Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

She does look great! I love the music and choreography. And what a lovely dress! The score was too low, imho, but the performance was there. Good for Mirai!

Yes, happy for Mirai, it was not the best score but I enjoyed her performance, I am not sure she can to correct her ur, it has been years in the same situation but the judges were very estrict with her and Ashley too, she must try harder.

I like her too, The program's ok as well,

But how is getting 4UR's being back on track?
That seems like a worst score than she's been getting for FS's in the past years,
it's practically the same score as her very off track 4CC showing.

There were good points and bad points to Mirai's skate at Japan Open.

The Good: She went for everything listed which is a major accomplishment for her. She really attacked the jumps and even though she didn't successfully land the harder ones, she tried and that does count for something. We know she is capable of landing a 2A-3T and getting full credit; judging by her 3F-3T, I'd say eventually she'll luck up and hit that as well; and I like that she attacked the 3S even though she missed it. That's a jump she hasn't done since about 2009 so to see her reinserting it into her line up is really encouraging. She's showing there's some fight left in her and I think, in the end, that will pay off.

The Bad: Lots of URs are never a good thing. What's worse is that Mirai looked genuinely surprised at her score which, to me, indicates that she was unaware that many of her jumps were landed short. If she can't see the problem then that makes fixing the problem more difficult. Also, I hate that she did what she did at nationals; stayed very blah throughout the performance until the very end. Right before the ChSq she completely perked up. She started smiling and giving more energy to her movements which is a great thing BUT that level of energy, commitment and performance needs to be on display at least for 70% of the program...not the last 5%. I understand that Mirai needs to focus for the jumps but she's never going to get competitive PCS if she only sells the last 30 seconds of the performance. When she's not jumping (which is the majority of the program) she needs to be selling the performance. For some reason that very important lesson hasn't sunk in over the years.:disapp:

Wow ! Good for her. It is really nice to see her skate well whether or she wins or loses. You could see her confidence grow as the program progressed. Her stamina has definitely improved and that will eventually allow her to focus on improving her connection with the music, judges, and audience.

Can someone explain the point difference between a rotated fall and a doubled jump ? Personally, I'd rather see a skater go for the jump, rotate it and fall over doubling it. However, doesn't a fall hurt them in tech and pcs due to the break in the program.

As a dance judge, I have been questioned by dance directors who say to me, " How did you have so and so beating us when 3 girls fell out of their triples ? " In dance, there are 3 judged elements adding up to 1000 points.

1. Vocabulary/ Content : Routine construction, designed elements, difficulty, transitions, formations, and musical interpretation. 400 possible points.

2. Performance effect / Showmanship : Did the dancers connect with the music, did they perform the choreographed changes of mood, did they have an emotional connection with the audience. 300 possible points.

3. Performance execution : Did the dancers perform as a unit ? Were there mistakes during turns, or traveling from to form to form. Timing of leaps, turns, and kicks. Spacing during transitions and halted highlight sections. 300 possible points.

Often, during the early part of the season, a group will not " Execute " as well as another due to the difficulty of their routine. However, since their " Vocabulary " is more difficult and the points available under vocabulary are higher, they may lose in execution, but still win the show.

I've heard many a Boo..... after scores are revealed to the audience. It's a fine line between attempting a triple turn where 95% of the group is successful in its execution and, a group that throws in a triple for the vocabulary points when only 50% of the dancers can complete it.

The second group will not only lose points in execution, they will also lose points in vocabulary for " Designed elements. " This means they have planned a skill which is beyond the dancers ability to complete successfully.

In skating, is it better point wise to fall on a rotated triple or quad than, to drop a rotation and stand up?

Yeah very excited for Mirai! tried everything, and great performance, good girl, give her all my support :yay: some changes in step sequence. I remembered there is a "reach out to audience and grab" move in her step sequence in broadmoor open, that move is very effective, but not here anymore...

