Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

Sincerely thought her lutz and flip were within the quarter of UR during the youtube slowmo version. Oh wells, but good for her to bounce back to a somewhat clean programme despite the URs. It's been a while since we Mirai bounce back from a bad showing. (Or to crumble under the pressure from a good one too.) Now to put 2 good programmes together.

Would the competition at Russia be higher? I suppose there is Anna and Adelina, and So youn is competiting there too right? (I dont see a medal just but the sound of this!)

I don't quite see her making the podium there but as long as she improves her URs and has a better performance I will be proud, medal or no medal

Mirai has to look as if she is PRESENT in the performance. The dead face and emotionless movements won't add up to higher PCS scores, and she still has those URs to deal with.

Park's lyrical R&J was quite a contrast to Mirai's flat Madama Butterfly. Park expressed a full range of emotion throughout not only in her face, but also in her hand and body movements; the fall on the loop took nothing away from Park's touching performance.

Angela Wang is also capable of turning in two good performances without a ton of URs.

When they posted Mirai's FS score I noted at once she got only 6 points higher than Brooklee Han. That in itself says quite a lot.

I believe she's run out of time. Even regaining her form of years past will not be enough. The field has surpassed that standard.

She's another in a line of American skaters with staggering potential that was unrealized... at least in terms of international placings.

It is a shame, because she is a lovely skater, and judging from comments of people who have met her... a very nice person.

I agree with this totally. While Yuna/Mao/Caro were a great trio, there was a huge drop off in depth below them. While the skaters at the very top aren't as great right now, there is a lot of depth as the Russian team will consist of three skaters able to top 200 (and probably a couple more who won't make the team that can surpass that mark). Polina and Gracie can achieve that mark if everything goes well.

I agree. She's going to go down as another Tiffany Chin. Insane ability and potential and then it just didn't happen for whatever reason/s. I can't believe she received 5 ur's in that program. I hoped TomZ would help, but it's same old same old. Plus once you get a reputation for UR's, you are practically permanent 'damaged goods'. Others will get the benefit of the doubt, but not for damaged goods. It's sad. I still root for her, but know it just won't happen.

Agree with all of you. What amazes me is that people keep hoping for her - just like they keep hoping for Jeremy and Alyssa. I think Skate America was her chance to prove that she still had it and instead we got the old Mirai.

Every time she competes people are like "this is her last chance to prove herself" so I think we are in for a few more years of last chances. I don't get why it is so difficult for people to just admit she is getting worse. Under rotating 5 jumps is not a step forward, except to Tom who wants to stay on Mirai's payroll.

It's actually sad for me to admit but, I don't really have anymore hope for Jeremy or Mirai. They are clearly talented but, especially with Jeremy saying "There's something missing from my trophy case." Jeremy needs to skate like a World Medalist every time he goes out and this is strike one. I feel the same way about Mirai. She's moved to Colorado, she has a new coach who is known for his ability to help skaters technically and still.......The same problem.

I wish her the best but my heart won't race like it used to when she's ready to skate. It's very sad to me.

I'm one of the delusional fans who is willing to give her this season to prove herself. She's still only 21 years old, which is not retirement age for most skaters. She's got a lot of stuff to work on and I frankly don't think she's been with Tom long enough to really make an impact on her UR issues. She does need to skate lights out the rest of the season and go for it like she did on Sunday.

Jeremy should've retired last year at age 29, and Alyssa is 27, so they are clearly at the point where their bodies can't take the training levels needed to excel in the competitive world of skating. Alyssa clearly realized this and retired from competition. She seems to be doing well on the professional circuit, such as it is.

Guys, just a pet peeve of mine: Czisny's first name is Alissa with an "I", not a "y".

I'm not really understanding why people shouldn't hope for a struggling skater. What's wrong with that? I think it's worse to stop cheering or supporting a skater when they're down and out. The thing about Jeremy and Mirai is that they're so human and have shown such potential that it's almost become a sort of sibling or friend association with them, where you've known them forever and are just waiting to see if they can finally put it together.

This "hoping" happens a lot in sports. It takes some tennis players all the way until they're nearly in their thirties to win a grand slam (and sometimes it doesn't happen), but it doesn't mean people should stop hoping for them to finally make it. Mirai (and Jeremy) clearly want to continue and it's not like we're losing anything (maybe some white hairs) by supporting them.

I say that all the time.....:agree:

Sorry, I have a good friend who spells her name with the "y" and it's just a habit.

Well as I've said since Nationals in January, I've given Mirai so many years to get it together.....I really guess I just don't care anymore. Yes she moved, yes she has a new coach, yada! yada! But it's the same old expressionless, "do I really want to be here" Mirai. I don't see joy in her skating or fight or the exhuberance that marked her skating in the early years. Age really has nothing to do with it. I think you either have it or you don't. As always I'd love for her to disprove my opinion but I'm not holding my breath.

There's nothing wrong with it. What I think is unfortunate is when a young woman can be doing great things with her life, going to school or starting a career, but instead is subjecting her body to punishment. She has had people around her telling her she is so close to greatness for 5 years now, and it's obvious (at least IMO) that she doesn't look hungry out there. That is what makes me sad. Then she goes out, skates poorly, and feels bad because she let people down but then they tell her "you are right on the brink of coming back." The coaches and choreographers continue to make money off of her and her family and I think deep down they know that the best in the world have left her behind for good. She should not have people telling her a program with 5 <'s was good; it's a lie. I probably haven't said this as nicely as I could have but it's the truth.

Just want to remind everyone that Ashley got 7 ur in Japan Open.

I would say that competing at the international level in a sport that she loves IS doing a great thing with her life.

Possibly - but does she really love the sport or does she (1) not have anything else; or (2) feel she's expected to keep on skating because of the potential many keep telling her she has! She sure doesn't look like she loves it when she's out there competing. The look on her face most of the time is like someone going to work every morning to a job they don't like.

Just want to remind everyone that Jason got -3 goe on two of his 3 ax attempts and only a +1 goe on the one good one he did at Skate America.

Well...yes he had 2 problematic axels, but he did enough other things right to earn a medal. In the context of Mirai - or Ashley - it might be relevant to say that he got a lot of under rotations in Nebelhorn, & only one at Skate America. Or that he tanked his jumps but kept on performing.

But with respect to Mirai: I sat in the arena & watched her. Her dress was gorgeous & she looked beautiful. People were thrilled that she was there & gave her a great welcome. Yet when she began to skate, she was just lifeless. Her face was dead. She didn't tell a story & she wasn't involved with the music. I couldn't judge the rotation on her jumps but I started tuning out because I was bored. Take a look at those Nick Verreos photos of her. Her face is blank & she looks depressed, or like she's sleepwalking. It's sad - I saw her live a few months ago in Stars on Ice & she was lovely, musical & one of my favorites in the show.

Mirai may be a great exhibition skater, but as a competitive skater, she is below par. Problem is, it's hard to get paying jobs in skating shows unless you're winning medals in competition. Or, like Taylor Firth and Becky Bereswill, you happen to resemble the lead characters in the runaway hit Frozen....
