Its very interesting how many skaters I have not heard of, they don't get coverage in America.

I can't believe I forgot John Curry whose style was so beautiful. What were his highest achievements? He was a star in the 70's and from England I believe.

Also, cause there is not any pro skating except the two tours, I have forgotten how much I liked Brasseur and Eisler, Martini and Underhill, and Josee, so beautiful, so graceful. I hated seeing those competition nerves however.

So many of my favorite skaters have already been mentioned by others in this post but I have to add Gary Beacom! He was definitely a unique skater. I remember seeing him in pro competitions where he would often improvise his routines without any jumps. And there was this one exhibition program where he and I think Gia Guddat were both skating with boots on their feet and hands!

Arrrggg!!! I can't believe I left one of my all-time favorites off of my list. Thank you so much for your post!

I try not to be too nationalistic as a skating fan. Usually I just want to see the best skater win, regardless of nationality.

For example, my all-time favorite pair (Gordeeva & Grinkov) and favorite ice dance team (Klimova & Ponomarenko) are both from Russia. Most of my favorite pairs are either Russian or Chinese (Mishkutenok/Dmitriev, Bechke/Petrov, Shen/Zhao). And in ice dance, I've liked teams of all nationalities.

My favorite male skaters are from a variety of countries as well (Kurt Browning, Todd Eldredge, Alexei Yagudin, Ilia Kulik).

When it comes to ladies, I do tend to be partial to the Americans, but mostly because I think they usually have the best overall package. Every now and then a non-U.S. lady comes along who combines both great technique and great artistry (such as Oksana Baiul, Yuka Sato, Lu Chen, and, now, Shizuka Arakawa). But in general, I find most of the non-U.S. ladies pretty lacking in artistry and presentation.

Now, this is *really* going out on a limb here (and I may be off base) . . . but I feel like the most nationalistic and jingoistic skating fans are actually Canadians, not Americans. Canadians seem to think their skaters should win regardless of how the competition skates. Witness the Salt Lake pairs scandal and all the brouhaha over Bourne & Kraatz's marks over the years.

I'm from Canada:

U.S.: Michelle Kwan, Scott Hamilton, Paul Wylie, Sasha Cohen, Angela Nikodinov

Switzerland: Lucinda Ruh, Lambiel

China: Lu Chen, Pang and Tong

France: Phillipe Candeloro, the Duchesneys, Anissina/Peizerat, Stanicke Jeanette

Japan: Yuka Sato, Shizuka Arakawa, Fumie Suguri, Takeshi Honda

Russia: Mishkutunik/Dimitriev, Kazakova/Dimitriev, B/S, Yagudin, Gordieva/Grinkov, Lobacheva/Averbuch, Abt, Ilia Kulik

Britain: Torvil and Dean, Steven Cousins

Lithuania: Drobiazko/Vanagas

Rakhama/Kokko - can't remember who they skated for

Germany: Katarina Witt

I know I'm going to forget a few, and misspell a few others...

Canada: Buttle and Sandhu, Jamie and David, and remember Underhill and Martini?, Oh! Cranston and Beacom.

Britain: Robin Cousins (my all-time favorite skater), Torvill & Dean

Russia: Yagudin, Plushenko, Sokalova, Elena & Anton, Lobacheva & Averbuch, Klimova and Ponomarenko, Bestemianova and Bukin (so over the top you couldn't help but enjoy it), Dmitriev and anyone he cared to skate with, Katya and Sergei, I could go on for days and days with the Russians.

Japan: Takeshi Honda, Shizuka, Fumie, Yoshie, Miki, - oh, heck, the whole darn team. :) Midori and Yuka.

China: Shen and Zhao, Pang and Tong, Song Gao

Switzerland: Lambiel! Denise Biellman (I found some old pro tapes last weekend - she was such an entertainer!)

France: Marina and Gwendel (their Carmina Burana was the best ice dance I've ever seen, IMHO), and a nod to Brian Joubert for my Spawn, Amazon Princess, who hasn't been able to check in lately but says hi.

Belgium: I was really impressed with Kevin van der Perren this season. Hope he does well in the future, I'd like to see more of him.

I just know I'm going to submit this post and remember a couple dozen others, because deep down, I love 'em all. Even Michael Weiss. ;)