Maybe it hasn't sunk in for her but, I'm sure it will be the first thing Tech Tom says to her. It will be very interesting to see where she goes from here. She has so many positive things to be proud of. Her program is great. Her costume and packaging are great ( Except hair )and you can see her desire to be a champion is returning.

I hope Tom tells her the truth even though it may be hard for her to hear." Don't be disappointed, this is not something you haven't heard before. Let's get back to the rink and fix it ":agree:

At the very least the URs aren't nearly as obvious and flagrant as they were at Salt Lake City. Also, she didn't UR anything in the second half (except the doomed salchow) so it doesn't appear to be stamina-related (which used to be her issue). I'm a little worried about that strange little leg wrap she's got going on though. Maybe she's trying to stay in the rotation position as long as possible?

^I know she's mentioned that Tom talks to her about jumping in was she's not heard before so perhaps they're reworking her technique a little. Her conditioning looks MUCH improved even from Salt Lake. Great speed near the end of the program. I also noticed it looked like they rechoreographed it some more since Salt Lake, which could explain the lost levels in spins etc...

Still I feel like the score of 106.86 doesn't represent how much stronger this skate was. I'm surprised the lutz was called the way it was. The take off edge was WAY better here than in Salt Lake, but I guess we this comp has a very strict caller. I found out you can watch videos on youtube in slow motion - down to .25 speed and the take off edge looked clean to me. But that could account for why she was a little short on rotation if she's really working that take off edge and getting used to the new momentum.

I would say yeah she's definitely on track here. Both her toes were close and to see her even attempt the salchow is AWESOME! She's got another three weeks to train hard before Skate America and we may not see the full fruits of her labor by then, but you can tell it's coming together.

The toes and the lutz were really close and at least one of the toes could have been given the benefit of the doubt. They just need to tweak a little more...get in about an eighth rotation more before touching the ice and she will get full credit. (Of course, that's easy for me to say since I'm not the one having to do it. lol)

What irritated me were the PCS. Almost 5 points below Ashley? Last season, or the year before I could see this, but I don't feel that reflects how they skated in this competition at all.

Really? Share please! :)

oh yeah it's not hard! if you click on the image of the gear or cog (whatever it is!) on the bottom right of the player that is the settings button, you'll see two categories come up - quality and speed. With quality you can make the videos play in HD if they have the capability and on speed you can slow down or speed up the video. You can slow it down up to .25 the speed or speed it up up to twice as fast. Of course you lose some image quality when it slows down but it's a great way to look at take off and landing edges.

For some reason I don't get any speed option when I click the gear. Just quality.

I can see why she scored under under PCS for Ashley. But I was impressed by Mirai, it looked better than her nationals FS to be honest. There was attack, fire and she was skating with speed. With the new line up she's at a 7 triple program! I think the move to Tom Z was a great idea. She seems to have renewed confidence in herself. She didn't self implode after her salchow.

She has all the qualities....beautiful landings like Shizuka, flexibility, ect. I genuinely wish she can make a comeback. With some polishing she could be the best. I must say though, even as someone who knows next to nothing about figure skating, her jumps look like they don't "make it" all the way (under rotation, I guess that's what the more technical viewers call it). It's rather obvious and needs some fixing. Otherwise, I loved her program and can't wait to see her progress.

I am so pleased that Mirai went for 3S in her program! There's work to be done but I hope this lights a fire in Mirai for the new season.

AWESOME!! Thank you! I had no idea I could do that!

3 URs, 1 downgrade, and an unclear edge on her Lutz, plus only a level 2 for the step sequence.

Uh, this is "back"? this is "exciting"? Because that just looks like the same old, same old.

Mirai will not be back on the right track until she starts rotating her jumps. Her jumps (at both the US Classic and Japan Open) were mostly & obviously cheated.

It's nice that she is trying to increase the technical difficulty of her programs. The problem is that she can't actually rotate the jumps that she is attempting. Her 3F-3T and 2A-3T are both so badly UR that she will be nailed by every technical caller in the world (the 3S attempt was awful, too.) She needs to alter her jump layout to one that is actually reflective of her ability.
