I’ll be watching Europeans live in Sheffield
Me, too - I'm so excited about this!!

I live in Sheffield, and am setting off into town shortly to check out the city centre Fan Zone and also to see if I can spot any skaters/coaches!

[For those who are coming to Sheffield, the Fan Zone is located in the Peace Gardens, and includes an artificial rink and a big screen showing the competition live - open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekends and 2 to 8 pm weekdays.]

Be careful with the days of the week in this Peacock chart. They don't match the dates in many cases. I got confused when adding it to my calendar.

Probably on the ISU YouTube channel, because the BBC are only showing half of the competitions. 😞

Yes, I know that I am disappointed every season with the amount of coverage that the BBC provides of figure skating. But, I am especially disappointed with the amount of coverage they are giving us of the European Championships this year, considering that we are hosting the thing!

On the plus side, there is LIVE coverage of the Pairs FS, Ladies FS and both of the Ice Dance competitions. And for a change, they are showing the entire competitions, rather than joining after the first resurfacing like they normally do.

HOWEVER, there is no coverage at all of the Pairs SP, Ladies SP, or either of the Men’s competitions.

Why is the Men’s FS not being shown? Because the London Masters snooker tournament is also on this week. Or, rather, because the BBC have this weird obsession that whenever they show snooker tournaments, the Saturday afternoon sessions have to be shown on BBC1 rather than the channel that shows every other session of the tournament, BBC2.

This in turn means that the football magazine programme Final Score that normally gets shown on BBC1 on Saturday afternoons gets bumped down to Red Button 1. Which means that there is no room at the inn for the Men’s FS.

Except, there is room at the inn. BBC2 is showing a film from 1958 and a repeat of an episode of a documentary series from 2023. They could easily be shown some other time.

There is nothing to stop them keeping the snooker on BBC2, keeping the football on BBC1, and putting the Men’s FS on Red Button 1!

The weirdest bit of it all is that at 16:30, even if it is in the middle of a frame, the snooker switches over to BBC2 so that the last hour of Final Score can be shown on BBC1. Why not just have both of them on their regular channels to start with, and then there would be no need for both of them to switch channels at 16:30?!

Ach!

Sadly, it seems our National public broadcaster is going to show some of it (and they seem to be streaming most, except no chance to rewatch at all), which means the ISU youtube chanel will be blocked. Last time that happened I tried a VPN (very costly) and that just didn't work. I am too a-technical to fix such things. Very unhappy about this.

I suppose our national tv will broadcast everything live on the web channel yle areena, I checked and seems there are 4+ hours lasting programs so ☺️. Our commentators have also improved their styl, they do not chat all the time any more as they did previous years.

This morning (Thursday, New Zealand time) I unexpectedly saw that the women's SP was on. Was studying so only watched a few skates. Surprised Loena wasn't in the top 3, but guess she's still recovering from her injury.

Bringing this over from one of the competition threads.

Do you know who is commentating with Robin Cousins on the BBC this week? Kat Downes is in Australia for the tennis.

Just had a quick listen to the iPlayer. It's a woman commentator alone, but can't recognise who? Thank god Kat Downes is gone, gives me hope for Olympics as we'll have to rely on the BBC coverage.

For those of us that were wondering who was commentating for the BBC alongside Robin Cousins in Sheffield:

https://www.instagram.com/p/DTqdKwQCLwm/

Katie Smith, a football and general sports commentator who used to co-present the breakfast show on BBC Radio 5 Live.

I have't actually watched any of the BBC coverage, so I don't know if she was any good. But, when I get the chance, I do plan to find my various kids on the archived coverage and watch them to see what Robin and Katie thought of them compared to Chris and Tonia.
