Mone Chiba

Mhm, Hamada is my issue.
She progressed sooo much with Souji Tanaka, while Mie Hamada only managed to make her look frightened? I think that he's now coaching with Machiko Yamada in Nagoya? But it's true that she was scandalously underscored until she changed coaches, now she's scored reasonably. And she had to leave Ice Rink Sendai during the time when the rink wasn't operational and during the repairs.

Yuzuru Hanyu talking about Mone's and Shun's Olympic results in his very recent interview. This is a fellow A-class athlete speaking. Full of appreciation but no pretending things that matter did not matter.

He certainly guesses how she must feel. He himself has so often deserved, but not got, medals, and felt self-reproachful for the little errors he had made... It's a champion mindset and Mone Chiba has it too, I have long believed.

That’s one of the things I’ve always admired about Yuzuru. He is a dreamer, a perfectionist, an overachiever, but also a realist.

I must admit I never really paid attention to Mone’s skating before the Olympics, but my gosh, her skating was so beautiful. She was literally floating on ice! Of course, there is always room for improvement. I’m so excited to see what she does in the future!

Mone also gave an interview on March 11, the 15th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, like other skaters from Sendai, Yuzuru Hanyu and Shun Sato. She experienced the disaster at age 5 while attending kindergarten. She spoke about gratitude for the everyday life that was taken for granted, and her feelings toward her hometown of Tohoku.
Here's from Sponichi.

Thank you! I had never read any memories of the earthquake from her or Shun Sato, and had wondered if they would remember the events clearly, as many children don't have clear memories before 6.
Yuzuru Hanyu spoke of her in an interview yesterday, he said that he perceives her and Shun Sato, like children or younger siblings.

I hope that she can skate this Exhibition program many times next season! And I'm grateful to Carolina Kostner. Indeed there are several rinks around Milano, with active clubs, including the Bergamo rink where the Lombardia Trophy is held.

Congratulations to Mone Chiba for her fantastic Short Program, new Personal Best and second place into the Free Skating! (And for resuming with this dress so fitting to the part she's interpreting in the program!)
