallelujahs too!) chosen only because skaters or their teams think it would please people and judges. Mika's last season programs were controversial in a sense too but they stood out and there were plenty of people who loved them. Would Mika have won so many fans with some war horses however pleasing it could be? I doubt it.
I am a bit confused about his LP but I'd wait to see it skated clean. I watched on purpose a bit of Cirque du Soleil on Sky Arts and I must say there is plenty of more interesting music there to choose from (though I hate circus myself and always hated even as a child) tbh I don't know how they managed to find such pieces at all.;)
I actively do not like the middle part of the program I'd go that far but if Mika feels it is right for him - that's all that matters. Interestingly BESP commentators were quite complimentary. Catherine (who is this new lady BTW?) said that she enjoyed the program up to the fall on the lutz. She criticised choreo of quite a number of skaters - constructively I must say but she didn't say anything negative about his LP. But about his sp both Simon Reed & herself were very vocal how the music is very Russian and works well for Russian audience but would not work same way in other parts of the world (I smiled remembering how crowd in Boston enthusiastically clapped along!) As a topic his LP is not good only becouse it is in the same genre as the sp. I think the original idea was good, to try something new in the sp and stay in the comfort zone in the lp as to allow to add second quad into it. But thanks to Lakernik & Co we have what we have.

Yes, I know, I don't actually hate his LP. It's just that the whole thing is frustrating. And it is obviously for Misha too because of all the criticism he's had to hear - he sounded defensive.
The BESP commentators did not seem to be aware that this is the second season Misha is skating this SP. Well, at least they remembered who Misha was.

Honestly I just hope he never reads anything in the media (I remember him advising Stanislava not to do so) because only a very lazy hasn't been criticising his programs, his costumes, his haircut, his facial expression etc etc... One thing I find reassuring that he is 21 not 15 like many skaters who suddenly find themselves in the spotlight. He has maturity on his side to deal with it but nevertheless it can not be easy.

I believe Misha doesn't read anything on purpose, but something has to percolate. He doesn't live in a vacuum. As for his haircut, he has the type of hair that has to be cut very carefully and not allowed to grow out or it begins to look messy. A good hairdresser who he goes to at least before big competitions is required if he wants his hair to look good.

I think he is yet to find his style (hair cut).
Sure he is aware of all the criticism and he did sound a bit defensive as you said. I have a feeling from his performances that he doesn't believe in his lp that much himself (I really hope I am wrong here). Maybe last winter it seemed like a good idea but not anymore. But as I said before I am less and less worried about programs. Hope the preparation for NHK is going well...

Just realised that Mika is the only Russian man at NHK - lonely! But he's got Anna, Masha & Alena to cheer him up :)Any info on when the Russian team is to leave for Japan?

There will be Victoria Sinitsina & Nikita Kastalapov there, so not the only one, but I'm not sure if they are firendly with each other. Wouldn't it be awesome if Mika snatched a GPF spot? It may be hard though and I just wish for podium finish.

The chance is so slim that it is virtually non existent I just hope for a clean LP (and a SP), not sure even if I hope for a 4S anymore...

Ohh Mika ;)
He looked like didn't get any sleep at all, same as Valentina - jetlag hit them hard

I def hoped he'd do better
BUT if you look at the table its NOT that bad at all!!

go clen please in the FS! & get some sleep!

Oh the FS is so much harder if one is tired... But lets hope for the best! Good luck Mika!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mika skating first tomorrow in the last group like in Boston - hope it will bring him luck!

Yes, he was so slow and gave off a somnabulistic feel. But it looks like he was far from the only one hit by jetlag at that competition. I had been wondering before NHK what the best way to handle something like that is - arriving a week or two in advance would be great but impracticable in the great majority of cases.

On the positive side - Misha can count, doesn't lose his head, doesn't give up on a program after a serious mistake.

Arriving a week before would be great but who is to pay the expenses? I have no idea how the athletes handle that, even 2 - 3 hours time difference is so hard especially when travelling east, here we are talking what -10 hours? Both Mika & Valentina looked like ghosts in the K&C (or like the passengers getting off the plane after a night flight) their faces were positively of greenish colour. We must not forget that it is practically only second long-haul travel for Mika , and in the USA they were fortunate to come 2 weeks in advance for Worlds.
I've just browsed through Russian forums and I must say I am disgusted with the level of negativity there. Mika made one mistake, got a ok score because he didn't let the rest of program fall apart, still within the reach of the podium but people are acting like it was a total disaster.
My heart goes to Mika, tomorrow is going to be tough, he was clearly beating himself up after the skate, hope he can skate well enough tomorrow to be content - regardless of medals.
Once again good luck Mika - we believe in you!

Oh, people on Russian forums always react like that to competitions, they are prone to huge mood swings from elation to despair and back based on one skate. Those with a more balanced take on things keep more quiet. And yes, tomorrow will be tough and FS is hard to skate when you are tired, but then at TCC last season Misha somehow managed to pull himself together after a bad SP, even though he looked like he'd just scaled Mt. Everest after his FS. Maybe he'll get angry in a good way this time too. We shall see.
