NBC Schedule for US Nats

Sorry if I missed something, but what about ESPN? I remember last year some events were shown on it, and I was wondering if anyone knew if anything would be on it again this year...

ESPN is affiliated with ABC, not NBC. They still have the contract with the ISU at least through this season and will be covering Worlds, but they no longer have a contract with the USFSA to cover US Nationals (or Skate America).

Is NBC planning on showing any skating on Sunday afternoon when the men's free skate was originally scheduled to air live?

There have been studies to suggest that Sunday is a popular family dinner night

if the family does go out to eat it's normally lunch...
At dinner time the family will eat after having their munchies in the afternoon while watching a ball game, a nascar race, a figure skating show. I think that is the family time. You'll have to show me some statistics that rating will go up at dinner time. Yes, the entire day is a family day but by 7pm they are not going to do any TV watching. They may well go out to dinner, or call out for pizza and watch 60 minutes - not figure skating except for people like us.

Nothing that I've seen listed so far, but with the way things are changing, I'd for sure check my local listings just in case they add something.

I think Adventure sports are scheduled early that afternoon. I don't know what will be put in the place of the original telecast, though.

I believe contractual agreements prevent them from showing any more than already scheduled (7 Hours). Could be wrong though.

I know Gymnastics gets prime time coverage in the summer but I don't remember the ratings (or the coverage!) being all that great. Still, exposure to the biggest audience of the week can't hurt.

I saw that ABC/ESPN will be broadcasting X-Games live that same weekend. Plus a basketball game Sunday evening - don't know what time.

Not only stiff competition on the ice in St. Paul but on the airwaves too. Not easy times for our beloved sport.

Just checking - do we know that this latest time table: Sat 4-6 and 8-11 (LIVE) and Sunday 7 - 9 pm is the final one? I want to be sure to set my VCR while I'm gone and don't want to wind up with bull riding or a poker tournament ( I know, those are usually ESPN, but . . . that doesn't prevent NBC from some equally odd programing, especially with the writers strike. )

It doesn't help that Hughes can no longer be promoted as part of the telecast. Her picture was featured in all but one ad IIRC.

MB - I would wait until NBCSports.com posts the final broadcast times. They still haven't announced anything so changes *could* still be pending. That may not be until the week of the competition. If you MUST set it sooner than go ahead and input those times. I assume the Sat. night telecast time won't change, but the afternoon times may still be shifted about.

Do you think the schedule for LIVE AT THE ARENA will change to suit NBC? That would cause a lot of problems at the box office for people wanting to leave St.Paul.

I believe you are talking about the taped Men's competition and when it will be shown. Correct?

Joe

Yes, I am talking about the two taped times - 4-6 (I think is the last one posted) on Sat. and the men's 7-9 taped on Sunday. I believe the 8-11 LIVE on Sat. is pretty safe.

I doubt that usfsa would change the skate time posted to suit NBC whim should they suggest changing the LIVE broadcast time. That would be the final straw for many ticket holder/fans who've been shuffled from pillar to post already as it is.

But I still think they've broken contract, albeit most likely OK'd by usfsa, by not having the amount of LIVE coverage they initially promised. Sure, they still have the 7 hours, IIRC the orginal live time agreed on, but only 3 of it is now LIVE.

Hope for the sake of the sport, it's competitors, and it's fans that this "confusion" is first year trial and error and they will do better in future. It's not that long before 2010 and Vancouver. They'd better get their act together quickly.

That said, some of it is good, but right now it's hard to separate it out from what isn't so good in gearing up to their first Nationals coverage.

"Thump" (that's me, jumping off my little soap box. :o)

For years, I finish the week with Ladies LP, go back to the hotel bar and order a Double Prognosis Negative, then go to sleep and wake up nexdt morning to grab a plane back home. (I'm not crazy for exhibitions.)

Feeling secure with the normal way Nats are held, I was shocked and dismayed to have to spend more money for the extra night to see Mens on Sunday, and rebooking flight. Not nice!.
I don't know the background for this. Maybe it was NBC's futzing around.

Joe

The actual competition schedule should not change. However, yes I am referring to the taped Men's and Pairs programs. I'm sure it has more to do with maximizing ratings than anything else, and I have a feeling the USFS is more than ok with that, since they also stand to benefit from the tv coverage due to the nature of the deal.

Live coverage in the 2-4pm window probably would have had to compete against some other program so they moved it to a less competitive 4-6pm window (speculation on my part). I'm less certain as to why the Men's program was moved but the Tribune article made it sound like it was due to the writer's strike and they needed filler time for those primetime hours. Then again, I think an NBA game is supposed to be on ABC Sunday afternoon.

one thing's for sure though, they really need to sort this out now so that next year and the following year there is no confusion. I understand this is the first time they've worked with a network other than ABC but they really need to be mindful of the fans attending the event as well.

I could NOT agree more!!

According to Phil Hersh, NBC is scheduled to announce their nationals skating coverage plans (including their lineup of commentators) later today (Wednesday). There will be a Pre-Game type show featuring Bob Costas, Dick Button, Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, plus Costas and Button will do a wrap up after each telecast. Details coming in their announcement.

Thanks.

I hope they post the schedule prominently somewhere.

NBC said a lot but really didn't produce. I think it's that they do not have the cable sports shows that ABC has.

Still, no word about who will show the 2009 LA Worlds as the Pre Worlds Olys on TV? NBC should grab this.

Joe

I'm not only concerned about which US network will cover the 2009 LA Worlds, but which one, and more seriously, if any will pick up the GP Series that season as well.

ABC/ESPN agreement with ISU expires after 2008 Worlds and so far no word even on who's in the mix negotiating to pick this up.

If ISU can come to agreement with cbc there's hope there will be one reached with a US carrier too. Probably won't know a thing 'til after this next Worlds.

Feb. 2: 4 p.m. - 6 p.m.: Skating Spectacular (taped on Jan. 27)
For those in attendance, did Caroline participate in the Skating Spectacular? As hard as it is to imagine that the NBC folks would overlook her, the precedence was set by the judges in the free skate ...

That whole outlook for 2009 does not look good. If it in the USA I believe the network may show Skate America as well as the Nats. If NBC is really trying to get more viewers to Vancouver in 2010, they should make all opportunities to fit in some less competitions like the GPs for viewing.

btw, Is anyone doing 2008 GPs other than Skate America?

Joe

I think "that network" may be trying to work out a deal with the ISU for online coverage, most likely for subscribers.
