Mirai Nagasu's future prospects

Will anyone be doing reports from Skate America ? I will be Judging a Band Review in Visalia, Ca. all day on Saturday. I do have Tivo so I'll eventually see it however, it calms my nerves to read about a bad skate beforehand so I'm prepared. It's not normal but there are some skaters, I just get so emotionally invested in.

I'm talking to you, Marai ! Don't give me a Heart Attack !!! You can do it !!!!!

When my gal Michelle Kwan was competing I couldn't bear to watch in real time. I hid around the corner from my TV and when I heard the crowd cheer or groan, then I could peek out to see what happened.

I was always that way with Kwan and with Davis/White. I just couldn't watch real time but just sweated it out until it was over and then cried or rejoiced when I saw the results.

I'm not that way with Mirai or Gracie, though. Both are bound to mess up at least once, and neither is a mesmerizing performer to begin with (especially Mirai). I do like to watch Gracie land most of her jumps, and both are great spinners.

I was always that way with Jeremy Abbot, Alyssa C. and definitely Mirai. But I have to admit I shut my eyes during Jason's Olympic LP. With Michelle I always expected her to skate clean. I had such confidence in her. But I know what you mean......

I was that way with Sasha during the 2006 Olys. A friend and I were on vacation in Europe, but that was a night in to watch the ladies. We sat on the edge of our beds waiting, and on that first fall, my eyes got watery and on the second stumble out, the tears came. It's amazing what skating fandom does to a person. You can spend a vacation night crying in your hotel room, lol!

Alissa............I needed a heart monitor to watch her live. I still can't watch Adam or Jeremy live. The older they get, the harder it is for me to watch them as I know how much is on the line for them when they skate.

Gracie and Jason are still young enough for me to deal with a bad skate once in a while. Fortunately, Jason rarely skates badly so I still get excited to watch him live. I'm really developing into a Max fan. I love his fight and he seems so unspoiled. He's one skater I can watch live because even if he has a bad skate, I feel like he can deal with it and move on.

I definitely don't feel that way when I watch Jeremy. I know his time as a competitor is coming to an end and he really doesn't have room to make any mistakes. He doesn't have a great rep with the judges which, unfortunately, he's earned. He needs to be great every time he goes out if he's to have any chance of winning that World medal he wants so badly.

PCS is as much a performance mark as it is a momentum mark. A skater can't have an occasional good performance and get great scores.

I was very close to becoming a I-can't-watch-her-skate-live fan for Mirai. As a matter of fact, I wasn't able to watch her FS from worlds in 2010. I wanted to but I was so nervous for her, I left the room. After that, I realized I needed to check myself. I was always that way with Michelle and I HATED it. I hated being an uber fan b/c it's draining to be so emotionally invested like that. Now I do not allow myself to get that attached to skaters. It helps that no one else has ever grabbed my heart the way Michelle did...*phew*.

Thankfully, I can watch everyone without covering my eyes or leaving the room. I still get nervous for some skaters but it's never to the point where I can't watch. I'll be nervous to watch Mirai skate but I'm just going to hope for the best for her.

From twitter.
"Also, what a run through for Mirai! 3F3T & 2A-3T... 7 triples. Girl is killin' it. #SA2014"

Even though we know the real performance won't be close to that
Would love to see practice video.

This is great to read. Even if she doesn't land 7 triples at Skate America I hope she lands 6. More than the jumps though, she needs to up her performance level and connect at the beginning of her Free Skate the way she connected at the end. I hate to dwell on this but, the Russian girls are all good jumpers and they have a fire { Like Mirai used to } when they skate. You can do it Girl.....
:agree:

This might be one of the truest and yet most understood statements I've read. I sometimes wonder if coaches speak to their skaters about it as I've seen a lot of shocked faces { Ashley Wagner } when a skater thinks they should have one.

Gee, If you guys aren't going to watch your skaters COMPETE (as in real time), well, that leaves me with a question, but I don't know how to word it.

Ask, Ask. Believe me, I heard them all from my students. I've been called a Wuss by my own Family so, it won't bother me. I've asked myself many times, why I can't watch a certain skater fail and why it doesn't bother me when a different skater does the exact same thing. I clearly need help !!!

Maybe I should see someone

I sure wish we could see practice videos too!

"The three-plus years to PyeongChang is an eternity for a skater, and Nagasu doesn't know if her body will let her hang on until 2018.

But she wants to try.

"I think I still have something in me. I think I still have something to prove — especially to myself," she said. "That's why I'm still here."

Nagasu can never get back what she lost. What she's found, though, is a strength that will carry her long after her skating days are over.
