Mikhail Kolyada

Poor Mika, a few days ago his news would has been at the front of the Edge discussion, now it is drowned in the avalanche of latest developments - what an exciting weekend for FS world!

I am excited and a bit cautious at the same time. The very fact that they are seeking help is such a positive development. Not sure I like it that Valentina going with him though it is not confirmed I understand?
My main concern is that Raf will mess up with Mika's classic pure jumping technique with no real gain in the end. I do hope though he will be able to make 4lz more consistent, the question is it possible without messing up with technique :scratch2:[emoji23]
I felt more positive on him helping with the mental strength aspect until I read this in Raf's interview on Marin Honda:

“I focus on technical and physical, and when they come together, the mental strength shows up,” Arutunian commented. “I think this is the way it works for everybody. If you train well, and are physically strong, then sooner or later your mental strength will show up. Sometimes it happens late.”

Oh dear I am not sure that is what Mika needs (and I strongly disagree with Raf on that - see e.g Gracie Gold...)
What do you think guys?
Hi, Tutto. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.[emoji847] But I wonder why you don't want Valentina go along with him? [emoji102]
For me, I want to know where the finance comes from and how long he's gonna stay there. If this is going to happen, it probably won't have that much of time to correct his filp or consistency. I'm curious and worried sick at the same time.[emoji28]

Oh it is nothing negative towards Valentina I can assure you I am a big fan of their partnership. It is just in this particular situation being on his own I think would be more productive for his training with Raf. Just my opinion, I would feel more free & relaxed in his place... But I guess there are lots of practical things - where to stay, language barrier etc where having a companion will be useful. I take it nothing is settled yet, the Russians often have issues with getting American visas that's why probably Raf said 'they are trying to organise it'
I don't think a flip is on the cards at all it is a lost battle and with one less jumping pass in LP he doesn't need it. I'd imagine working on consistency of his quads is the goal and Raf's invaluable experience with Nathan (no Russian coach has that!) was the main factor why they chose him (and maybe him speaking Russian as well + they got on well ever since Boston I seem to remember)
Waiting anxiously for more news

Money wise I would not be surprised if it was paid by RusFed or maybe even initiated in the first place - Mika got that Worlds medal but even more is expected of him now

Misha certainly got a good chunk of prize money this season, so this also might be the reason why he's planning on going in the first place. Don't know if the Fed is willing to shell out some cash with him?

Maybe 50/50? TBH I am more interested if they are going to get programs done there as well - wouldn't be great?!

If the 4Lz can be made more consistent, I don't care about messing up technique, he is not going to start jumping like Shoma, after all. Yuzuru is another skater with a perfect quad lutz technique, and where did it get him? We have to be thankful Misha is still walking around. But I doubt major adjustments are realistic. Something about better control of his axis would be good. Can he not jump as high? Ice is hard and he has to stop that inertia with his knees time after time even when the jump is perfect.

Technical confidence makes you more likely to land jumps even if you are terrified. The way Misha jumps the 4Lz right now is very taxing and difficult to control. Of course nerves would easily throw it out of whack. If you can land a jump 8/10 times in practice and in combos, you should be able to land it in competitions at least half the time. It is true that some people's nervous systems are just not designed for high-level competition and there is only so much you can do for them, their body simply stops listening to their brain. But I have seen no evidence Misha is that bad.

To have programs that are genuinely novel, Misha has to be ready to step outside his comfort zone. Up until now he has been skating what is convenient for him in terms of choreography.

Yulia Gladkikh is from Misha's VK group and the interview was taken in mid-April.

I wonder how long Misha is planning to go for.

Same here. An internship, as was mentioned in a tweet, implies I would think at least a several weeks if not months. But when I read Raf's interview and realised that Valentina is going too - that sounded like a short trip then - she surely can't leave her other students for long?
I personally think that a couple of months would make more sense otherwise why bother at all
Also interested in their plans regarding 4sal

I think Misha is going to Raf with a specific goal in mind, not just to have a look around and feel the atmosphere. If the goal is "show me what I am doing wrong with my 4Lz/4S", going with Valentina makes sense, she needs to see and learn too. And considering how long Misha's studies are going to last, going for months would essentially mean all of the remaining time.

