Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the scoring rules from those times. I've read brief summaries but not detailed explanations.My impression is that the rules were quite complicated back then and changed from year to year. Tim Woods' analysis that he lost the OGM because one of the judges was confused about whether the "factoring" rule was 10 (like at Worlds) or 12 (whether carried over from previous Olympics or rushed into place for the current one) us quite intriguing to me.
Maybe our resident historian-encyclopedist gkelly (or gkelly's grandmother) can help us understand all the ins and outs.

Midori Ito should've won in 1988 even with the school figures being factored, same for Brian Orser in 1984. It wasn't the school figures that actually created a problem those years, it was the reputation judging.

Ice Dance Ilinyk/Katsalpov worlds 2014. They won the LP but Katsalapov made a huge error in his twizzle in the SP burying them to 5th. They ended up 4th overall.
It was during the Short Program that Ilinyk allegedly found out that Katsalapov was ending their partnership and already teamed up with Sinitsina because she heard other skaters were gossiping about the Katsalapov/Sinitsina team up.

I've always thought her 1988 Olympic performances were the best of her career. She had such a lightness of spirit and her skating showed such freedom and joy. For all of her later successes, I thought she never reached that level again, and it was probably due to the increased pressures she must have felt. And sure, a purist might criticize her positions and need of more refinement - but those programs were magnificent overall.
