I'm posting some vids of performances that were...wonderful, by non-Olympic gold medalists...(who aren't of the current flavour)

I'll start with ladies. Feel free to add others I've forgotten...

Janet Lynn (I can't seem to find the full version)

Those tapes just prove that beautiful skating doesn't always get a gold medal, but in your hearts, you know who was the better skater.

Denise Beillman skate was unbelievable. You hear so much about her being famous for her spin but I did not realize what a talented skater she was. She was in 8th place going into the LP otherwise I think she would have won gold. Did the figures do her in?

Yep. She was 12th in figures, 2nd in the SP and 1st in the LP. Under the 92-2002 system, she would've been gold medalist.

Her LP in 1980 would've (if skated the same way) won the LP in 84 and 88!

Yes, that is true! One has very much enjoyed the freeskate performances by many skaters that maybe did not do as well in other part(s) of the competition. But "unfortunately" a competiton does not consist just of the freeskate. For a gold medal a skater needs a good combined result in every part of the competition or "help" from other skaters. The champions are those that manage to do it.

Being in posession of a high-speed connection at last, I finally was able to watch some videos--I'm surprised by how much more impressed I am by Janet Lynn as a pro than as eligible. The contrast in artistic ability and line is just striking--maturity does matter (watch the 1983 World Pros and just look at her shoulders, arms and hands. I'm gonna steal those hands. And I'd say even her jumps are better.)
