No Snow for Iditarod's Anchorage Start!

The train from Fairbanks delivered 300 cubic yards of snow so that we could at least have snow for a shortened 3 mile run through Anchorage (it's normally 11 miles). This is just an issue for the Ceremonial Start (think of it as a parade of dogs), but because that's when the sponsors/fans/iditariders come to town and throw money at the race it's a big deal when things change. There was no way they'd cancel, but there's no way to do like they've done in the past.

This has NEVER happened before. Hoping this is a one time thing otherwise it will majorly suck.

Me too. Saw the national news with the story and thought of you. It also sucks to be a polar bear right now in this decade, starving to death waiting for the sea ice to form later and later each year....
Lets hope for a colder winter next year!

Toni, love your banner on your blog; did you make it???

yup, the dog on the left is Pentecost (on Mitch Seavey's team again this year), the dog eyes are a dog named Raptor (also one of Mitch Seavey's dogs, but he is not racing on his team this year). The team is Cim Smyth the year he won the Tustumena 200.

This is so sad. I wish we lived in a society that held people accountable for their actions. I wont tell you what I would do if I was sledding and someone tried to ram me, but this guy needs serious jail time and he needs any wages and assets he has tithed till there is sensible monitary rewards for the damage he caused. Dont blame the alchohol, blame the person. Throw the book at him and all drunk drivers.

he's the village drunk. apparently since he said he's sorry the village wants it to be forgiven and forgotten (it's the mentality most everywhere in Alaska... it's frustrating). But he was just in court today and faces 12 charges.

HE says he doesn't remember anything, but then goes on to say that he was NOT attacking either team - he was checking to see if they were okay. Now, I could MAYBE understand if he ran into them ONCE, but HE RAN INTO ALIY ZIRKLE THREE TIMES until she finally beat him with a stick to get him to go away (the mushers can carry firearms but he was going upwards of 100mph, in the dark there's no way she'd have shot him). Jeff King was assaulted FROM BEHIND. The dog killed was hit at 100mph and died nearly instantly.

Oh, and Jeff King - the one who's dog died - is supposedly this guy's favorite musher. I'm not sure, but I believe he belongs to a prominent mushing family from "back when". I think this dirtbag got wasted and thought it'd be fun to harass and scare and attack the mushers... you'll note that he went after the FEMALE musher several times. I hate to think what the motive was. Aliy (the female victim) is still shaken a day and a half later. Her race didn't stall but she won't contend for first. Jeff King was in the top group going for first and now he's lost a lot of momentum and is not even trying to be competitive now, he's just trying to stay away from the cameras. HE IS DEVASTATED. I've been a fan of his for a long time (long as I can remember), he doesn't get overly emotional, but man he loves his dogs. In several videos yesterday he choked up as he talked about Nash (the one who died), Crosby (broken right leg) and Banjo (severely bruised, but okay).

To say I'm pissed is an understatement. Thankfully the judge overseeing today's court proceedings has NO sympathy for the piece of crap, so HOPEFULLY they do NOT go lenient on him.

on a happier note: Dallas Seavey and Mitch Seavey are running the last 77 miles and are 1st and 2nd. Close enough together that either one is most likely the winner (but 77 miles a lot can happen).
