Mikhail Kolyada

I wonder if they got the idea from the Magic on Ice show last September. He skated to the same piece from Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, although as a different character. One problem is that those outside Russia don't seem to get what it is he is portraying in his EX.

I know who Baba Yaga is, and I'm not Russian ;) I guess all countries who were influenced by Russia would know.

Baba Yaga is mostly known is the Slavic folklore, but it influenced non-Slavic countries' folklore too. I also think it may be more known outside of this cultural circle, because of Mussorgsky's influence.

I would be deadly scared of this program if I was a five years old

Good job, Mika, I enjoyed this performance very much!

I'm a new fan of figure skating and watched Kolyada perform at WTT for the first time. I can't help but think that he's EXTREMELY cute. I want to to cherish him :')

I think "witch on a broomstick" motif is common in European folklore in general, although details differ. Can't say anything for Japan, though, not familiar with their fairy tales.

There are anime about witches with broomsticks so I think it's a worldwide known element of folklore.

And I love this EX. It was funny and so much in Misha's style. The great ending of great competition.

I didn't only mean witch on a broomstick, but meant Baba Yaga, which has deeply influenced my country's folklore, too, and I'm not even from a Slavic country.

As I said it's known in Slavic countries, and in some non Slavic countries, too, so it's not true that no one knows about Baba Yaga outside of Russia.

Well, people keep complaining about quirky characters coming from Mika in his program, but you can see how he shines when he does them. Do I want him to try different things? Yes, but I wouldn't be mad if he went this way again. Of course, there are a thousand ways to do these kind of programs, so let's hope they know where to get inspiration from.

I love the quirkiness, too and I think it suits him. He interpreted the music and the character perfectly. He even jumped like a wicked, scary Baba Yaga (except for the lutz maybe )
If he chooses to do similar programs next season, I'll be happy. If not, then I look forward what kind of music he will choose for his programs.
Go Mika!

Today I was thinking intensively about warhorse (because Olympic Season) which would suit Mika

1. Master of the House - Les Mis
It's funny, it's quirky and it would fit so SO well Mika's choreography. As the song isn't long it would be great for SP.

2. Popular - Wicked
Next musical. Today's EX inspired me and I think Mika as witch is a great idea haha! It also could be in a mash up with Ding Dong Witch is Dead from Wizard of Oz. Again funny and light

3. Defying gravity - Wicked.
Again Wicked. Please don't tell me that Mika's beautiful 3A with "I think I'll try defying gravity" in the background wouldn't be great. Also Mikhail showed that classy programs suit him as well and enable him showing off his skating skills and musicality (like Hallelujah)

4. Piano Concerto 2 in C minor - S. Rachmaninoff
Great warhorse with powerful beginning PERFECT for fully rotated and landed 4Lz as the opening jump. Also I have soft spot for skaters who skate to their national music and Sergei was Russian. It also had funnier, lighter moments so be not afraid of Mika skating to heavy piano music.

5. Piano Concerto in G major - M. Ravel
Eh I think I just really enjoy piano concerts but I can't help that I see our favourite goofy ball when I listen to this one. It's so great and energetic and I'd love to see Mika or Zhenya Medvedeva skating to this music

Good choices. I think Les Mis would suite him a lot.

I love Rachmaninoff, but Piano Concerto 2 in C minor reminds me always of Mao. :)
Ravel's piano concerto in G would suit him I think.

What about these (non of them are warhorse, though):

Russian folk music, or this, something with balalaika
Nouvelle chanson? Debout sur le Zinc
Or some modern cabaret? Mamamuskupov - La Ritournelle

Classical pieces:
Prokofiev's Violin concerto 1 in D
Shostakovich's Overture for Russian and Khirgiz folk themes
Rimsky Korsakov - Fantasia on Russian themes

Just came in to say I've loved Kolyada's out of the box style for awhile now, and was elated to see that he was doing a Baba Yaga program for his WTT gala program, WIN WIN! :)

Yah like Wicked and Wizard of Oz here in the USA... Though Wicked leans toward overcoming stereotype and encourages understanding....

I think the idea even for this season was to do one quirky and one more 'traditional' program, it's just that they had to go back to the old quirky SP. I think it's rather unlikely that they are planning two quirky programs for next season, one maybe (although a lot of people do not want any). And as far as I understand the Fed is planning to check up on his programs much earlier this time, so that they'll have time to choreograph a new program (if it comes to that) or at least change something.

But not everyone agrees: Ilia Aberbuch was very vocal in this interview about Mika's programs:

''When a person comes out to perform to the music from 'Nu Pogodi' - it is simply ridiculous''

Yeah, Ilia, we know we know -anyone not ringing the phone or jumping rope...

I am actually dreading the amount ofRusFed' attention Mika is going to 'receive' now, when Maxim proved to be a headcase once again and Mika is inevitably the only hope...
I don't know what to make of the news that they are not going to use an outside choreographer - I don't quite understand that but then again I think Olga is very talented and I never had a problem with her choreo per se but the music choices. On the plus side she is there all the time to develop the programs as the season progresses and she knows Mika better than anyone.

Mika isn't really the "only" hope, it's just Russian Fed dramatizing. Dmitri aliev, Andrei Lazukin, Alexander Samarin all are quite promising. If only Russian Fed put their attention equally to all skaters... I really do hope the scenario from last year won't repeat. Tough I like how Mika is now considered good skater worldwide, he has established himself :)

If Averbukh was allowed to make Mika's program I'd take rope... We would probably see our little sunshine skating to "Book Thief" music or "Boy in stripped pyjamas" wearing stripped pyjamas...

I'll be happy with any choreography that does not leave the viewer thinking "he can do so much better than this". That just shouldn't happen with good programs. They should look like they are fully utilizing the skater's strengths, while also being convenient to skate and earning points with the judges. I think Olga has given Misha choreography that is convenient and has point-earners in it, but in a way that somehow ends up looking like it's wasting his potential. Hallelujah didn't need to either be convenient or earn points and it ended up looking great on Misha, but there shouldn't be an either/or choice there. Misha isn't perfect by any means and he obviously should not get a program that he has trouble keeping up with either artistically or physically, which could be a danger with a new choreographer who doesn't know him. But skaters with much worse choreographic and performance potential have been given competition programs that they can cope with and look their best in the process. Hopefully Olga can combine those two components in her new programs.

Did the Fed call Misha the only hope? I thought that was coined by the figure skating fans. The Fed is definitely paying attention to Aliev and Samarin, Lazukin also considering that they sent him to the Universiade, where he fell apart in the FS as he is prone to due to what seems like physical rather than mental reasons. With his track record I doubt the Fed is counting on him for much for now, but they are certainly not ignoring him.
