Some sad news Kovtun is out (Lazukin in) how it is going to affect their chances of keeping 3 spots I can't figure out given unpredictability of all of them. No Carmen competition so for Mika

It was a terrible decision to let two thirds of the team skate so close to Worlds, what if Lazukin was also out of form, who would they even send? I just hope they can do well, all three of htem.

I think chances of three of them skating to their potential is about zero - it is Russian men we are talking about! My hunch is that Lazukin will be somewhere in 15th place possibly even lower, Samarin will not do as well as some believe and he will crumble under pressure either in the SP or LP (but not both though)
Mika is an enigma at this point, he might do well in SP if that will happen to be his good day, but I sadly do not believe in him skating a good LP, he simply hasn't been in top form this season and neither stamina or confidence are there. Miracles do happen and won't I be ecstatically happy if that is a case but the realist in me says that isn't not going to happen. I just hope he is to be spared from a total disaster
There is a poll of who will guess Mika's LP layout with some interesting options on his VK
I can't even choose...:scratch2:
I believe that his only chance of a good showing here is to put aside the ambitions for the moment and opt for two 4Ts but the way this season has been it is not going to happen I fear

I think he's going for the layout he's been practicing lately--3 quads, 2 3As. Unless something happened in training, I don't see him changing it out now.

The theme of this season has been so far - a new layout for each competition, so I expect unexpected :)
Also we don't know the RusFed might have intervened out of concern for the spots - though it is hard to imagine them ordering Mika to simplify the layout
Or maybe they are focusing on Samarin I don't know

It's not like the Fed can do much about the spots right now, not many guys at home who are better than those going to Worlds. Also, if anything else, they want more quads. It's a wonder to me why Kovtun watered down his layouts, compared to Samarin who's only adding more quads. Idk what's going to happen.

I really feel for Maxim, his skating is not my cup of tea and he is in direct competition with Mika who is always my number 1 s but I kinda started liking him this season and respect him for his comeback. I hope we get some explanation because so far it all has been rather vague.
My reasoning for Mika's going for a easier layout is simple, he hardly can compete with the top 3 or 4 if to include Boyang anyway this season but with 2 quad LP he won't let pass him skaters like Brown, Rizzo, Cha thus staying in the top 5 or 6 which I think will be a good result

I don'i like Kovtun's skating, but kudos to him to fight back this season, such a pity to end it like this. I have always thought that his weird jumping and bad technique will come to bite him. It is hard too stay injury free for a skater with good basic skills, but put a bad one and the skater will use too much some muscles and joints and put pressure where it should not be.

I was just wondering about his practices but it seems he has just arrived today and resting after a long flight. Which means he didn't fly with Mishin's group

Tomorrow we sure will hear something - God bless Jackie Wong...

So far that little info we get is not too encouraging - practices have been so far so so - lots of 1A for sure
It well could be that he is still very tired after the journey and just trying to feel the ice
On other hand I seem to remember that at many practices this season he was doing really well and then didn;t in competition -so maybe it is a good sign

I gather that the arena is a long distance from where they are staying so it must add to the jetlag etc, hopefully he will adjust by tomorrow to some degree

He jumped his SP content well enough, but people said he was feeling the ice and not even jumping a lot, so who knows. I'm not worried, per se, just want him to skate well and not injure himself. The rest is a bonus after the season he's having.

I'd say 'to skate well' will be a bonus full stop. I am worried as never before, I am off work tomorrow but dreading to watch it live. I don't know what to make of the starting order. Thankfully he is not last neither skating after Yuzuru but was hoping for earlier number as he prefers
There is a practice video on his VK he seems to be just stroking around looking really down - maybe he is got a cold or something but didn't seem to be blowing his nose every 5 sec (a sight we got so used to this season!) - thank God

Ok, he had all the opportunities *again* and a quadless person was leading. I’ve pinned so many hopes to be crushed this season. I’m going to make one more wish: a clean Carmen, because, really, what does he have to lose? Then hopefully he will rebuild, if he’s not so disenchanted that he doesn’t make another go at it.

If you're disappointed, I can only imagine how he feels. Interesting how the axel was giving him trouble all week, and Misha wasn't even jumping the quad sal in practice, but in the SP it was the toe that did him in. I think he needs the off season. And I wonder if he's going to move somewhere else.

Yeah, I don’t mean to be an entitled fan, but the early season started so promisingly. Clearly he is not in a good place and the hc tag will stick maybe for good. I think that’s what bothers him most. I would like to see him move elsewhere, but I have a sinking feeling he might give up. Can’t afford Raf, not sure Raf would want him since he says he takes two years for his methods to work. The jumps ARE THERE; he can’t find them. During that ONE quad lutz, people were saying, he’s got that one down. Then he lost them all—even the axel. I’ll def stick around, I’m not a fair-weathered fan, but I hope he does too. Nathan benefitted so much from that being chill, relaxed image that the media kept mentioning early on. And for a time he started to tighten up but then went back to the kinda swagger. Misha always seems too tense—especially around the jaw. I wonder if he is capable of lightening up ala Brezhina. Quick, someone get that man a puppy! Or like earbuds to tune out.

Two quad lutzes, if you mean landed cleanly. And he had 'lost' the axel earlier. Intermittently. It's a pity tripling the 4T is such a costly mistake because then you have to jump 3-2. Otoh, he could have popped it to a double and got zero for it, so looking on the bright side. I was afraid of worse to be honest, like a popped 3A on top of the other things, we've seen that this season.

As for relaxing in Russian men's skating - not going to happen. The guys are going out there looking like they have been tasked with saving the Earth in an intergralactic war.