I guess it'll also depend on how long it might take Raf to figure out what is wrong and more importantly how to fix it - it may be not easy considering Mika's technique is essentially correct (perhaps too correct!)
Meanwhile have you noticed the VK group changed the front page photo -is it an old pic or thank heaven Mika is finally on holiday?!

Let's hope he took a break from his studies and went to a warm sea somewhere.

There has to be a reason why he is prone to tilting backwards on his jumps. It happens on high ones with a lot of time in the air. But if there was in easy fix for that they would have figured it out already.

IMHO he gets too much elevation, most of his landed 4lzs (in the warm-ups, practice etc) have noticeably less height. Nerves I guess, also maybe his injury still subconsciously sends 'signals' to the brain -make sure you have enough air time IDK

Why would his injury signal anything about air time, he broke his ankle on a twizzle?
It's not just his lutz, it happens on his 4T too when his control starts slipping, it's a more general problem. On the 4S on the other hand I don't remember this particular issue, it seems that something else goes wrong there. Maybe it's only toe jumps.

Hello everybody;

Tutto thank you for sharing the interview. I think that if Misha goes to USA with Rafa although for a short period of time, it can be good for him. This season has been hard for Misha, in spite all the medals. In my opinion he has maturated and realised what can be the best for him and what to do. I have a feeling next season we will see a different Mikhail. Cross my/our fingers.

Relative to the change of VK group front page photo It’s not him on holidays. This picture was taken last year during an interview with Figurist-TV from St. Petersburg if I’m not wrong. VK group have use it for a new logotype, Good idea because I didn’t like too much the Harry Potter one. It doesn’t make any favour to his image, ( it’s just my opinion) He has thousands of pictures where he looks so nice and VK group have created so many cool logotypes, like this last one.

Thanks for the info, hmm I actually quite liked Harry Potter one - no accounting for tastes I guess! Anyway Mika is so photogenic - always looks good (not perhaps in a mid-air :))
Waiting impatiently for more news on USA trip ...

Twizzle or no twizzle the point is that it is his landing foot and maybe it is still playing on his mind when doing a high risk element without him thinking of it, of course it is only my speculation only Mika knows that or maybe even he doesnt...
4S is even more 'mysterious' jump it looks so easy and effortless when landed in practice ... sigh...
Hoping Mika will conquer his demons whatever they are in the coming season - the self belief & confidence is the key, sometimes I think Mika is a way too nice, good natured and conscientious person to think highly of himself and that can be a problem but I would not like him to change even for the sake of more victories, okay maybe just to learn how to turn it off during competitions

Well, this Harry Potter logo was created because there were some funny memes on this theme and many people really liked them :D

Hey! Evanescence thank you for sharing all this stuff. Yes, I knew some of them and I have to admit that I laughed with some wisecracks. The Misha- Yagudin one is hilarious! It’s ok for laughing at a certain time but as a logotype.... well, I repeat it’s just my opinion. Probably I’m getting old. :rolleye:
I do want he can find the sorcerer stone, the best landing of quad lutz, steel nerves, confidence, good health and respect towards him (and all skaters).

Shoma Uno singled out Mika as a foreign skater he gets on well with while replying to a question of his fan at Prince Ice World show on last Friday. Mika in his turn said in his recent interview that Shoma is very cheerful, easygoing and cool and that they communicated well during the rehearsal for the gala in Milan. Apparently their English is about the same level which helps. Nathan (to whom Mika paid compliments as well) as a native speaker speaks very fast and hence not easy to understand but makes an effort and slows down when speaks to non native speakers (cool Nathan!) : all that info put together here with a nice pic:

Coming up soon! - new interview with Tatjana Flade:

A nice haircut :luv17:

BTW any thoughts what GPs Mika will be in - isn't the end of May - beginning of June when the GP announced? My bet is on NHK and CoR though I personally would prefer if he steered away from the tradition and did not compete at home...
