New Plushy Interview

Plushenko has never been outside top 2 at Europeans and outside top 4 at Worlds even when he had meltdowns .

When was it that Plushcenko was off the podium at worlds...was it his first senior worlds? I just can't seem to remember it...was it 1998?

Just looked it up and it was 2000 in Nice. Was this the competition where he kept stalking the quad and threw his program out of th window to land the quad?

It may have been, but he did that in 1998 as well. I think there were 3 (failed) quad attempts in the FP in 98, and it was amazing that he still wound up third (I think).

I went back and looked up both 1998 worlds and 2000 worlds and neither of them were as bad as i thought but i think 1998 was the one i was remebering of the bad stalking of the quad but that was becuase he went for th efirst one and fell then changed his planned triple axel for another attempt at the quad - on which he fell again and he then went on to jumble the order of his jumps around anf i think missed a spin to fit in the extra jumps. He also fell on his second 3A attempt.

2000 wasn't so bad - he popped the first quad attempt to a double and when he came back round trying again he opened up and did just a triple. Neither of these programs were as bad as i had remembered them though. And his sit spin in 1998 went properly down!

Hard to believe it took him 8 years in Seniors to get his Oly gold.

As a result of Urmanov's withdrawal (being 1st after the SP) of 1997 seven worlds, Russia missed the chance of sending 3 skaters to the Olympics and could only send 2 - Kulik and Yagudin. 15 year old Pluschenko and Abt couldn't go to the Olympics. But the three (Yagudin, Pluschenko and Abt) swept the podium at the European Champioships the month before Olympics.

Not really too much. Olympics is only ever 4 years, so 8 years is only really 2 chances worth still. Although in his case his arrival was just before an Olympics, giving him potentialy 3, but nobody wins the Olympic Gold in their first year in Seniors, and Plushenko sure as heck would not have either even had he been able to go to Nagano as the 3rd Russian man. The second time he was a contender, but usually there is another, his name was Yagudin, and he just happened to have the better competition. Then his 2nd real opportunity he did in stellar fashion, so he was 1-for-2 in (realistic) opportunities.
