Mikhail Kolyada

I don't doubt Misha's ability to deliver a good LP tomorrow, but can he deliver a clean LP? I don't think he can medal without one unless the top men have meltdowns
Boyang doesn't seem to be in very good form as is usual for him early in the season, he is potentially passable. Lazukin and Cha are obviously passable considering Misha's scores are already virtually the same. Brezina is more difficult because of the gap. So Misha could grab bronze with a good skate.

Has anyone noticed that Misha now has two coaches listed in the captions, by the way? Valentina and Mikhail Semenenok.

Yeah, I was going to ask this thread about that. It's on his ISU bio too.

ETA Valentina said in a December 2017 interview that he is a specialist who came to work with Misha two years ago

I think he is the off-ice coach. If so he deserves a mention, he is one of the best ones in Russian figure skating. Misha's stamina and shape is still the top among the Russian men. Stasya's shape has also never been a problem.

What Valentina needs is another on ice coach and not only for the kids like she has now. She doesn't seem to have enough time for her students outside of Misha and Stasya (how many people have even heard of her other students? There is Pavel Vyugov who made it to Nationals once and he's been injured on and off and struggling. I only know of others from people who follow figure skating in minute detail.) Maybe she'll be able to take someone else with potential then.

Hello everyone!

Loooong time without writing, I just wanted to say very very good luck to Misha today, he can do it, he is an amazing skater.

Misha!!! go man go!!!!

Apparently Misha had trouble landing his quads in practice :( I don’t think I’m going to watch the free skate, and I’m going to try and stay away from internet until the event is over. Yesterday was too emotionally taxing what with the euphoria of all the men skating well followed by the devastation from Mikhail, who should be in silver position right now with all of his skills.

Good luck, Misha, skate your best, and I hope you have a performance you can smile about. 😊

It wasn't terrible. The take away is that he seems to have become friends with the axel again. But perhaps landing his quads in practice didn't put him in the best mindset to compete. However, let's not talk about not putting on more triples and losing medals. I'm okay with fourth, people won't whine about it too much.

I think this layout isn't too bad, though.

I haven't seen the performance yet, don't have the emotional fortitude. But it sounds like it wasn't an absolute meltdown? This just confirms my suspicion that Mikhail will always make 1-2 big mistakes in his free :sad4:

I'm absolutely gutted that GPF is gone for him. I know it's still ~technically~ possible, but Yuzuru looked unbeatable and I imagine the pressure to win at home will get to poor Misha :sad21:

I just pray he can regroup for Europeans (Kolyada King of Europe 2019 has to happen some day, dammit) and Worlds. But the psychological barrier needs to be addressed. I don't know how, and I'm sure he already does plenty of work with sports psychologists, but something is not working, and it needs to be addressed.

It isn't the big mistakes, it's the little things that cost him this time. He could have been third easily. Two triples instead of doubles in combos, a normal step sequence and not what he put out there (I honestly don't know what happened with it and his skate in general, he seemed off throughout).

I just saw the protocols and step sequence level 2? Misha  it just makes me admire him more for being able to lay down a perfect one in the SP after missing the combo

He could have been third, yes, but I'd rather him stay just fourth, especially after the short. One triple and a decent step sequence would have put him in third. Well, a better PCS score would have put him third, thank god the judges didn't go with it.

Being third would have given him hope for the final. There is still no reason for him not to skate well at Rostelecom Cup. He has already skated well even this season after all.

Mikhail on the competition. He seems OK and is focusing on the positives. :2thumbs:

"There were technical mistakes on the jumps. Maybe my breath floundered after the salchow, maybe I should have taken more of a pause. The rest, other than the quads, I did today. My head, my arms, my legs were working normally. I understand that I was not in the condition to do everything. We'll work on it. But there is no room for disappointment. What was, was, and a negative result is still a result."

But what does he mean by "I wasn't in the right condition to do everything"? Does he mean physically (he said his legs were fine) or psychologically? Or is he referring to the SP disappointment?

It doesn't matter what he says, I don't believe not making it into the final is not a blow to his confidence that he doesn't need.

It's actually not impossible for him to make the Final still, if he gets silver at Rostelecom. If this competition did him one favour, Boyang is absolutely out of contention at this point, probably even if he wins IdF, and he'd have to beat Nathan to do that -- which doesn't look likely, based on how he did in Finland.

A few things would have to go his way, but he'd be fighting for the sixth and final spot.

I mean, he didn't pop, which I'm really proud of him for. He should feel good about that, given his history and especially given the SP. Quads are hard to stabilize. Shame about that 4T, which has been so solid lately.

This word in Russian usually refers to the physical. Combined with the morning practice reports and his overall performance, not just the quads, does make me wonder if something is going on. He was drinking something hot before and after skates which isn't normal practice for him.

Misha could have caught whatever it is Valentina has I suppose. But if it's yet another virus there might be something not good going on with his immunity.

Okay, I watched it and it wasn't that bad, other than those twizzles :palmf: As always, not the disaster I was dreading; he simply made too many mistakes here to make up the difference from the SP. And he landed the loop! This program looks so good on him and will only get better as the season goes on. The most important thing right now is that he gets healthy.

According to twitter he was invited to the gala :luv17:
